Into the book
What must come before improving the formal dimension of language is examining the state of an individual's self-concept and finding the root of the communication style problems that arise as a result.
Only then can we make an effort to transform the negative aspects of our self-concept into positive ones, thereby breaking free from the vicious cycle and entering a virtuous one.

--- p.26

Even if systematic guidance is provided for communication anxiety, if the classroom atmosphere itself is rigid and mistakes are not tolerated, it is difficult to expect improvement in students' communication anxiety symptoms.
Even in everyday classroom communication situations, teachers need to create a comfortable atmosphere where students feel less burdened by communication.
Teachers and students must create a positive atmosphere for the success of the student presenting.
When students feel like their audience is supportive rather than critical, their anxiety about presenting decreases.

--- p.38

When leading empathetic conversations, it is effective to establish a two-way communication structure.
The speaker expresses his or her feelings in the current situation in the order of 'observation, feeling, desire, and request' according to the method of nonviolent communication.
The listener listens attentively and encourages the other person while they are speaking, following the empathetic listening method. After the other person has finished speaking, the listener understands the other person's feelings and responds appropriately by summarizing and reflecting.
Next, the listener becomes the speaker and expresses his or her feelings through the same process, and the speaker becomes the listener and understands and responds to the feelings.

--- p.66

The principle of cooperation is suitable for explaining the effective transmission of information, including the quantity and quality of information, relevance, and attitude.
It also serves as a useful criterion for interpreting conversational implicature phenomena that occur under the assumption that conversational participants cooperate.
However, it is not enough to explain all conversational phenomena using the principle of cooperation.
This is because, in addition to the effective transmission of information, the principle of considering interpersonal relationships is also valued among people.
(…) In terms of having to create something together rather than alone, ‘cooperation’ is important, and in terms of having to consider interpersonal relationships with others, ‘courtesy’ is important.
Although these two principles may have some individual or cultural differences in practical application, they are clearly universal principles that explain human conversation phenomena.

--- p.90

In speaking skills education, it is more important to recognize the impact of nonverbal communication on the formation and development of interpersonal relationships than to introduce the types of nonverbal communication.
When teaching nonverbal communication, it is good to introduce the types of nonverbal communication with various pictures or to create interesting learning activities related to nonverbal communication in scenes from dramas or movies. However, it is also important to encourage self-evaluation to improve the negative aspects of one's communication style.
Rather than an analytical approach to the nonverbal communication styles of others as seen in texts or dramas, it is desirable to develop learning activities that foster higher-order cognition, which allows one to examine and adjust one's own nonverbal communication behavior.

Publisher's Review
In today's world, where communication is more important than ever, this book introduces methods for communicating effectively and providing comfort to one another, focusing on "empathy."
The concepts related to communication covered in this book extend from the inner self of the individual to human society, including self-assessment for communication, self-disclosure and empathy for interpersonal relationships, nonverbal communication that facilitates conversation, and the language community that is the premise of communication.
It also specifically covers various forms of communication, such as speeches, arguments, debates, discussions, negotiations, interviews, and presentations.
It will help to enrich the understanding of basic concepts related to communication and to build a solid theoretical background, but it will also be of particular help to teachers and prospective teachers who teach speaking skills to students in elementary, middle, and high schools.
This book consists of 12 parts and 24 chapters.
Each chapter begins with a helpful introduction explaining why the topic is being covered and how the content of this chapter connects to the previous one.
The text provides a detailed explanation of the main concepts and theoretical background covered in each chapter, and includes various case studies.
In particular, through the 'Speech Teacher's Notes', it explains what teachers should keep in mind and what would be good to refer to when teaching speaking.
Finally, ‘Direction of Speaking Education’ summarizes the key concepts learned in each chapter and explains what to keep in mind when teaching speaking.
