Publisher's Review
Unlike the second edition, this revised edition focuses on a single category, ASD, instead of PDDs. The revised contents of the third edition are summarized as follows.
First, the second edition comprised ‘Part 1 Overview’ of three chapters, but the third edition comprised ‘Part 1 Overview’ of two chapters: ‘Chapter 1: Basics of Autism Spectrum Disorder’ and ‘Chapter 2: Laws Related to Autism Spectrum Disorder.’
In particular, Chapter 1 clarifies the relationship between related terms by dividing ASD-related terms into academic related terms, legal related terms, and other related terms, and examines the diagnostic system of ASD from DSM-III (APA, 1980) to the recently published DSM-5-TR (APA, 2022).
Second, the 2nd edition dealt with the five subtypes of PDDs (autistic disorder, Rett disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Asperger disorder, and unspecified pervasive developmental disorder) individually in one chapter in 'Part 2 Types of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs)', but the 3rd edition introduced them all together in one chapter of 'Chapter 3 Concepts of DSM Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs)', and together with 'Chapter 4 Concepts of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)' and 'Chapter 5 Concepts of DSM Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)', formed 'Part 2 Concepts of Autism Spectrum Disorders'.
Third, the second edition divided 'Part 3 Interventions for Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs)' into two chapters, each dealing with behavioral interventions and educational interventions, whereas the third edition organized 'Part 3 Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders' into five chapters, and examined single intervention strategies, comprehensive intervention models, biological interventions, and cognitive interventions in addition to behavioral interventions and educational interventions.
Fourth, DSM-5 and ICD-11 introduced a single category called ASD, and considered ‘abnormal responses to sensory stimuli (i.e., abnormal sensory responses)’, previously described as a secondary related characteristic, as a major characteristic and included it in the ASD diagnostic criteria.
Therefore, compared to the second edition, the third edition covers more extensively the abnormal sensory responses of ASD.
Fifth, autism spectrum disorder, a subtype of PDDs, was previously divided into low-functioning autism (LFA) and high-functioning autism (HFA). However, after the publication of DSM-5, which replaced PDDs with ASD, ASD is now divided into low-functioning autism spectrum disorder (LFASD) and high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD).
Sixth, the author tried his best to review the parts that he felt needed revision and supplementation.
For example, in Chapter 5, regarding the assessment of ASD, the assessment tools released before 2000 were deleted and newly developed or revised assessment tools were added, and Chapter 8 was supplemented by adding content on the functional assessment of behavior.
