Into the book
When ETFs are traded in the market between investors without a redemption order, fund managers do not need to buy or sell the underlying assets, saving on transaction fees and taxes incurred when redemption orders are placed.
Additionally, ETFs can provide investors with greater liquidity than the underlying assets they actually hold, due to the convenience of being traded in real time on an exchange.
For example, during the global financial crisis caused by the Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008, the large investment banking (IB) banks, which were dealers in the U.S. bond market and were supposed to buy and sell bonds, were unable to fulfill their roles due to the financial crisis, and the U.S. bond market itself came to a standstill. However, when it was revealed that U.S. investment-grade corporate bond ETFs and high-yield bond ETFs containing these bonds were traded by ETF liquidity providers, not IB banks, this provided some relief to investors.
--- From "Chapter 1. First Encounter with ETFs"
Recently, as investors' understanding of ETFs has increased, there are more and more cases of additionally checking and comparing other costs, including transaction costs incurred when trading stocks or bonds within an ETF, index usage fees paid to index calculation agencies, and fund audit costs that funds are required to conduct regularly, in addition to fund fees.
This is because fund fees appear low, but other expenses are often high, which often results in higher costs for investors.
Other high costs include trading commissions incurred when trading stocks and bonds within the fund and spread costs associated with swap transactions.
Please note that other expenses tend to decrease as the fund size increases, so investors who find it difficult to track other expenses individually are advised to select ETFs with large net assets.
--- From "Chapter 2. Building Basic ETF Knowledge"
What makes a good ETF? As discussed above, a good ETF is one where the fund manager manages the ETF well, ensuring the net asset value tracks the index without any "tracking error," and where liquidity and price management in the market are smooth, resulting in a small "disparity" (the difference between the ETF's net asset value and the market price).
So how can investors find these ETFs? Frankly, it's not easy for investors to compare the tracking errors and divergence rates of ETFs tracking the same index.
This is because it is difficult for investors to directly compare the tracking errors and divergence rates of over 800 ETFs.
From an investor's perspective, an easy way to choose a good ETF is to choose one with large net assets and high trading volume.
This is because many assets have already been gathered through verification by many people and transactions are active.
--- From "Chapter 3. In-Depth ETF Study"
After only two weeks of working, I gave notice of my resignation, saying, “This doesn’t suit my aptitude, so I’m giving up.”
Normally, when a trainee employee resigns, they are just sent away without any special interview. However, after returning the employee ID, the CFO (Chief Financial Officer), who was in charge of human resources and finance at the time, asked the employee to come into the conference room for a moment, and the interview began after the resignation was processed.
He said to me, who had already decided to leave and returned his employee ID, "How can someone so young give up after just two weeks? If you work with that kind of attitude, you'll never succeed anywhere."
He admonished them, saying, “Don’t do this anywhere else.”
At that moment, two choices in life came to mind.
'If I stay still and leave this conference room, I will never see this office or these people again and I will live a different life.
But now is the last moment of my life when I can turn back my decision… .'
I suddenly said this as the story was almost finished.
“I’m sorry, but I’ll just go back.”
“Uh…huh? What did you say?”
“I will cancel my resignation.”
"Oh really? Hey, HR Manager, he's just going to keep going? Tear up this document." (Shaking the former employee)
That's how my corporate life at Samsung Investment Trust Management began again, and I ended up working for the company for a whopping 17 years until October 2019.
As a result of my determination and hard work, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a "bond trader" in the bond management division, which could lead to becoming a fund manager, the crown jewel of an asset management company, just over a year after joining the company, and I was able to begin my bond management work.
