Book Introduction
Beyond simply recovering
Become a more resilient human being than ever before!

“Resilience lies in the process of trying to become a better person than before, not in the results that come out of every time we do something.” This is the concept of resilience that Dr. Alia Bozilova, a world-renowned resilience expert and psychologist, emphasizes in this book.
It's not just about recovering from adversity; it's about using that experience as a springboard to become a better person.
Working with special forces, top athletes, effective leaders, and entrepreneurs who have operated in extreme situations, the author discovered a four-step ABCD process for resilience: Awareness, Belonging, Curiosity, and Drive.
Building on this foundation, we also introduce useful resilience tools to help you unleash your potential in everyday life.
Filled with guidance that can serve as a driving force in life whenever faced with uncertain moments, this book teaches those struggling with immediate stress and trials how to build the mental muscle to see life from a broader, broader perspective.

Into the book
Resilience is not a set quality, but a series of decisions we make that allow us to grow in important areas of our lives.
Resilience is not fixed; it is fluid.
Resilience is the result of the decisions we make about what and how we engage, what and how we anticipate, how committed we are to it, and what we choose to keep and what we let go of.
And it is also the result of the decisions we make, especially when faced with the trials of life, when we choose whether to grow or shrink.

--- p.14

People with high resilience have one thing in common.
It is a clear sense of purpose.
Resilience grows when we accept that we are part of our environment and can have a positive impact on it, and when we feel a sense of belonging.
Whatever crisis, change, or demand I face, if it's part of my purpose, I can more easily maintain balance as I go through the change.

--- p.125

It is possible to be resilient even when you feel like you've reached your limit, have reached a dead end, or can't move forward.
Yet we stand still and try to cope with despair.
Vaguely enduring pressure is not resilience.
It's just grit! Resilience allows us to slow down and shift our perspective, allowing us to more effectively harness and transform pressure into a springboard for recovery, allowing us to look beyond obstacles long enough to recognize the rich potential waiting beyond them.
A change of perspective shows that even the rocks blocking your path can become stepping stones to a land of endless opportunity.

--- p.217

The question we must ask now is why is it so difficult to take consistent action toward a better future?
This is because it takes effort to change the current state.
To do this, we need to use our imagination to imagine what a better state would look like.
The more you imagine it, the more unbearable the current situation will seem.
If you want to make a change but find it difficult, consistency and curiosity will help you move from where you are.

--- p.224

Don't fall into the pit! Sometimes we fall into the pit of anger and depression and hesitate to climb out.
Resilience is finding the resources, support, and energy needed to embrace, embrace, and immerse yourself in something new.

--- p.297

The desire to pursue challenges rather than avoid them, to lean into and learn from new ones rather than cling to the familiar, to constantly improve yourself rather than prove yourself right, and to always imagine something better rather than dwell on the bad are the foundations of resilience.
Resilience in all these areas requires patience.

Publisher's Review
“Resilience isn’t just about getting back up again.

“It’s about becoming a truly better, more resilient human being.”

Received the UN Commendation and the New Zealand Defence Force Merit Medal
Resilience classes from world-renowned resilience psychologists

We all dream of being resilient people who don't get discouraged and bounce back.
But true resilience doesn't mean simply overcoming and getting back up.
It is about turning adversity from an 'obstacle' into a 'stepping stone' and using it as a springboard to grow in a better direction than before.
This is exactly the kind of resilience that the book, “Elastic Human,” conveys.
This book emphasizes that true resilience is the power to move beyond recovery and grow into a stronger, better person than before.

Dr. Alia Bozilova, a resilience expert and author of this book, began exploring the principles of resilience while working for New Zealand's Special Forces.
While most people find it overwhelming simply to face adversity, why do some people recover, grow, and even thrive after adversity? The author found the answer primarily in special forces soldiers.
As an officer and senior psychologist in Special Forces, the author helped soldiers maintain resilience while operating in some of the world's most challenging conditions.
For special forces soldiers who must perform missions in situations where their lives may be threatened at any time or place, resilience is a truly essential skill.

The author passionately collected examples and strategies from the resilience heroes he met, and discovered that they all followed the same principles.
This book is the result of that research, organizing the principles of resilience in an easy-to-understand and systematic way.
We present a clear and new perspective on the concept and principles of resilience, which we have only vaguely understood so far.
As you turn the pages, you will also find useful resilience tools for life.
These essential tools will help us identify what strengthens us and what drains us, and teach us how to cultivate habits and a mindset that work for us.
It will give you an opportunity to seriously reflect on yourself and realize how much potential you have.

“Turn obstacles into stepping stones.”
The ABCD Steps to Becoming a Resilient Human

In addition to special forces, the author has worked with people in sports, business, government, and the arts who need to achieve their best.
The talented resilient people the author has worked with around the world have all transformed the context of their lives by building resilience, transforming from paralyzing injuries to strength, poverty to abundance, deprivation to generosity, loneliness to a sense of community, and aimless anxiety and confusion to a sense of purpose.

Through in-depth conversations with them, the author discovered the ABCD four-step process of resilience.
The process consists of four stages: Awareness, Belonging, Curiosity, and Drive.
Each step teaches you how to transform the "obstacles" in front of you into "stepping stones" for the future, using clearer awareness, a deeper sense of belonging, broader curiosity, and stronger drive to grow into a resilient human being.
The author explains that the four stages are essential and progressive, with each stage fueling the next.
He argues that the ABCD stages do not proceed in a straight line, but rather evolve into a powerful loop, which can continuously strengthen resilience.

It also says that we all have the same resources for resilience and growth.
In addition, he advises that it is important to place the ingredients in the correct order and provide appropriate conditions for each ingredient.
Only those who continually cultivate the clearer awareness, deeper sense of belonging, greater curiosity, and stronger drive outlined in this book will emerge as truly resilient individuals possessing exceptional resilience at every moment.
The authors are adamant that there are no shortcuts to supplementing or strengthening resilience.
According to the author, there are two main ways to build resilience.
‘Raising them correctly’ and ‘raising them repeatedly.’

“Listen to the voice of hope rather than the voice of doubt!”
A guide to inner growth that will fuel your life in moments of uncertainty.

Successful people don't let the voices of doubt and fear in their heads be their excuses.
But instead of listening to the voice of hope, people often listen more to the voice of doubt and fear.
For such people, the author included vivid words from various resilient people he interviewed throughout the book.
The philosophy of resilience, deeply ingrained in them with a growth mindset, will instill in those who are easily swayed by the negative voices in their hearts a firm and unwavering courage that will never crumble.

“Regret and worry erode your resilience, so don’t let that drain you.”
“You have to cultivate a mindset that allows you to pursue what you want to achieve, rather than what you want to avoid.”
“Resilience depends on the ability to energize and stay connected.”
“There’s nothing better for resilience than having a desire to be challenged at every moment.”
“To build resilience to face great challenges, you need to have all the basics in place and be prepared to do your best.”

If you take to heart and practice the message of resilience when faced with stress or trials in life, you will be able to develop a strong mentality like these people.
The author, who calls himself a proud resilience enthusiast, says resilience is not an innate quality, but something that must be cultivated with patience.
There are always situations that come up that make you feel uneasy and like you can't do anything.
This book will serve as a solid guide to inner growth as you face those uncertain moments.
