Description
Book Introduction
What if my ordinary daily life is destroying the climate?
“We are at the forefront of the climate crisis that is causing all these tragedies.
Just because I live each day 'normally'.
So who can possibly not make excuses?”

Nowadays, the term global boiling is more familiar than global warming.
Beyond a warming Earth, it is now a boiling Earth.
The Earth is showing increasingly abnormal climate.
In the face of this dire climate crisis, we don't deliberately destroy the planet further by dumping waste batteries in forests or emitting carbon by flying around on unnecessary planes.
I donate to environmental causes and don't vote for parties that ignore climate change.
Companies are taking the lead in environmental movements by receiving eco-friendly certification.
No one wants to actively destroy the environment, fuel the climate crisis, and threaten their very existence.
We are all good, ordinary people who are in favor of protecting the climate.
So who on earth is destroying this planet?

In fact, if you look at many of the decisions we make in our daily lives, they are not very climate-friendly.
We engage in countless actions that leave a huge carbon footprint and contribute to the climate crisis, such as flying, driving, and eating meat, and we come up with countless excuses to justify and rationalize them.
"Climate crisis? I think it's already too late." "No matter how eco-friendly I live, others will ruin everything." "I'll just drive this once, but from now on, I'll walk short distances for the sake of the climate."... ...

Did you know that these familiar phrases, many of which we've uttered and heard at least once, are actually excuses for our climate-destroying actions? The newly published book, "I Am a Benevolent Climate Destroyer," introduces 25 such excuses we often make in our everyday lives.
It delves into the various aspects of our society that believe we must protect the Earth, yet end up engaging in climate-destroying behavior, and the human psychology hidden within them.
Vivid, concrete examples (excuses) and sharp analysis evoke empathy for common excuses, while helping us understand the psychology behind them and the actions that lead us to make these excuses and engage in climate-destructive behavior.
The book made its mark on readers by winning the K3 Eunice Foote Award, awarded to projects that motivate climate protection through climate-friendly communication in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Into the book
This is because easy, satisfying actions like saving electricity, separating trash, and using cloth bags can help justify the occasional flight.
Anyway, since I'm doing some eco-friendly things, I think it's okay to take a plane for vacation once a year.
So we happily ignore the fact that a single long-haul flight emits more carbon than we save in a lifetime by saving electricity, separating our trash, and using cloth bags.
Psychologically, even one good deed can lead to this kind of neglect.

Of course, it is not only politicians who cause enormous damage with good intentions.
Even we ordinary people sometimes commit such acts.
Maybe you're also concerned about the climate and want to buy local produce without packaging whenever possible.
Don't radio, YouTube, and even your friends always tell you that buying local is the sustainable way to go?
But where can you buy local produce? It certainly isn't the corner discount store.
If so, direct transaction with farmers is the answer.
For example, the farm recommended by a coworker is in a neighboring town about 30 kilometers away.
It's too far to ride a bike, so I drive 60 kilometers round trip to buy a row of eggs, some ham wrapped in aluminum foil, and a loaf of bread.
And finally, I buy the rest of the necessities at the local discount store.
Ultimately, even if it was a well-intentioned act, it still emitted more carbon than if you had just bought everything at your local discount store (or bought local produce at your local organic store).

"It was an act done with good intentions"

I, Thomas, am an ordinary person and I have no responsibility.
I even ride my bike to the vertical farm in the neighboring village to buy organic pumpkins grown there and eat raw vegan food in my minimally heated home, so I'm already very climate-friendly.
But no matter how hard I try, it's no use.
No matter how much carbon is reduced, that amount is equivalent to the amount emitted in seconds by people like Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk through their space exploration projects.
I can drive to the discount store and buy a steak too.
What does it matter to me whether the climate is ruined or not?
And as for the political system, as Michael Mann said, it has completely failed.
In this regard, we ordinary people are actually not at fault at all.
We did not vote for a party that ignores climate change, and that was enough.
I don't think there's any need to feel solidarity responsibility for the climate crisis!

Climate Psychology Expert Speaks Out!
A book that penetrates the contradictions within and without us.

Author Thomas Brudermann has conducted research in various fields, including climate psychology, sustainable development, and public psychology, at several international institutions, including the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan, and AIT in Thailand.
He is also an active environmental activist and human behavior expert, and based on his diverse research experience, he published “I am a Good Climate Destroyer.”
This book sharply examines the contradictions within and outside of us humans that make it difficult to take climate-friendly action, such as conducting climate-related research while simultaneously mocking ourselves for driving and emitting greenhouse gases, and sharply criticizing politicians' ridiculous environmental pledges.

In fact, there is a reason, an excuse, for all our actions that destroy the climate, such as driving cars and flying, leaving behind a huge carbon footprint.
This book analyzes the various excuses we make to avoid, ignore, and fear the climate crisis.
The story unfolds in detail, from the rational decision to choose a plane over a train because it saves time or is cheaper, to the phenomenon of people distancing themselves from climate change and its consequences, believing they do not directly affect their lives, and shifting the blame to others.
Through a variety of psychological mechanisms, including defense mechanisms and cognitive biases, readers will learn how we perceive ourselves as "good people" and maintain this positive self-image even as we engage in climate-destroying behavior.
The truth behind the excuses that helped us easily justify and rationalize is revealed, pricking the readers' conscience.

At the end of each chapter in this book, there is a boxed text that summarizes the chapter or provides background information.
Let's review the key points explained above again to learn new information and understand the text more easily.
Additionally, the capybara illustrations placed throughout the book, which briefly summarize the main situations in the text, enliven the book's atmosphere and add to the enjoyment of reading.

Beyond individual practice, to structural change!
A guide to a climate-friendly future and a climate-friendly daily life!

This book is for readers who, despite all these excuses, want to take action for the planet.
Rather than analyzing our countless excuses, revealing their psychology, and rationalizing them by saying, "It just happened," we help readers find the single reason to make climate-friendly choices.
By adding counterarguments to all these excuses, the book provides readers with a direction to take climate-friendly action despite all the reasons presented in the book.

The ways to lead a climate-friendly life introduced in the book are not limited to individual practice.
It sharply criticizes the weaknesses of climate policies that exclude market economic principles and fairness, such as carbon taxes, and emphasizes that political decision-makers must consider social issues more thoughtfully based on fairness. It also introduces ways in which climate-friendly daily life can become widespread through social norms.
