Book Introduction
No Longer Human: The Pinnacle of 20th-Century Japanese Decadence
The first edition of "No Longer Human," the autobiographical novel by Tazamu Osai, Haruki Murakami's favorite author, has been published.

Osamu Dazai's masterpiece, "No Longer Human," is a work that blossomed in an era of widespread social anxiety.
Known as the author's autobiographical novel, this work borrows the format of Osamu Dazai's memoirs and tells the story as if confessing the author's own life.
Consisting of a preface and an afterword narrated by the narrator, "I," and three memoirs written by the protagonist, Yozoh, the work poignantly portrays the decadent emotions and anxiety of a young man who hides all connections with humanity and society with laughter.
Yozoh, who could not understand 'humans' but called himself a 'joker' in order to blend in with that world, eventually becomes a 'disqualified human'.
A masterpiece that allows readers to experience the hypocrisy and cruelty of the human world through the eyes of a marginalized person! "Yojo" explores the inner conflicts that everyone has likely experienced at least once, and challenges readers to question what it means to be truly human in a world of distrust. Discover this masterpiece through the cover design of the first edition of The Story.

Into the book
I'm lonely.
I think I would sympathize with that one muttering more than with a thousand laments from women, but I find it strange and inexplicable that I have never once heard those words come out of the mouths of any woman in this world.
But she never said with her mouth that she was lonely, but instead, she was exuding a terrible loneliness like a thin air current that spread out from the outside of her body.
So when I approached that person, my body was also engulfed in that current, and it blended well with the current of my own sharp, prickly gloom.
I was able to escape from the fear and anxiety of being like a 'dried leaf stuck to a rock at the bottom of the water'.

I thought it was a tuberculosis sanatorium.
I received a very gentle and polite examination from a young doctor.

“Well, you should recuperate here for a while.”
The doctor smiled shyly and said that, and Halibut, Horiki, and Yoshiko decided to leave me behind.
Yoshiko handed me a bundle containing a change of clothes, then wordlessly took out a syringe and the remaining medicine from her belt.
I guess that's what I thought it was, an aphrodisiac.
“No, I don’t need it anymore.”
It was a very rare occurrence.
That was the only time in my life that I had ever refused someone's advice.
My misfortune was the misfortune of one who could not refuse.
I was terrified that if I refused to do what was recommended, a huge, unfillable chasm would be created in both the other person's heart and my own.
But then, I became a madman and very naturally refused the morphine I so desperately wanted.
Was he impressed by Yoshiko's, so to speak, 'godlike ignorance'?
I may have already broken free from my addiction at that moment.
But then I was immediately led into a ward by the shy, smiling young doctor, and the door was locked with a clank.
It was a mental hospital.

The protagonist, Yozoh, was born into a wealthy family and appears to be popular and cheerful.
But inside, he lives with hidden distrust and fear of humanity.
That is why, even more than that, I exist as a simple human being who gives others the smile they want.
Yet, it is far from happiness or satisfaction.
He hides his true self behind the mask of 'clowning' and is unable to form genuine relationships with anyone.
So his human relationships are empty and meaningless.
Eventually, Yojo's life is ruined by several suicide attempts, alcohol, women, and drugs, and he meets a tragic end.

Yojo, who had to act like a clown in front of everyone because of his fear of human nature.
And the humans who were the objects of fear surrounding him.
The way he dealt with them was like a self-portrait of a fallen human being.
Let's reflect on what the true nature of humanity is as seen by the protagonist or as seen by oneself.
