The Future of Children on the Autism Spectrum: Learning from the Lives of Adults on the Autism Spectrum


This story, told from the perspective of a person with autism, goes beyond the common perspective of non-autistic people as a "problem" or "deficit," and delves deeper into the nature of the autism spectrum and the diversity it encompasses.
Author Jenna Gensik interviewed 12 people on the autism spectrum who were verbally expressive, interested in self-advocacy, and had diverse educational and professional backgrounds over a three-year period, through phone and email.
The honest voices gathered in this way are contained in this book.
Twelve people on the autism spectrum, including Lydia Brown, Alyssa Hillary, and Ben Katze, share their experiences and insights from their childhood to adulthood.
They emphasize that what children on the autism spectrum truly need above all else is not attempts to 'fix' them, but 'respect', 'understanding', and 'the power of self-advocacy'.

The book begins with the preface, “To understand more and help more,” and through each interview, it addresses various challenges that children on the autism spectrum face as they grow up, such as autistic identity, difficulties in school life, friendships and relationships, finding a job and working life, development and independence.
For example, Lydia Brown says we should stop trying to "fix" autistic people and instead teach them self-advocacy.
Amy Gravino talks about growing up and friendships during adolescence, and Shawna Hinkle highlights the role of parents in ensuring educational rights.
It's also full of insights into how small changes parents and teachers can make can make a huge difference in a child's life.

Each interview is followed by a reflection section with “Think About It” questions to help parents and teachers reflect on how they view their children and what they can do together.
At the end of the book, the book provides '33 Tips for Living Strongly as a Person with Autism' and 'Self-Advocacy Skills' to encourage children with autism spectrum disorders to live independent and dignified lives.

This book aims to dispel misconceptions and prejudices surrounding the autism spectrum and to respect the potential and dignity of people with autism.
