Director Jin-ho Heo's debut film, "Christmas in August," which wrote a new chapter in the history of Korean melodramatic films, is being reborn as an original script collection 27 years after its release.
"Christmas in August" is a work that contains a simple but heartbreaking love story between Jeong-won (Han Suk-kyu), a photo studio owner living on a limited time, and Da-rim (Shim Eun-ha), a parking enforcement officer.
The story of Jeongwon quietly preparing for the end of his life and Darim innocently approaching him left a deep resonance in the hearts of many.
Without flashy confessions or dramatic scenes, it portrayed the waves of emotion that gently permeate everyday life through delicate sentiments and the aesthetics of space, giving a refreshing shock to the Korean film industry at the time.
"Christmas in August" attracted 450,000 viewers in Seoul alone before the Korean Film Council's integrated computerized system for calculating movie theater tickets was fully implemented.
At the time of its release, it was recognized for its artistic quality, winning the Best Film and Best Actress awards at the 34th Baeksang Arts Awards, Best Picture, Best Actress, Best New Director, and Best Cinematography at the 19th Blue Dragon Film Awards, Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the 18th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Best New Director, Best Screenplay, and Special Jury Prize at the 36th Grand Bell Awards.
As film critic Lee Dong-jin commented, “For the past 20 years, Korean melodramas have ultimately been about Jin-ho Heo,” it has established itself as the “most beloved Korean film” chosen by film directors, actors, and screenwriters, and as a monumental masterpiece of Korean melodramas selected by film critics and audiences.

Publisher's Review
Despite featuring a protagonist facing death, it doesn't lead to easy melodrama.
It does not exploit emotions and follows the precious knots of our lives.
The ability to innovate the genre's narrative style without following genre conventions.
It is an amazing state of refusing to shed tears and drawing out tears.
_Joo Seong-cheol, editor-in-chief of Cineplay, from an interview included in the script collection
"Christmas in August" won the Best Screenplay Award at the Grand Bell Awards and was later included in a high school textbook, receiving praise for its literary merit.
Director Jin-ho Heo also mentioned in an interview that he was worried about whether the script itself would be good enough to be made into a movie.
Through this script collection, you can see the original script, which contains beautiful lines with a restrained atmosphere and lingering, simple lines.
Additionally, over 60 high-quality still cuts from the film, including previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage, are included to vividly convey the emotion of the film.
Of particular note is the in-depth interview between director Jin-ho Heo and Cineplay editor-in-chief Joo Seong-cheol.
From the background of the creation of famous scenes to behind-the-scenes stories that arose during actual filming based on the script, and in-depth conversations surrounding the director's intentions, fans can hear the director's voice that they have long wanted to hear.
The love of fans, which has led to countless re-watches and pilgrimages to the film's setting, the "Grassland Photo Studio," shows that this film is not just a work of art, but has become a sensibility for a generation.
The restrained sensibility of “Christmas in August” brings back memories of those days when simply observing something quietly was enough.
The publication of this script collection goes beyond simply commemorating past films; it will be a meaningful opportunity to shed new light on the essence of Korean melodramatic films and remind film lovers of their inherent charm.
