In library work, the organization of materials is largely divided into classification and cataloging. Classification began with the concern of how to organize and manage branches of knowledge well in the library, and cataloging started with brief records that replaced actual books due to the increasing volume of books, and provides information on the confirmation of materials, the relationships and history between materials, and whether or not they are in the library.
Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that the history of library cataloging is the history of libraries, as it is considered a core task of library work.


In particular, in the field of library and information science education, if major students do not have knowledge of such lists, they will find that in a reality where materials with the same content shared globally are produced and distributed in various media, libraries will not be able to record the historical significance of the materials by clarifying the relationships and chronology between the materials, which will cause great confusion in the library's original role of preserving, maintaining, and inheriting the intellectual heritage of humanity.
