Absolute Knowledge Dementia Encyclopedia
Description
Book Introduction
There is no such thing as 'good dementia' in this world! Realistic, so realistic Dementia Family Guidebook! - Based on 10 years of caregiving experience, 'Eye-level dementia education for families with dementia!' - 'Useful, practical tips that only dementia families know!' - 'A deep story about dementia!' with appropriate examples from film, psychology, and evolutionary biology! - If you read it smoothly and enjoyably, you will become a dementia expert without even knowing it! It's a book about dementia, and when you open it, it starts out of nowhere with the story of the MBC Newsdesk broadcast accident that happened in 1988. What does the incident where a young man barged into a broadcasting studio during a live broadcast and shouted, "There's a bug in my ear!" have to do with dementia? The author of this book is an ordinary person who has cared for his father, who suffers from Alzheimer's, for ten years. In order to properly care for my father, I devoured dozens of books on dementia while my life was changing, but I couldn't find any that would provide practical help to families with dementia, so I decided to write a book myself. The first difficult case the author encountered was 'Why is the diagnosis of dementia delayed?' When the family who spends 24 hours with the parents sees it, it is clear that there is something wrong with them, but the hospital determines that they are normal. And as I interacted with many families with dementia, I realized that this experience was not unique to me. It was the moment when I realized that families need to have a wealth of common knowledge about dementia in order to diagnose it early. This is precisely what led me to write the 『Absolute Knowledge Encyclopedia of Dementia』. As I cared for my father for a long time and gained experience interacting with numerous families with dementia, I felt a strong need for 'eye-level dementia education' for the general public. |

Into the book
“Many people misunderstand dementia as a ‘disease.’
Dementia is not a disease, it is a 'symptom'.
When your stomach hurts, it is called abdominal pain.
Abdominal pain is a symptom caused by certain diseases.
Stomach pain is not called 'stomach ache disease' or 'stomach ache disease'.
There are many different types of diseases that cause abdominal pain.
The same goes for dementia.
Dementia is a symptom, like a stomachache or a cough.
Dementia is a condition that occurs when our brain does not function properly.
“There is a saying that a day for a family with dementia is not 24 hours, but 36 hours, so the pain of the family is great.
The first step to reducing the suffering of families with dementia is early diagnosis, allowing patients to begin treatment quickly, and thus preventing the worsening of dementia symptoms.
The first step toward early diagnosis of dementia begins with the understanding by family members, who know the patient best, that dementia is a symptom, not a disease.
And you should also know the difference between dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease and other dementia symptoms.”
“Even if you are born with a gene that makes you vulnerable to a certain disease, if you grow up in an environment that suppresses the disease, you will not get sick easily.
The same goes for dementia.
Nigerians have a high prevalence of genes that predispose them to dementia.
However, black people living in Nigeria are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
On the other hand, black Nigerians who immigrated to the United States suffer from Alzheimer's disease at a very high rate.
These examples have led scientists to realize that genes are like 'switches'.
To turn on the lights in our homes, we need to turn on the switch.
It's like the light won't turn on unless you turn on the switch."
"Do people with dementia know they have it? People with dementia know they have it.
But as time goes by, people may not realize that they have dementia.
You begin to feel that something is strange about yourself.
People with dementia may want to deny it, but they know something strange is going on in their heads.
However, as dementia symptoms worsen, people may even forget that they have dementia.
“Many memories are lost, including the memory of having dementia.”
"Why do dementia patients get lost even in places they've lived for decades? Even though they may not remember what they had for lunch today, they vividly recall anecdotes from their military service decades ago, so I'm sure their families will remember the way home.
However, contrary to what their families think, dementia patients lose their sense of direction, or their ability to stay oriented, and are unable to find their way home.”
“Dementia patients’ delusions often start from ‘memory’ problems.
Because I don't remember eating, I have this delusion that the reason I didn't eat was because my daughter-in-law was trying to starve me to death.
So the first step to problematic behavior in dementia patients is memory loss.
“If you hide your bankbook somewhere to avoid losing it, but you don’t even remember hiding it, dementia patients start to suspect that someone has stolen their bankbook.”
“If we don’t know what role the frontal lobe plays in the human brain and simply think that dementia begins with memory loss, a situation may develop where your parents or spouse may not even notice that you have dementia.
Moreover, the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or other dementias increases with age, but the risk of developing frontotemporal dementia is higher in relatively young people in their 40s to 60s.
“Because there is a perception that dementia is a disease that occurs with age, people do not suspect that their young spouse or parents have dementia.”
“Short-term memory is stored for only a very short period of time, and if short-term memory is not deleted and is stored for a long time, it is called long-term memory.
When differentiating dementia, the concepts of short-term memory and long-term memory are very useful.
“Because it can help you distinguish whether your parent or spouse’s memory impairment symptoms are due to hippocampal damage or simple forgetfulness.”
"Why do people with amnesia forget everything about their past, yet not forget how to use a smartphone or drive a car? Remembering past events and remembering how to use something are completely different outcomes and processes.
Remembering who hated you in the past and what evil they did to you is called declarative memory.
Descriptive memory, that is, memory that can be explained in words.
“It’s hard to explain in words, like riding a bicycle, but the memory that the body remembers is called procedural memory.”
“While we cannot control or correct all of the abnormal behaviors of dementia patients, understanding how our brains work and the characteristics of dementia can help us to correct many of them.
But there is a prerequisite.
“We need to abandon our preconceived notions about dementia patients and carefully observe their usual behavior.”
“The average survival time for dementia patients is approximately 9 years.
However, the reason dementia patients survive for nine years is not because their brains continue to shrink and stop functioning at some point.
The reason dementia patients die is because they are unable to properly explain to their caregivers and doctors what is wrong with their bodies.
“This is because dementia patients have a reduced ability to manage their own bodies and communicate their physical condition to third parties.”
“The government has proposed nine rules for preventing dementia.
There are three commands, three prohibitions, and three actions.
Volume 3 is three recommendations.
① Walk at least 3 times a week, ② Eat a balanced diet of fish and vegetables, ③ Read and write diligently.
The three prohibitions are three things that must be prohibited.
① Drink less alcohol, ② Quit smoking, ③ Be careful not to hurt your head.
The three lines are three things you must do.
① Communicate frequently with family and friends, ② Get regular checkups, and ③ Get an early dementia screening every year starting from the age of 60.”

Publisher's Review
“It is possible to prevent dementia, and even prevent the rapid worsening of dementia symptoms!”
To understand dementia patients, you need to know 'how the brain works'!
There are several common misconceptions about psychology, a representative example being blood type personality theory.
No matter how many experts say that blood type and personality are not related, people are reluctant to believe it.
There's a misconception as widespread as blood type personality theory: the common misconception that humans only use 10% of their brains.
When the theory that humans only use 10% of their brains emerged, we didn't know which part of the brain was responsible for memory, how the brain controlled emotions, or where the center of vision was.
To understand dementia patients, there are two things to remember first.
First, each part of the human brain performs different functions.
Second, for the brain to function smoothly, neurotransmitters that transmit 'commands' or 'signals' must be smoothly produced in our body.
A 'diagnosis and treatment system' for dementia patients
It took a year from the time my father's dementia symptoms were discovered until he was diagnosed. Whenever dementia-related programs air on TV, the importance of early diagnosis is always emphasized. However, in reality, even if you want an early diagnosis, it's often impossible.
Diagnosing dementia is a fairly complex process.
If you are not familiar with this procedure, even if your parents are found to have dementia, they may not receive a proper diagnosis at the hospital.
Therefore, caregivers must be familiar with the principles and methods of dementia diagnosis and develop the ability to identify hospitals and medical staff that can properly diagnose dementia.
If dementia is diagnosed late or proper treatment is not received, the damage is entirely passed on to the caregiver.
Dementia Patients: How Should We Care?
The suffering experienced by families with dementia is beyond imagination.
Therefore, medical professionals treating dementia patients must pay close attention to the patients and also give much thought to how to protect their families.
Likewise, caring for dementia patients should focus on how to reduce the suffering of caregivers.
There are many ways to reduce the suffering of families with dementia, but the first is to delay the worsening of the patient's symptoms as much as possible.
If the worsening of dementia symptoms progresses very slowly, the time when the patient's abnormal behavior, such as hallucinations, appears can also be delayed as much as possible.
Another important thing is that even the smallest 'tips' can significantly reduce the burden of caregiving on caregivers.
Dementia Patients Need to Know: Support Systems and Laws
Caring for someone with dementia is like a marathon.
Since the average survival time of dementia patients is reported to be 9.3 years after diagnosis, it can be assumed that the period of time that family members care for dementia patients is approximately 10 years.
It is a burdensome task that can only be accomplished by family members.
So, if you can get help from social institutions, you should actively utilize them.
It is also important to know exactly what is true and false about the dementia system currently in place.
This is because, with the implementation of the National Dementia Responsibility System, there are quite a few people who are under the 'misconception' that the government will take care of everything for them if they are diagnosed with dementia.
This kind of misconception can become the seed of conflict between family members.
So while it's important to know what support you can get from the government, it's also important to understand the limitations of government policy.
What Dementia Patients Need to Know About Medicine and Food
Dementia doesn't just happen one day.
If you are diagnosed with dementia today, the disease causing it likely started 10 to 15 years ago.
However, before symptoms appear, we are not fully aware of what is happening in our bodies.
If bad eating habits accumulate, dementia may result.
The same goes for bad medication habits.
Conversely, if we understand how food affects our bodies and how medications work to benefit or harm us, we can prevent dementia and improve the effectiveness of dementia treatment.
The food we eat and drink becomes our blood and flesh.
But what foods are good for our bodies? To eat healthy foods, we need to understand the laws of nature and the principles of agriculture.
If you don't know the principle, you won't be able to understand it, and if you don't understand it, you won't feel the need to change your lifestyle.
