Publisher's Review
preface
“What should I prepare to take Korean classes?”
“What kind of learners will I be teaching and what do they need?”
“How do I find class materials and how do I structure my classes?”
I wrote this book while recalling my concerns from when I was a beginner Korean language teacher.
The time I came home and beat myself up after failing to give a satisfactory answer to a student who asked the difference between '-습니다' and '-으십십이' in the first class; the time I searched for papers in the library and filled my notebook with notes to explain the difference between '-서', '-니까', and '-던' to my students; the time I was suddenly assigned to teach a senior lecturer's class outline and quickly turned around to write these words on the board so as not to show my flustered expression when a student asked the difference between '믿', '신임', and '신용', and came up with example sentences at the speed of Chat GPT to avoid the situation; the time I wandered around movie theaters, subway stations, and supermarkets to find class materials...
All these memories remain in my head as a novice Korean teacher, Eun-kyung Lee.
These days, there are many resources available to help beginning teachers, from textbooks to teacher's guides, and there's a plethora of images and videos that can be used as teaching aids.
Nevertheless, I think the mindset of teachers who teach Korean for the first time is not much different now than it was then.
This book was written with the heart of a senior teacher guiding junior Korean language teachers.
I wanted to provide a broad overview of what Korean language education is, while also explaining step-by-step how to teach each area.
And for content that cannot be included due to space limitations, we have introduced reference materials and websites so that readers can study in depth on their own.
It has also been designed to be used as a textbook for universities and Korean language teacher training institutions, including learning objectives, verification questions, and things to think about.
I sincerely hope that this book will serve as a guide for prospective Korean language teachers entering the unknown world of Korean language education.
Based on this, we hope that you will gradually build upon your studies and experiences to create your own Korean language education story.
I would like to express my special gratitude to Kim Yong-min, CEO of Together Walking People, who, as the editor and first reader of this book, kindly took on the entire publishing process.
I would like to express my special gratitude to the CEO for beautifully filling in every nook and cranny of the rough manuscript with his meticulous care.
Finally, I sincerely hope that everyone who reads this book will grow into a great Korean language teacher in their own right.
