Mecenat Korea 29 Selections
Description
Book Introduction
A vivid record of the symbiosis between business, culture, and the arts.
"29 Mecenat Korea" is a record that collects and examines the cultural and artistic sponsorship activities of Korean groups, corporations, and foundations.
Based on the planned series "Mycenas" published by the Financial Today Culture Department from 2023 to 2025, this book summarizes the current state and philosophy of corporate mecenat, aiming to be a "white paper on corporate cultural and artistic sponsorship" and a new form of cultural archive.
The book's title comes from Gaius Maecenas, an aristocratic politician who patronized the ancient Roman poets Horace and Virgil.
His name later became a common noun meaning a patron of the arts, and this book aims to shed light on Korean companies today as "modern Mycenaes."
This book includes examples of cultural and artistic support from the Samsung Cultural Foundation, Kumho Cultural Foundation, CJ Cultural Foundation, LG Group, Hyundai Motor Group, Taekwang Group, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Amorepacific Group, Hyosung and HS Hyosung Group, NCSoft, Netmarble, Hyundai Department Store, Gagu Talk World, Crown Haitai Confectionery Group, Shinhan Card, POSCO Group, Hoban Group, S-Oil, Lotte Scholarship Foundation, Nongshim, Riot Games Korea, Dong-A Pharmaceutical, Kolon Group, Hanwha Life Insurance, Hana Bank, BNK Busan Bank, Hanjin Group, Bodyfriend, and Sempio Foods (in serial order).
Each chapter introduces cultural and artistic activities, including exhibitions and performances planned or sponsored by the company, artist support, and educational programs, in a three-dimensional manner, with photographs.
Key facts are based on company cooperation and official sources.
Although corporate sponsorship has been featured intermittently in the media, this is the first time it has been published in book form.
『29 Mecenat Koreas』 goes beyond simple corporate promotion.
① Redefining the role of corporations in the art ecosystem,
② Presenting examples of sustainable management through culture and arts,
③ We place significance on leaving a topographical map of Korean-style mecenat as a collective archive.
This book, which documents how business and art have worked together to build a legacy of time, will be a valuable resource for corporate practitioners and policymakers considering cultural and artistic sponsorship, as well as for those in the arts and researchers.

[Epilogue] Companies Reaching Out to Art: A Record of Their Brilliant Companions
Publisher's Review
Informing our citizens of corporate cultural and artistic support activities,
A reference book that will serve as an example for companies that will participate in Mecenat in the future.
MECENAT is known as the act of individuals or companies sponsoring or providing financial support for arts or cultural activities.
'Mecenat' has grown in a direction where businesses and art help each other and coexist, rather than simply being sponsorship or support from one party.
This was because it was a 'win-win effect' where companies could promote creativity and strengthen their image by sponsoring art projects that had values that aligned with their business activities, and the art sector could gain wider audiences and benefits through financial and resource support.
This book introduces examples of culture and art planned or sponsored by companies, including exhibitions, performances, and support for creators.
This is a record of the mecenat activities of 29 companies, ranging from well-known large corporations to lesser-known small and medium-sized enterprises. It is also a photo album that was created using photographic materials provided by the relevant groups, companies, and foundations.
A company is an organization that pursues profit, but 'Mecenat' is about values that go beyond profit, empathy that goes beyond competition, and responsibility that goes beyond efficiency.
Mecenat is not simply a concept of sponsorship.
When a company reaches out to the arts, it is also an expression of its will to look further into the future of society.
Culture and art are areas that cannot be explained solely by market logic.
Nevertheless, the companies featured in this book chose uncertain and invisible values, and that choice led to not only simple social contribution, but also a corporate philosophy and a question for the future.
This is a record of such will being quietly but steadily put into practice.
This book goes beyond simple corporate promotion. It redefines the role of corporations in the arts ecosystem, shares examples of sustainable management through culture and the arts, and serves as a compass that presents role models for companies that will participate in future mecenat programs.
