A new work by Jo Yoon-je, the author of the 700,000 bestseller Oriental classic!
How to keep myself calm in a noisy world!

***** Appendix | Includes "Shindok's Notes" to cultivate inner strength in life

“To be sincere in one’s intentions means not to deceive oneself.
To hate evil as if one were to hate bad smells, and to love good as if one were to love beauty.
This is called being humble in one's own eyes.
Therefore, a gentleman must be careful when he is alone.”

This is the first passage in the book 『The Great Learning』, which is a book for adults to study, that mentions being careful and alone.
Not only in 『The Great Learning』, but also in many classics such as 『The Doctrine of the Mean』 and 『The Book of Songs』, ‘Shin Dok’ is emphasized.

Jo Yoon-je, a classical scholar who has received the love of 700,000 readers through his series ‘Dasan’s Last’ and ‘Study of Words,’ has returned with the keyword ‘Shin-dok.’
Shindok means 'being more careful not to go against moral principles when alone' and is considered the highest level of personal cultivation.
How you spend your alone time and what you fill that time with are the key to making a person complete.
The author carefully selects 70 famous passages from over 20 Eastern classics, including the Analects of Confucius, the Tao Te Ching, the Mencius, and the Great Learning, and explains them with interesting anecdotes and modern examples.
Through this book, I can learn how to protect myself, reflect, learn and grow, stop and take opportunities, and connect with people.
At the end of the book, a ‘Shindok manuscript note’ is included as an appendix to the book.
I hope you give yourself 30 minutes a day, late at night or early in the morning, to focus solely on yourself.

If you feel lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, if you need time to focus on the one thing that matters in life, if you need time to look deep into your heart, rest, and regroup, then I encourage you to open this book.
Through 2,000 years of Eastern classics, you will be able to learn the wisdom that will strengthen you.

Preface | Alone Time to Recover

Chapter 1.
The person I most admire is myself.
Shin Gi-dok-ya is careful and independent

Everyone has their own space.
The being closest to me and yet farthest from me is myself.
Pride is given when I become my own master.
To protect your heart, you must first watch over it.
Your present appearance is a mirror reflecting your present mind.
If you want to catch your wandering mind, stay for a while.
If you walk too fast, you'll miss the scenery.
Be silent as if you were sending me a fervent prayer.
Studying is thinking about every moment of your life.
If you accumulate small things each day with sincerity, you will reach greatness.

Chapter 2.
The more a person turns his head, the more he grows.
Ban-gu-jeo-gi (reverse seeking others)

You can only move forward if you can look back on the path you've taken.
If your surroundings are messy, look back and see if you are not messy.
The only thing that changes a person is reflection.
Don't say tomorrow will come if you don't look back on today.
Others are another me that reflects me.
When you are kind to yourself, you become ashamed of others.
Those who can bridge the gap between ideals and reality are strong.
When you are covered by the shadows of life, your own shadow becomes faint.
Not reading a book is like not being able to read a book.
Look back at yourself at least once a day

Chapter 3.
You have to realize yourself to love yourself.
Know yourself, know yourself, know yourself.

Today is a new day, emptying the weight of yesterday.
Because there is space, meaning can be filled in.
Wrinkles tell a story as deep as they are.
If your mind is centered, it will not collapse even if shaken.
Tigers don't hide in narrow caves.
Face me, break me, love me
Only those who love themselves can love others.
You have to walk slowly so as not to get lost.
A dusty mirror cannot reflect clearly.
Studying is an effort to return to the original learning.

Chapter 4.
Study as if you were engraving it on your body and sharpening your mind.
Procedural Takma

Grow like changing an old shell into a new one.
Start today, tame tomorrow, and reflect the day after tomorrow.
If you don't break yourself down every day, you'll break down in your daily life.
It takes countless footprints to make a path through the forest.
Studying is a journey to find the lost heart.
Do the most precious things at the most precious time.
To empty something, you must first fill it.
The reason we learn about the past is because we want the future to be new.
What you like and what you are good at are not different.
The greatest strength humans possess is the tenacity to move mountains.

Chapter 5.
The true meaning of words lies between the words.
Knowing the ability to stop

Only those who have faced death can be honest about life.
It takes more strength to stop than to keep going.
If you can immerse yourself like a child, you can become an adult.
Opportunity comes only to those who realize their potential.
A day is not a period, but a comma.
If you don't change yourself, you will be swayed by the changes in the world.
There are questions in life that adults find difficult to answer readily.
Too much deliberation is like a thoughtless decision.
Don't give up on yourself so that others won't give up on you.
To take the first step, you must first be able to stand on your own.

Chapter 6.
Be lonely until you miss yourself
Oh my friend

Even though we've been together our whole lives, he still keeps talking to me, a stranger.
Dating is not about space, but about narrowing the distance between hearts.
To judge a friend is to give up friendship.
A friend is someone who transforms you and me into us.
Even when you're next to me, I long for you, and even when you're far away, I long for you.
Friendship is leaving better than before you met.
If you don't have a friend who calls you by your name, you're as good as dead.
A true friend never owes you a debt you can't repay.
If your sincerity can be conveyed through words, there is no need to express it through words.
Even speaking frankly requires study.

Chapter 7.
I hear the path I must take from the heart that has passed.
Knowing one's destiny

After going through life's hardships, the voice of the heart opens.
A life untested is like a grave.
Look back on the past, prepare for the future, and live in the present.
It's not a candle, it's a candle that sways in the wind.
You have to get down to the ground to find out how high you can go.
Love your own destiny
To make a tree grow, you have to prune its branches.
If you can't stop being greedy, your anxiety won't stop either.
Fifty is a good time to question the meaning of life.
Finding the path that is given to you

Into the book
Dasan did not limit his teachings on being careful when alone to the concepts of space and time.
It is natural for a person who practices mindfulness to be tidy when alone. Rather, it is recommended that you reflect on whether you have done any harm or evil while interacting with others because they were unaware of it.
(…) Those in power at the time, who were busy with factional strife and vicious power struggles, eventually pushed Dasan out through exile.
They secretly hoped that Dasan would collapse from exhaustion from his long exile, but Dasan maintained his steadfastness throughout the difficult 18 years of exile.
And he completed the “Yeoyudangjeonseo” which consists of about 500 volumes.
A person of integrity will not break down under any circumstances.
--- From Chapter 1, “The Being I Respect Most Is Myself”

The stories Dasan left behind are a great inspiration to all book lovers.
“If you can carry a cartload of books in addition to your bedding and clothes, this is the conduct of an upright scholar.” This saying, recorded in the “Mokminsimseo,” talks about the desirable attire that one should have when first appointed as a local official.
He also sent letters to his children while in exile, urging them not to neglect reading books.
“There is only one way to behave well as a member of the clan: reading.
“If a child of the fallen family does not read and does not conduct himself properly, how can he be considered a human being?” “The only thing I pray and wish for day and night is that my second child will study hard.
“Please read diligently from early morning until late at night, and do not abandon this father’s earnest wish.” “If you truly do not want to read, the books I have written will be useless.
If my book is useless, I will be a useless person.
“Your reading is saving my life.” The two sons, Jeong Hak-yeon and Jeong Hak-yu, who were disciplined by their father’s earnest letter, were able to break free from the limitations of a fallen family and open their own paths as poets and government officials.

--- From "Chapter 2: People Grow as They Turn Their Heads"

Jasan and Shindoga, who were both prime ministers of the Jeong Dynasty, studied under Baekhonmuin, a teacher of the time.
Jasan, who was ashamed to study with Shindoga, who had his legs amputated as punishment, asks Shindoga to leave, criticizing him for thinking of studying with someone of such high status as himself when he is disabled.
Then the believer said:
“Many people will excuse themselves and say that they should not have been punished by having their feet cut off, but few will excuse themselves and say that they should not have had feet in the first place.
Only a virtuous person can realize that punishment is beyond human control, accept it as fate, and find peace of mind.
When a master archer shoots an arrow, if you are within that range, you are bound to get hit by the arrow.
If it doesn't fit, you're in luck.
(…) I have been with the Master for 19 years, but I did not know that I had no legs.
“You and I are in a relationship of heart, but you are only looking for me in appearance. How is that not wrong?” Hearing this, Jasan straightened his posture and said.
“Please, stop.”
--- From Chapter 3, “You must realize yourself to love yourself”

Lu Meng of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period of China was a general with sufficient qualifications, but his only flaw was his lack of scholarship.
Sun Quan, the emperor of Wu, told Lu Meng, who said he had no time to read, that he too was constantly reading books, and that “Emperor Guangwu of the Later Han Dynasty never let go of a book even on the battlefield at the border, and Cao Cao of Wei enjoyed learning even in his old age.”
Yeomong, who was greatly enlightened by the emperor's advice, always kept books close by and studied diligently even on the battlefield, thereby surprising Grand Admiral Lu Su, who usually looked down on him.
When Lu Su was discussing countermeasures against Guan Yu, the famous general of Shu, in the military camp, he was shocked to hear Lu Meng's five countermeasures.
Nosuk said to Yeomong, “I used to look down on you because you only had martial arts and military strategy, but now you have great learning, so you are not the Yeomong you used to be.”
To that, Yeomong replied, “A scholar should rub his eyes and look at each other again after three days of separation.”
After that, Yeomong became a brave warrior and a wise general, and succeeded Lu Su as the Grand Admiral of Wu.

--- From Chapter 4, “Study as if you were engraving it on your body and sharpening your mind”

Guan Zhong and Po Suk-ah are friends who grew up together and cared for each other since childhood.
They did business together and went to battle together, but each time, the crowd showed a cowardly side.
When Guan Zhong took more profit each time they did business together, Po Suk-ah would say, “Guan Zhong is poor, so it is natural for him to take more.”
When Guan Zhong fled several times on the battlefield, Po Suk-ah defended him, saying, “Guan Zhong is not a coward. It is natural for him to be cautious because he has to take care of his old mother.”
The highlight of their relationship was when they took different sides and fought against each other during a civil war in their country.
Guan Zhong sided with Gong Zi Gui, and Po Shuya sided with So Baek. When So Baek won, Guan Zhong was in danger of being executed.
However, Posuk-ah recommends Guan Zhong as a prime minister to So-baek and says this.
“If Your Majesty is satisfied with the king of my country, you may make me your prime minister.
But if you want to become the king of the world, make Guan Zhong your prime minister.” Guan Zhong said this about his friendship with Bao Shuya, who had saved him from death and recommended him as the prime minister of his state.
“My parents gave birth to me, but it was my father who understood me.”
--- From "Chapter 6: Be Lonely Until You Miss Yourself"

The life in exile, where he was rejected by everyone, must have been the loneliest and most difficult time in Dasan's life.
But at that moment, Dasan suddenly realized his calling.
“At this time, he quietly rejoiced, saying, ‘I have found leisure.’ He took with him three volumes of the “Sasangrye” and one volume of “Sangbok,” including annotations, and studied and investigated them meticulously, forgetting even sleep and eating.” Here, we can see when a person realizes the destiny of heaven.
Destiny comes like a flash in the loneliest and most difficult moments.
Once you realize your destiny, you must act immediately.
At that moment, Dasan began writing the first volume of the “Yeoyudangjeonseo,” researching it meticulously and completing it.
And I was happy to see the finished book.
It was precisely because of this attitude that Dasan was able to complete over 500 volumes of works.
--- From Chapter 7, “I Hear the Path I Must Take from the Heart That Has Passed”

Publisher's Review
Why did Dasan sweep the yard every morning?
Why did Toegye repeatedly decline official positions?
Why did Joseon's subjects demand 'sindok' even when the king was alone in his bedroom?

Among the words that Dasan, Toegye, Baekbeom, and Dosan took as their lifelong creed,
Learn the wisdom that makes you stronger

If we live each day as if we are being chased, we don't even have time to find answers to the questions, "How should I live my life?" or "What does it mean to live true to myself?"
But the faster the pace of life gets, the more I need time to look back at myself, face myself, and organize myself.
People who have accomplished great things in human history have all achieved great things by focusing on their own time alone.
Bill Gates' 'think week', Henry David Thoreau's two-year stay at Walden Pond, and Steve Jobs' trip to India are all great turning points that allowed them to achieve their goals through time spent alone.

『Shindok, the Power of Time Alone』 by Jo Yoon-je, a classic researcher beloved by South Korea, is a book that highlights 'Shindok' (愼獨), which points out the value of time alone, even among the numerous sentences of classics.
Shindok means “to be careful not to go against moral principles when alone,” and is considered the highest level of personal cultivation in Confucianism.
Since it was first mentioned as a virtue of self-cultivation in the Great Learning, it has been emphasized in numerous classics such as the Doctrine of the Mean and the Book of Songs.
Toegye Yi Hwang made Shindok his lifelong creed, Dasan Jeong Yak-yong also considered it important as a basic human attitude in his study of the mind, and Baekbeom Kim Gu and Dosan Ahn Chang-ho also made it their motto for self-discipline.

The author uses over 70 famous passages from the Analects, Tao Te Ching, Mencius, and the Great Learning to teach us how to protect ourselves, reflect on ourselves, stop and empty ourselves, learn anew, and grow, thus living a life of unwavering strength.
