The IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C projects that if the global temperature rises by 2°C, 1.5 to 2.5 million km2 of permafrost will thaw by 1.5°C compared to a 1.5°C rise.11) The fact that permafrost contains a lot of carbon is a major problem.\u003cbr\u003e As permafrost melts, carbon is released into the atmosphere, which will further increase the Earth's temperature.
