French History through Literature
Description
Book Introduction
Stendhal, who said that “the novel is a mirror that reflects society,” named the subtitle of his representative novel, “The Red and the Black,” “Chronicle of 1830.”
One of the main functions of literature is to reflect society and its history, and to reflect on and introspect upon them.
It is through this work that the zeitgeist that will lead a new history is created.
This textbook examines the major historical trends from the 16th-century Renaissance, the dawn of modernity, to the 20th-century, the era of so-called late capitalism. Through the process of analyzing masterpieces of French literature that presented a new zeitgeist, it examines specifically how great writers confronted the lies created by power and the resulting historical misfortunes, and what visions they created to pursue human happiness.
