This book was written to guide readers into the fascinating world of industrial engineering (IE) through easy and entertaining stories.


Industrial engineering is a discipline that combines social science, natural science, and engineering principles to design and operate optimal processes and systems, thereby helping industrial activities to be "better."
In particular, it plays a key role in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, that is, in the data-driven digital transformation of our society.
However, despite the fact that industrial engineering, as a representative field of applied science and technology, has contributed significantly to the development of our society and industry, its relatively short history and the broad and ambiguous meaning of "industry" seem to have prevented it from being properly communicated to the general public.
I am concerned that these issues may discourage excellent prospective college students from applying to industrial engineering programs.

The Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, representing the industrial engineering field in Korea, has been working to popularize industrial engineering.
To make industrial engineering easily accessible to high school students and the general public, we first published 『Maestro of Engineering, Industrial Engineering』 in 2010 as a popular book, followed by 『Industrial Engineering Opening a Smart World』 in 2016 and 『Designing the Future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution』 in 2018.
As part of these ongoing efforts, we have published "Season 2 of Industrial Engineering: Opening a Smart World," which reflects the rapidly changing times and new industrial paradigms and technologies, this year, marking the 50th anniversary of the society.


"Season 2 of Industrial Engineering: Opening a Smart World" is the result of the "collective intelligence" activities of our society members, who shared the passion and effort of the need for "popularizing industrial engineering."
We selected 14 representative fields of industrial engineering, and 19 experts representing each field participated in the writing, unraveling their valuable knowledge and experience in industrial engineering into 'easy and fun stories'.
In addition, this book was prepared with the intention of further developing the existing 『Industrial Engineering Opening a Smart World』.
To this end, we have strengthened our writing team, updated the content of each topic, and added the topic of "Industrial Artificial Intelligence" to better reflect the changes in society and industry over the years.
We also included an appendix introducing related university departments to assist middle and high school students interested in industrial engineering.
