Book Introduction
Poet Na Tae-joo's poetry with story and illustrations by webtoon artist Dahong
A collection of comforting comic poems for you to shine brighter tomorrow!

The poetry of Na Tae-ju, the poet of wildflowers who is called the warmest poet of our time, and the emotionally rich creative story and illustrations of Dahong, the writer who gained attention with the Naver webtoon [Wall in the Forest], have been combined to publish the first comic poetry collection in Korea, “I Wanted to See You for a Long Time.”
Poet Na Tae-joo's poem, which seems to contain the scent of warm apple tea as soft and cozy as cotton, has been reborn as a touching story through the illustrations of webtoon artist Dahong, who is full of lively emotions and cozy like fluffy clouds.

Poet Na Tae-ju recalls that the comics he read as a child were not only fun but also brought him comfort and dreams.
As an adult, becoming a poet and meeting young readers, the wish to publish your poems as a comic book was a 'romance' and a 'bucket list'... Author Dahong says that while looking at a poem by poet Na Tae-ju for a long time, the poetic feeling he gets and the warm story in the comic book poetry collection became a small comfort in his weary daily life.

The heartwarming story of the poet grandfather and his adorable granddaughter Ayoung in the comic poetry collection “I’ve Missed You for a Long Time” will be enough to comfort you as you shine brighter tomorrow.

Into the book
long time
I missed you

long time
We couldn't meet

How are you?
I was just grateful for that.
---From "Greetings"

When a person walks down the street
Sometimes you miss the bus

Without doing anything wrong
Like missing the bus
There are times when things get tough

Every time that happens, kid
Don't forget

The bus will come next time too
The next bus that comes is sometimes
It could be better!

In any case, child
Love yourself
The most precious thing in this world
Don't forget that you are yourself.
---From "Back to Middle School"

You are so pretty
Keep smiling for a long time

First of all, for you
Next is for me
For the world

A world as beautiful as you
The world you are smiling at
What a wonderful world it would be!
---From "Love"

People right now without you
Life is hard, I'm tired, it's hard,
He even says he's angry

But even in this part
The words we should lean on
The desire to ask is 'nevertheless'

Nevertheless, we
I have to eat
I have to sleep and work

Nevertheless, we
You have to love without holding back
You have to learn to be a little more patient.

Above all, the string of hope
Must not miss
Don't let go of the crow's feet of waiting

That's why every morning comes
Because there are four seasons, spring and fall
That's why the children are with us.
---From "Nevertheless"

Living in your heart
How about me?

Come into my heart
You who are still living
It's pretty and cute.

Publisher's Review
The warmest poems of our time by poet Na Tae-ju
The emotions contained in Dahong's paintings
The beauty of each moment of life, the preciousness of everything close to us!

The story of Na Tae-ju's Dahong cartoon poetry collection begins with the poet's memories of his granddaughter, Ayoung, whom he cherishes dearly.
I must have been three or four years old.
Ayoung, whose face is worn out from spending a long time in the fields, gives a ring made of wild flowers to her grandfather, a poet.
The poet, whose ten fingers are covered with wildflower rings, is overwhelmed with happiness and doesn't know what to do, while Ayoung is busy weaving wildflowers, perhaps intending to give them as a necklace as well.
“You have to look closely to see it/it’s pretty//You have to look at it for a long time to see it’s lovely//You are the same.” The poet’s feelings towards his granddaughter Ayoung are no different from those contained in “Wildflowers 1.”

The poet wears a short-brimmed hat and pedals a bicycle with a basket attached, “seeking out paths as much as possible/following the stream.”
And “when you meet someone you know, get off your bike and say hello by shaking hands.”
Ayoung sits on the back of her grandfather's bicycle, listening to his whistle and cheering at the sight of the pomegranates hanging in abundance.
The poet expresses his wish in “Hope”: “Please stay there smiling like that forever / Be pretty.”

To Ayoung, who is now old enough to enter elementary school, the poet sends a message of support: “It hurts, but spring has come again // Still, I’m starting again // I’m going on a long journey again // No matter what, I’m on your side.”
Even in “this windy world,” the poet has Ayoung, and she “becomes a tree that never sways.” On the other hand, the poet offers words of comfort to Ayoung, who is going through a stormy period after entering middle school, saying, “No matter what, child, / love yourself / and don’t forget that the most precious thing in this world / is yourself.”

The gentle yet heartwarming story of the poet and his granddaughter, Ayoung, continues after Ayoung grows up, becomes a working adult, gets married, and has a baby.
The poet is always curious about Ayoung's well-being as she lives a busy life.
But what can I do? Ah-young has her own world that she cultivates.
The poet looks back and thinks of Ayoung as a child, a faint smile forming on his lips.
“How am I/who lives in your heart these days?//You who live in my heart/are still pretty and cute.”

The poet's poetry and the exquisitely harmonious emotional paintings of Dahong, along with the gentle story of the poet grandfather and his cute and lively granddaughter Ayoung, create a touching and moving experience, like an animation.
The collaboration between poet Na Tae-joo and webtoon artist Dahong, which captures the beauty of living moments and the preciousness of everything close to us, is as sweet as a birthday present from a loved one.

Recommendation

In those days when there was a severe lack of reading material, we still had comics.
Among them, Park Ki-dang's cartoons are the books we read the most after textbooks.
I can't tell you how beneficial, entertaining, comforting and dream-filled it has been.
As I grew up and became a poet, and as I met mostly young readers, I developed a desire to publish my poetry as a comic book.
This is also a kind of romance and could be considered one of the bucket list items.
Why do we turn textbooks and even novels into comics, but not poetry? That long-awaited wish has finally been fulfilled, and now, my poetry has been combined with comics to form a book.
The artist who drew the picture, Dahong, is said to be an artist who has received a good response from the younger generation.
I would like to thank author Dahong for her detailed illustrations, and I hope that this book will be helpful to young people.
_Na Tae-ju (poet)

Looking at a poem for a long time and imagining the feelings and warm stories it conveys was a small comfort to me in my weary daily life.
I had a lot of concerns about whether I should develop the story of one poem like a short comic, or whether I should develop several poems into short stories, or whether I should naturally unfold them into some kind of larger flow.
On the one hand, I was secretly looking forward to seeing where the poet's and the cartoonist's perspectives would meet and at what points they would express themselves with different colors.
Have you ever looked at a single poem, a single word, for so long in your life?
As the poet said, looking at it for a long time made it lovely, purifying, and refreshing.
I hope that this book will provide a small comfort to those who open it, and provide a warm rest in the gaps of time.
_Dahong (Naver Webtoon writer)
