Into the book
I've been studying the science of beauty for over a decade, but there are still countless misconceptions to uncover and concepts to interpret.
The beauty industry has long been reluctant to disclose detailed scientific details about its products, leaving room for misinformation to proliferate.
Moreover, many companies profit by selling consumers false hope and encouraging the spread of all sorts of misconceptions that benefit the company.
--- p.9 From “What is Beauty?”

When fragrance is added to a product, it has a huge impact on how consumers perceive other functions of that product.
This is the so-called 'halo effect'.
In one study, participants reported that their hair felt softer and shinier when shampoos with the same ingredients were scented with citrus than when they were scented with camphor.
--- p.30 From “What functions do the various ingredients contained in beauty products have?”

Even products that only have the effect of covering up wrinkles can make the same claim, saying, "It makes wrinkles less visible."
On the other hand, if a product is advertised as "promoting collagen production to reduce wrinkles," it may seem much more effective, but unless it is a pharmaceutical product, such claims are usually against regulations and ultimately only show that the brand company did not pay attention to the relevant laws and may have even ignored other steps in the product development process.
--- p.34 From “Can we trust the research results presented in beauty marketing?”

The ingredients list alone doesn't tell you everything about a product.
This is also due to the company's intention not to disclose to competitors exactly how it made its products.
Moreover, we do not know how effective the product is.
It's very similar to cooking.
Using the exact same ingredients, you can either make a great dish or a terrible dish.
Just as there are different foods that suit my taste even with the same ingredients, there are also different products that suit my body better.
--- p.38 From “What can you tell from the label on the product?”

For general skin care products other than those containing antibiotics, there is little evidence to support the claim that products should be replaced periodically because continued use can lead to resistance and loss of effectiveness.
Skincare products may seem to work well when you first use them, but their effectiveness may seem to diminish over time. However, once you stop using them, your skin will usually return to its pre-use state.
--- p.66 From “Do I Need to Change My Skincare Method?”

The sun protection factor (SPF) is a globally recognized indicator useful for comparing different sunscreens. SPF is calculated by comparing the redness (erythema) caused by UV rays on skin exposed to the product to that of skin not exposed to the product.
For example, if you use SPF 30 sunscreen properly, you will need to be exposed to UV rays 30 times more often before your skin starts to turn red than if you were not using the sunscreen.

--- p.90 From “How to Choose Sunscreen”

It is becoming increasingly common to see celebrities in their 50s and 60s appearing on TV with faces as smooth as a baby's skin.
If you keep seeing that kind of thing, you will become more conscious of your wrinkled face and look for a solution.
But we must not forget that celebrities spend enormous amounts of money on surgeries and high-performance procedures to maintain such looks.
--- p.110 From “How to prevent wrinkles?”

Although shampoo and conditioner do not necessarily have to be used as a set, they are usually manufactured to be used together.
For example, a shampoo with a high content of conditioning polymers may be paired with a lighter conditioner to create an overall balanced look.
If you have long hair, it is best to choose a shampoo that is suitable for your scalp condition and a conditioner that is suitable for your hair condition.
--- p.154 From “How to choose shampoo and conditioner?”

It is said that we eat 3kg of lipstick in our lifetime.
Considering that 3kg is equivalent to 800 lipsticks, this claim is a huge exaggeration! The average person applies about 24mg of lipstick per day.
So, even if you apply lipstick every day for 70 years, the total amount used is only about 600g.
Moreover, the amount that enters the mouth is much less than that.

--- p.184 From “What’s in Lipstick?”

Several studies are still finding that some ingredients can be potentially hazardous.
Makeup ingredients can get into your eyes, scratch your cornea, and interfere with the eye's ability to lubricate.
People who frequently use eye makeup are more likely to develop dry eyes and experience more eye irritation.
In rare cases, pigment particles from mascara or eyeliner can stick to the cornea or eyelashes, which is even more dangerous if you wear contact lenses.
--- p.210 From "Is Eye Makeup Safe?"

Making your eyes look bigger can give you a more defined impression.
Studies have shown that people perceive their eyes to look larger when they use eyeliner and mascara.
This is an effect similar to the Delboeuf illusion, where an object appears larger when its boundary is closer to the object.
--- p.216 From “Creating a Lively and Clear Impression”

It is best to cut your nails after a shower when they are still damp.
This is because the nails are more flexible than usual and do not last long even if they break.
However, when filing your nails with a nail file, they must be dry.
Using a soft file with a medium or higher grit will help prevent your nails from splitting or falling off.

Elastic skin, defined eyes, sexy lips, shiny hair... Are there areas you invest more in and pay special attention to to achieve your beauty? This book scientifically analyzes the ingredients, efficacy, and working principles of the cosmetics we use every day, from head to toe, to reveal the best skincare methods for maximum results.

Author Michelle Wong is a product developer and science communicator who has partnered with many renowned brands, including L'Oréal and P&G.
Additionally, as a doctor of pharmaceutical and supramolecular chemistry, she has been running a beauty science platform since 2011 and currently has over 1 million followers on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
The reason I started running a beauty platform was because I was dissatisfied with the lack of publicly available information about the efficacy and ingredients of various beauty products, as well as the fact that incorrect information about such products was being spread indiscriminately online without being properly verified.

"The Science of Beauty" is the culmination of my academic research and field experience, serving as a detailed yet accessible commentary on the various questions I've been asked over the years.
From cleansing to makeup, hair and nail care, this book provides scientific evidence on how specific products work and what effects they produce, making it the ultimate guide to finding the skincare routine that's best for you.

Expensive cosmetics aren't the only answer to becoming beautiful.
