The path to finding the true self by exploring the origins of the world
An autobiographical novel reflecting the spirit of the great German author Hermann Hesse

If you were to choose the most well-known 20th-century German writer to Korean readers, it would undoubtedly be Hermann Hesse.
Hermann Hesse, a writer of inner exploration and a representative example of self-reflection, pursued humanism and included in his works the suffering of youth, longing for nature, and the duality of human nature.
To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Hermann Hesse's birth, The Story Publishing Company has produced a luxurious fabric hardcover edition of Hermann Hesse's masterpiece, "Siddhartha."
In addition to the luxurious color and feel unique to the fabric, the collection value has been further enhanced by reproducing the cover design of the first edition published by German publisher Fischer in 1919.
Additionally, the book's durability has been enhanced through the traditional four-season binding with thread, making it easy to open and read, and the chocolate-covered cover, one of Germany's representative cover production methods, has been reproduced to capture the quality and value of the original first edition.
And the in-depth translation by the translator, a German literature scholar, will fully convey the emotion of Hermann Hesse's autobiographical and philosophical literature.

The story of an ascetic who constantly practices to perfect his inner self.

"Siddhartha" is the story of the life of a young ascetic named Siddhartha, and is an idealization of Hesse's own life.
In this work, Hesse parallels his own life with Siddhartha's journey to liberation.
Hesse's enlightenment can be clearly seen through the character and experiences of the protagonist Siddhartha.
In short, this work can be seen as a mixture of the author's life and the cultural influences he experienced.
Thanks to his father's Christian background and his mother's South Indian linguistic background, Hermann Hesse was able to acquire a deep knowledge of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Christianity, and Siddhartha can be said to be the fruit of this influence.

Hermann Hesse's autobiographical worldview and philosophical questions about life

The novel lacks a strong plot to shift the action, and offers little suspense or excitement.
Most of his works are autobiographical and deal with philosophical questions about worldview and life.
Siddhartha can be said to be Hesse's attempt to find peace with the world.
In other words, it is a very important stage in Hesse's development as a writer and a human being.
It can be seen as a unique work in German literature, especially because it presents Eastern philosophy.

Like Siddhartha, Hesse rebelled against his parents and the strict school system that destroyed their devout Christian tradition and their attempts at individual independence, and he never received a quiet and happy peace from them.
He wanted harmony with the world and peace with himself, but the religious and educational foundations of his life could not explain his situation in the world and in himself.
That is why Hesse had no choice but to review it once more before writing Part 2.

Just as Siddhartha sought to liberate himself from his own pleasures, Hesse sought to break free from religious ideology in order to build a new foundation for explaining his experiences and the world.
Siddhartha discovers his place in the world through conversation and thought with the river.
Hesse, too, had to reflect deeply on his religion and his past in order to find harmony with the world.
Siddhartha found harmony through the river and through understanding that all things are reincarnated and that all things are part of everything else.
Hesse found harmony through a reconstruction of his faith that better explained the world and his experiences to him.
