Book Introduction
Winner of the 17th Golden Toad Award for Long Fairy Tale in 2011
The moment I hold a red pencil, I become the most special child in the world.
Minho's special and secret growth diary, where he meets a magic pencil that allows him to write anything as if it were real.

This is a full-length fairy tale by Shin Su-hyeon, winner of the 17th Biryongso Golden Toad Award in 2011.
This fairy tale, which is also the author's debut work, contains the story of Minho, who comes into possession of a 'red pencil' that allows him to write anything fantastically and fluently, and grows up while struggling between secrets and lies.

The work has been praised as “a fascinating and successful exploration of a theme rare in our fairy tales: the confrontation with irresistible temptation.”
It was selected as this year's winner by winning the trust of the judges for its detailed portrayal of the psychology of "children as subjects who make their own decisions without the help of any assistants."

This fairy tale offers insight into true writing while also depicting the growth of overcoming desire and taking a step forward.
The red pencil represents Minho's desires and needs, and has a duality that brings both happiness and pain.
The writing that Pencil writes on Minho's behalf makes him a popular and capable child, but the more Pencil tries to make Minho's reality look plausible, the more Minho's worries and pain fester inside.
The author shows the image of a strong growth through Minho, who faces the red pencil alone without being able to tell anyone.
As the situation becomes increasingly complicated due to the pencil, Minho's struggle to decide what to do with it makes the book a book that engages the reader in finding a solution.

Publisher's Review
Real diary, fake diary.
I have two diaries.

“They say a diary is about looking back on the day and honestly writing about meaningful things,
Actually, you can't write it like that.
Because other people read it.”

Minho's parents separated, and his father left home, so he lives alone with his mother.
Not only do I not get to see my father often, but my mother, who lives with me, also doesn't get to spend much time with Minho because she works.
Minho, who has not heard an explanation from anyone as to why his parents are living apart, is harboring pain inside.
Three years ago, on the day his parents had an argument, Minho wrote about it honestly in his diary.
However, the teacher who saw the diary called Minho's mother to school, and his mother criticized Minho for writing such things in the diary.
After that, Minho starts making a separate diary for school and a secret diary where he can honestly confess his inner thoughts.

Thanks to the red pencil, Minho not only receives praise for his writing, but also has more things to write in his secret diary.
Although he has a “real secret that can’t even be written in a secret diary,” Minho begins to enjoy the joy of writing sincerely without realizing it as he writes down his worries and thoughts that come with a red pencil.

“Oddly enough, the more I wrote in my diary, the more I had to write about.
So I started using it more often and gradually increased the amount I used.
It was a new pleasure.
Some days I couldn't sleep unless I wrote in my diary.
“I guess I’m addicted to weather forecasting.”

As children begin to develop a sense of self, showing their diary entries to others can be a sensitive topic for them.
The author captures this point and goes further to subtly suggest an attitude for writing good articles.
Song Ji-ah, who appears as a children's story writer in the book, discovers honesty and courage in Min-ho's writing when he writes on his own without a red pencil.
This speaks to the fundamental attitude of writing that adults may overlook when teaching children writing skills: that they must honestly express their 'sincerity'.

When you can't express it in words, just open your heart first.

“The shepherd boy was so lonely.
I wanted to see people, not sheep.

“What a liar needs is someone to believe in him again.”

In an essay about 'Our House', the red pencil decorates Minho's house as a harmonious family, and because of that, the lies grow out of control.
As Dong-cheol and Jae-gyu, who are in the same class, continue to be suspicious and jealous, Min-ho decides to throw away the red pencil, but ends up shouting, "Just once."
However, thanks to the red pencil, Minho becomes close to Sua, whom he likes, and also starts to communicate with his mother little by little.
I feel lonely and afraid because I can't reveal the truth in front of people who believe in me and encourage me, but because of them, I feel like I should become a more confident and courageous person.
Also, through Jeongran, who draws beautiful pictures in Minho's writing, Minho learns the charm of honesty.
Jeongran is not good at studying and always says strange things, so she is often ignored by her friends. However, she uses her imagination to draw wonderful pictures every time.
Through Jeongran, Minho learns to be honest with himself without worrying about what others think.

Minho missed his father very much, but he always couldn't understand him.
But Minho, who is now trapped in a fence of secrets and lies, decides that rather than just waiting for his father, he must first enter his father's fence.
By overcoming the temptation of the red pencil, Minho learns to open his heart and speak his mind.
