『Western History Lectures』 is an introductory book on Western history that covers the entire history of the West, from ancient Greece and Rome to the fall of socialism in the late 20th century.
A revised and expanded edition is presented six years after the first edition was published in 2016.
This revised and expanded edition includes new chapters on the "Hellenistic Period," "The Era of 19th-Century Nationalism," and "The Russian Revolution," and further enhances the completeness of some chapters by revising and supplementing the content.

『Lectures on Western History』 is the first introductory book on Western history written by domestic researchers in 25 years since 『Lectures on Western History』 (1992).
Since its first publication, 『Lectures on Western History』 has served its purpose as a textbook for courses on "Western Cultural History" or "Introduction to Western History" offered in liberal arts and major courses at universities, and as an introductory book on Western history that provides both entertainment and educational storytelling for general readers.

Publisher's Review
A New Introduction to Western History that Responds to the Demands of a Changing Era
Breaking away from Eurocentrism and actively reflecting social and cultural history

Looking back, the transition period between the 20th and 21st centuries was a period of great change that brought an end to the 'short 20th century' and opened a new era.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist regimes in Eastern Europe brought an end to the Cold War, but international tensions have only intensified, and the world situation has become far more complex as confrontation and conflict between civilizations have deepened and the competition for hegemony between the United States and China has intensified.
Moreover, with the rapid development of information and communication technology and the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, capitalism has gone beyond the stages of 'industrial' and 'financial' capitalism and has become sophisticated and concentrated to a degree previously unimaginable, and human daily life itself has undergone great changes due to climate change and ecological crises.
Amidst these changes, existing historical interpretations and narratives inevitably faced new challenges. The "Western History Lectures" was designed as a new introductory textbook on Western history to meet the demands of the changing times.

『Western History Lectures』 aimed to capture new research trends and achievements that reflected the changes at the turn of the century.
First, it sought to break away from Eurocentrism by considering not only the internal logic of Western history but also movements outside the West, and by viewing Europe and the West not as the center of the world but as one of many regions and civilizations.
Second, by avoiding a one-sided narrative of politics and actively reflecting the research findings of social and cultural history, we sought to embrace new issues concerning regional exchange, contact, and migration, and to examine various aspects of human society together.
Third, we have tried to make it easy for anyone interested in Western history to read by providing a description of the historical context and meaning using various materials such as maps and diagrams.
