Barefoot School Kwon Taek-hwan's Barefoot Revolution
Description
Book Introduction
Walking barefoot is the beginning of healing for body and mind!
Humans need to walk barefoot on bare ground to be healthy.
A craze for barefoot walking is sweeping the nation.
Barefoot walking is a phenomenon that's practically a syndrome, with articles pouring out almost daily. We've seen a noticeable increase in people ditching their shoes and walking barefoot on the ground! This is because many people have experienced that walking barefoot stimulates the brain, boosts immunity, and promotes health by releasing free radicals and static electricity.
Above all, I felt that walking in nature and basking in the sunlight made my mind healthier.
In line with this, local governments across the country are taking the lead in creating beautiful barefoot walking paths and encouraging local residents to walk barefoot.
Professor Kwon Taek-hwan, who has been practicing barefoot walking for 23 years and has been the principal of the Korea Barefoot School for 10 years, has taught countless people how to walk barefoot and the principles of how walking barefoot can improve both body and mind. He has published a book for beginners to walk barefoot so that anyone, regardless of age or gender, can easily practice it.
Beginners come across all kinds of information when they walk barefoot.
This person says do this, that person says do that, they say slightly different things.
As a result, I start to feel uneasy for no reason.
Even though it is said to be good for the body, many people give up walking barefoot after feeling embarrassed after walking barefoot alone for a few days.
The author has personally experienced the benefits and practical methods of barefoot walking and has established a barefoot school to share them with many people. He is also actively cooperating with local governments to encourage people from Seoul to Jeju to walk barefoot on a regular basis.
If you walk barefoot for just 3, 21, or 100 days, you can stay healthy and walk barefoot for the rest of your life.
This book contains not only the 10-year history and know-how of the Barefoot School, but also the vivid physical and mental changes of those who have experienced barefoot walking, and the eco-education story containing the philosophy of the Barefoot School principal. Through this book, you too can live a healthy and energetic life.

Into the book
It is true that walking barefoot can greatly improve illness and contribute to recovery from illness.
The three main effects are brain stimulation, increased immunity, and reduction of active oxygen and static electricity.
However, walking barefoot does not cure all diseases or free all patients from illness.
So I talk more often about how walking barefoot gives you confidence and positive thoughts.
I have also seen cases of patients with liver cancer, breast cancer, and stomach cancer who became remarkably healthy after walking barefoot.
(...) It is also common for diabetes, high blood pressure, insomnia, athlete's foot, and indigestion to improve.
The belief that walking barefoot would help, along with fresh air, sunlight, a positive and grateful attitude toward life, and a natural diet, all combined to make healing possible.
--- p.29~30, from “Walking barefoot is not a panacea”
Beginners come across all kinds of information when they start walking barefoot.
This person says, "Do this," that person says, "Do that," and they say slightly different things.
As a result, I start to feel uneasy for no reason.
I also give information about walking barefoot to many people, but I am always cautious.
We try to provide as general information as possible, but it may not apply to everyone.
(...) If you are a beginner at barefoot walking, remember just one thing.
The key to barefoot walking is to make contact with the bare ground as much as possible.
So when people ask me if it's okay to walk with socks on, I always answer like this.
“For psychological stability, it is okay to do so, but it is better to walk barefoot.
If you want to wear socks, it would be good to make holes in the bottom of the socks so that your feet can connect to the ground.”
--- p.69~70, from “The best way to walk barefoot is to just walk barefoot”
‘Walking barefoot on a dirt road’, it still gives me excitement even after 10 years.
Every time I take off my shoes after a day's work, I look forward to the feeling I'll get from the dirt today.
I've encountered it well over 3,000 times, but the soil has never felt the same as it did yesterday.
For me, walking barefoot is not just a simple walking exercise.
It was a time to meet myself, meet nature, meet my family far away, meet the past day, and meet tomorrow.
(...) After walking barefoot every single day for 10 years, I was given a gift.
The number of people who support my educational philosophy and barefoot walking education is increasing, and there are many people who are recovering their physical and mental health through barefoot walking.
--- p.123, from “After Walking for 10 Years, I Found Hope”
We have experienced SARS, the new flu, MERS, and COVID-19.
Even if COVID-19 is over, no one knows what else will hit us.
Even microbiologists say that the best legacy we can leave our children today is not money, but immunity.
Even in winter, children's immunity is boosted by playing on a dirt playground.
Now is the time to give children the opportunity and time to play barefoot on the ground.
So I hope that Barefoot School will spread to children's schools.
--- p.169, from “Barefoot School, Now Must Become a School for Children”
I have seen many changes in teachers who have received barefoot walking training from me and started walking barefoot.
He said that he started sleeping better and his headaches disappeared after walking barefoot for an hour every day.
It's an amazing change.
Teachers who practiced barefoot walking reported many positive changes, including “my health improved,” “I gained confidence,” “I felt more at peace,” and “I became more able to observe nature.”
They all say the same thing.
“If you walk slowly on the ground barefoot, you can experience a world that you cannot experience when you walk with shoes on.
First you meet nature, then you meet me.
It really gives me peace of mind.
“I think that’s why I treat my students much more warmly.”
--- p.208, from “Advice for Teachers Who Want to Start Barefoot Walking Education”
As a result of diligently walking barefoot, my circulation improved, my body became lighter, and the pain in my shoulders disappeared. In addition, the results of a health checkup on August 23, 2017 showed that the muscle mass and bone density in my arms and legs increased.
My eyesight also improved by 0.2 on both sides compared to last year, reaching 1.0 on the left and 0.4 on the right. I used to have bloodshot eyes and dry eyes when I was tired, but those symptoms have also improved a lot.
When I tell people I meet about my experience of walking barefoot, I hear from friends and family that their health has improved because of walking barefoot.
Also, my 86-year-old father-in-law is a gifted student, my 76-year-old mother is a model student, and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law are honor students and attend Barefoot School.

Publisher's Review
“I am the physician of my body and the physician of my mind.
“Walking barefoot is good for your body and mind!”
Why we must walk barefoot
In 1971, the United States declared war on cancer.
At the same time, the number of people suffering from various chronic diseases also increased rapidly, putting the nation's health on alert.
The current situation in our country is the same.
Although people are living longer, the number of sick people has increased significantly.
All of this is because humanity has become distant from the earth.
We have lived on the earth for a long time, becoming one with the soil.
Until about 100 years ago, people walked an average of 30,000 steps a day.
Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said, "The basis of medicine is to enhance the body's natural healing power or immunity." However, as industrialization and urbanization led to a distance from the soil, humans lost their natural healing power, the ability to heal themselves.
Walking barefoot is the best way to connect with the earth.
The moment you take off your shoes, place your feet on the ground, and feel the heartbeat of the Earth through the soles of your feet, your body reacts and resonates with the Earth's immense energy.
This is the best way to awaken the sleeping doctor within me.
The more you walk barefoot, the more the soles of your feet are stimulated, which activates your brain's senses, improving your creativity and eliminating the need to worry about dementia.
By coming into contact with various bacteria in the soil, our immune system is strengthened, allowing us to easily overcome any virus that invades our body.
Grounding with the earth removes unnecessary active oxygen and static electricity from our bodies, allowing us to live a youthful life with an energetic body.
It helps you sleep better, reduces chronic fatigue, headaches, and back pain, improves flat feet, and even deepens your breathing, allowing you to breathe through your belly.
Walking barefoot isn't a panacea, but it certainly awakens the doctor within you.
Walking barefoot is powerful.
Walking barefoot: when, where, and how to do it
Now, many people know that walking barefoot is good for them.
However, there are three main reasons why people are reluctant to start walking barefoot.
I'm worried I'll get stabbed.
I'm worried because the soil is dirty.
I'm worried about what other people think.
The author, who is the principal of the Barefoot School in Korea, says that if you are worried about getting pricked, you can just walk slowly during the day, and if you think the dirt is dirty, start on a well-maintained school playground.
If you feel burdened by the gaze of others, I suggest you walk with people from Barefoot Schools across the country.
For beginners of barefoot walking who have many questions, such as how often to walk, with what mindset, what pace to walk at, how many times a week to walk, whether just walking is enough, and what to do if you have a chronic illness, the Barefoot School's 10 years of know-how are kindly explained one by one.
When asked which type of soil is best, he said that sandy loam, yellow loam, and beach sand are all good, but beach sand is good for removing active oxygen from the body, yellow loam is good for preventing dementia by waking up the brain senses, and yellow loam is the best for interacting with the good bacteria in the soil.
In particular, it explains why you should walk barefoot more in winter, how to walk barefoot safely in winter, and provides know-how to make barefoot walking more fun, such as enjoying barefoot walking in the forest with an oxygen tank, and barefoot walking picnics and trips.
Above all, all of this information is presented in a comfortable writing style, as if the author is speaking directly to you, so you can read the book in one sitting.
A barefoot meditation that sets me straight and changes the world.
Walking barefoot starts out as a way to love myself, but the more I walk, the more I come to love others and nature.
Walking barefoot makes you feel moved, amazed, and grateful for even the smallest changes in nature.
I realize that all of this is possible not because I am good, but because nature has provided it.
Also, if you walk slowly with bare feet, you will naturally meditate, so you will be free from distracting thoughts and meet your small self in the universe with humility.
Barefoot walking meditation will leave your brain clean and organized, like completely deleting information from your computer's trash can.
Above all, because you can overcome menopausal depression or seasonal affective disorder and find your own value, you have more room to look after others, become harmonious with your family, and share laughter with your neighbors.
By establishing a healthy and valuable 'me', I also gain the courage to take the lead in creating positive changes in the world.
There is a power of naturalness in walking barefoot.
Humans are also part of nature and possess naturalness, but they have lost this naturalness due to excessive material civilization.
Walking barefoot is the best way to connect with nature and keep your body and mind healthy by leaving bare feet instead of carbon footprints.
Barefoot walking blossoms in education
As the years go by, news reports come out that the number of students addicted to drugs is increasing, that Korea has the highest student suicide rate, the highest student smoking rate, and that Korea ranks last in happiness index.
The number of school violence cases reviewed since COVID-19 also reached 8,300 in 2020, 15,600 in 2021, and nearly 20,000 in 2022.
The reason this reality has come about is because our children do not move their bodies and stay away from nature.
Exercising and sweating in nature are essential for a healthy body and mind, but at some point, we became the country where students showed the least environmentally friendly behavior among OECD member countries.
Erich Pinchas Fromm said, “If your children are sick, it is revenge for not having enough time to play.”
To keep our children from getting sick again and to make our future brighter, we must give them the gift of eco-friendly movement.
Nature-friendly play that prepares students for lifelong learning, both physically and mentally, is the educational method that can bring happiness to everyone.
Fortunately, many teachers are starting to teach barefoot walking in the field, knowing that it is good for them.
By changing the school space, creating classrooms on the first floor, and allowing the children to run around the playground barefoot, not only did the children's emotions stabilize, their immunity improved, but their relationships with their friends also became stronger.
My creativity also increased and I studied harder.
This is why walking barefoot is more important for children.
“Walking barefoot is good for your body and mind!”
