Today, hiking
Description
Book Introduction
My impatient mind became more relaxed, As I filled my eyes with good things, I was filled with positive energy! "Today, Hiking" is the story of an office worker who never knew perseverance before taking on a full-fledged hobby. This is a lively essay that records how the author became so captivated by the charm of mountaineering that he started climbing mountains every weekend. Four years into my career, the author was getting used to the hectic work life and needed a hobby to inject some vitality into his life. However, the failures of the past, which had made me start with full enthusiasm but quickly fade away, held me back. I also remembered the yoga class I had attended for a few weeks, even though I had prepared everything and even purchased a long-term membership card. "Is there any exercise that's a little lighter? I want something I can do without having to buy any equipment and without having to miss a set time..." Then, memories of climbing a mountain with my dad from about ten years ago came to mind. The author, who thus began mountaineering, climbed a mountain every weekend with the goal of 'one mountain a week' after his first hike. After experiencing the true joy of mountaineering on my first hike, I wake up in the pitch-black dawn without anyone waking me up to go on a sunrise hike, and I also travel to famous mountains all over the country on my own. Every time she climbs a mountain, she realizes how much her favorite hobby enriches her life. She says the joy of anticipating the weekend is what gives her the strength to overcome the hardships of the week. The process of thinking about which mountain to go to is exciting, and even packing your bag to climb the mountain is the beginning of a small, exciting trip. It is natural that the body and mind have become stronger. The author, who felt it was a shame to keep this wonderful hobby to himself, wrote a book in the hope that everyone would know how much the mountains mean to us. With the prolonged quarantine period making it difficult to find proper gatherings or hobbies, hiking, which can be enjoyed alone, might be the best hobby in the contactless era. |

Into the book
I remembered a time when I was in a hurry to go first and ended up bumping into someone coming at me.
'Okay, how about waiting a bit?
'I came to the mountain to enjoy my leisure time anyway, so why are you so busy?' Hiking is an exercise that can be done alone, but since we are enjoying the mountain together with nature, I think we have a duty to be a little more generous and relaxed when climbing.
Not rushing and being willing to compromise seem like basic etiquette for someone invited to the mountain.
--- p.39
The right temperature, the crimson sunset, the cool breeze, the spotless sky, and the city lights shining brightly beneath.
It was perfect for enjoying romance without missing anything.
I gazed at that beautiful scenery for a long time.
If I had my way, I would have laid out a mat and had a glass of wine that resembled the sunset.
I never knew I was such an emotional person.
I continued to look towards the setting sun, not knowing why my heart was pounding.
--- p.79
'Wow! What is that? Is it fog, or is it clouds?' Over the distant mountain ridge, something fluffy like a bed of clouds was spread out.
It looked so cozy that I would have liked to lie down on it if I could.
When I say clouds, I mean just the clouds floating in the sky.
There was nothing more refreshing than looking at it from a height equal to the clouds.
--- p.85
Leaves dyed in a variety of vibrant colors, flowers and fruits whose names are unknown, the sound of a stream that can be heard if you listen closely, and even the movements of animals running away in surprise.
Things that I would never dare to think about in the city existed here as a given and natural thing.
Thanks to this, my five senses, which had been dormant in the city, were awakened, and I could see the squirrel's quick movements and smell the scent of pine trees blowing in from afar.
At times like that, it felt as if the city was a phantom and this place was the real world behind a veil.
--- p.99
If you are a beginner hiker, I would advise you to avoid wet mountains as much as possible.
Even when it rains, all surfaces are slippery for a while after it rains, so there is a high probability of getting hurt.
In order not to slip, you have to use all your strength, and that also consumes a lot of physical strength, so you have to use twice as much strength as usual.
Also, I was so tense and focused on not slipping and going down that I didn't have much time to enjoy my surroundings.
'This is why people don't go to the mountains when it rains.' This is the thought that keeps coming to mind throughout the hike.
--- p.110
Even though I was wearing gloves, layers of clothing, thick socks, and a hat, it was still so cold that I was furious.
Just when I was starting to worry that I might get frostbite, something really strange happened.
As I passed the ridge, the climate changed surprisingly.
The cold had disappeared and the wind no longer blew.
It was obvious what we would do next.
We told the oncoming hikers this as if we knew the great truth.
“If you go up a little further, you will reach a ridge path, but it is very cold.
“Dress warmly!”
--- p.116
It would also be a good idea to bring ramen, a thermos, and coffee to help maintain body temperature.
The ramen you eat when you reach the top is more delicious than any other food (even at Jungfrau in Switzerland, they don't eat Korean cup ramen).
However, you have to be careful of stomachaches in the winter mountains. The hiking instructor I went with once got in trouble because his stomach rumbled after eating frozen kimbap.
After watching him struggle to find a bathroom, neither he nor I ever ate cold food in the winter mountains.
--- p.130
There are so many things to pack in your bag that it feels like you're traveling from the moment you pack your bags.
When sleeping bags, mats, food, tents, lanterns, folding chairs, and tables are all packed into one bag, people are amazed and say, "Wow, all these things fit?"
Experienced people can fit their bags neatly into the corners, but I, a beginner, don't have that ability, so I just stuff things in and out.
Anyway, as long as the bag lid closes, you can go on a trip whenever you want.
--- p.154
Because it was my first time, there were many awkward scenes.
The wind was so strong that I grilled meat inside the tent, but the meat fat splattered on the mat and the smell of meat lingered inside the tent, making it difficult to sleep.
The sandstorm was so strong that I couldn't help but laugh when I woke up the next morning and checked my face.
The meat-smelling rice cake had sand grains stuck to its head here and there.
Still, the combination of pork belly and grilled kimchi while looking out at the sea was something very special, and the sky filled with stars from the evening was enchanting in itself.
The sight of the tents turning on one by one (Tenpung) is also beautiful.

Publisher's Review
If you are tired both physically and mentally from your long stay in Bangkok,
Let's stick on the hiking patch, let's go to the world of Honsan!
Of all the hobbies out there, why mountain climbing?
Hiking is a refreshing exercise that energizes your life.
It is not strenuous but requires physical effort, so anyone can start and can easily approach it without any special equipment or training.
There is no set time or location, and no special cost, so you can easily and conveniently take on the challenge.
However, in this era of contactless, where non-face-to-face interaction has become mandatory, the best thing about mountaineering is that it can be done alone.
In fact, you can often see people 'mountaineering alone' on any mountain, but what is different from before is that you can easily see people in their 20s and 30s as well as those in their 50s and 60s.
People of all ages and genders are heading to the mountains to escape the frustration of social distancing.
Perhaps hiking is the most suitable exercise for these days when people are accustomed to doing things alone.
It's not strange to be alone in the mountains, and you don't have time to feel lonely because you're enjoying the leisure of being alone in the mountains.
Hiking is the perfect hobby for maintaining your health while practicing social distancing.
If you go without knowing, you will find yourself in the many faces of the mountain
In the mountains, what you see is not everything, and expectations often go wrong.
Therefore, confidence is taboo and one should not underestimate a low mountain.
Above all, there are many times when common sense about the season does not apply.
The climate changes rapidly, making it impossible to predict even an inch ahead, and even a slight difference in altitude can cause alternating between cold winds and gentle breezes.
In the mountains, the concepts of time and distance become like rubber bands depending on the situation.
There are times when the endless hell of descent unfolds, and there are times when the sun that was just up there sets in an instant, and in a place that seemed like the Garden of Eden, you end up taking pictures of your legendary hometown.
Even the slightest carelessness can easily lead to getting lost, and you may quickly lose your energy, regretting not bringing enough emergency food.
It is quite enjoyable to read the author's colorful episodes in the mountains, such as experiencing a fulfillment of all five senses amidst picturesque natural scenery, and then being left speechless by the unpredictable whims of nature.
The bottom line is that there are so many things that don't go as planned in the mountains, so you have to be thoroughly prepared.
Because mountains are a natural wonder that should never be underestimated.
A Guide to Hiking Rules for Beginners & Honest Advice from Experienced Hikers
In a mountain, those going up have priority over those coming down.
Don't play music loudly and no matter how happy you are, don't shout.
Because the wild animals are surprised.
The use of disposable items should be minimized as much as possible, smoking cessation is essential, and use of open flames should be limited to designated areas.
Anything you eat on the mountain tastes good, but you should never leave any leftover food or trash on the mountain.
The 'national rule' is to drink all the broth from the cup ramen or bring it in a water bottle.
It's great to have fun in the mountains, but the most important thing is to leave no trace.
These little things are the most basic of basics for mountaineers, but if you don't know them, they can cause inconvenience or hardship.
《Today, Hiking》 is full of useful information for beginner hikers, including things you absolutely need to know when hiking, essential gear, hiking fashion, and recommended famous mountains.
It is packed with honest mountain stories from three famous mountaineers on Instagram, including the author.
