The 'Sinclair' of 1919 is back!
Demian is a novel published by Hermann Hesse in 1919 under the pseudonym 'Emil Sinclair'.
Hermann Hesse, who was recognized as a great writer in the literary world at the time, wanted to see if his novels would be recognized solely for their artistic value, and the result was successful.
Afterwards, many people became curious about the unknown writer 'Emil Sinclair', and Hermann Hesse revealed that he was 'Emil Sinclair'.
The first edition of 『Demian』 published by The Story adopted the cover design of the first edition published by Hermann Hesse under the name of 'Emil Sinclair' in 1919.
『Demian』 was published with the author's name changed to Hermann Hesse starting in 1920 after Hermann Hesse revealed his true identity.
Hermann Hesse's 『Demian』 is a pioneering work that meticulously presents the relationship between 'war' and 'individual' in modern German literature after World War I and II.
In Germany, where individualistic and philosophical thinking is customary, it is impossible to speak honestly about the reality of war without closely exploring the inner self of the individual.
"Demian" was like a second starting point for Hermann Hesse, who was determined to start over after the end of World War I. It meticulously depicts the soul that pursues self-discovery as its life goal, pursues its inner path, and confronts reality.
Through Demian, a story of intense growth, Hesse hoped that countless 'Emil Sinclairs' around the world would go through self-exploration and realize the fundamental power of life.
And only then was I sure I would hear the voice of destiny calling from within.

Into the book
Many people would not believe that a child under eleven years old could have such thoughts.
I'm not trying to make people understand my situation.
I just want to talk to someone who knows human nature better.
Adults who have learned to transform their emotions into reason not only fail to imagine that this kind of reason exists in children, but also ignore their experiences.
But I have rarely in my life experienced such desperate and distressing experiences as I did then.
--- From "Cain"
Just then I noticed Damien crouching on the stool, looking strange, near the curtained window.
A feeling flashed through me like lightning that I had seen something like this before.
He sat with his arms down and his hands on his knees, motionless.
His face, slightly bent forward with his eyes wide open, looked numb, and a small, shining reflection of light glittered lifelessly in his eyes, like a piece of glass.
The pale face was deeply immersed in itself, and no other expression could be found except a state of shivering numbness.
It felt like the mask of some ancient beast in the temple's vestibule.
He seemed barely breathing.
