A New Adventure in Geography Education
Description
Book Introduction
When I was teaching geography at school, one of my translator's colleagues once said this:
“Where do we have the luxury of worrying about things like that (the essence of education)?”
“It’s hard to keep up with what the Office of Education has set...” In a given curriculum, limited time and space, and a performance-oriented atmosphere that demands a certain level of results, thinking about ‘meaningful geography education for students’ might have been seen as the work of an idealist lacking a sense of reality.
Professor Gert Biesta, a world-renowned educationist, explains this reality with the concept of ‘learnification.’
He criticizes the educational trend of overemphasizing students' needs and desires in a performance-oriented culture, pointing out that this leads teachers to focus solely on the question of "how to teach."
In other words, it is considered the role of a competent teacher to think about how to effectively convey the given content and how to achieve results.
However, Biesta emphasizes that it is time to put education back at the center of its fundamental questions for 'valuable behavior change' - 'what' and 'why'.
Professor Steve Puttick's book can be said to be a response to the future-oriented discourse on geography education that was born within this very trend.
This book offers reflective and balanced insights into fundamental questions such as “What is the geography we teach?”, “Why is geography still valuable to students today?”, “What have we overlooked in geography education so far?”, and “What needs to be changed and how?”
Through this, readers are introduced to new possibilities for future geography curriculum design and teaching methods.
