Epilogue

Into the book
Studying was the last alternative I chose to change the course of my life, which was flowing in an unwanted direction.
And the experience of spending my time in high school deviantly living a life of debauchery, away from my duties as a student, scared me.
I knew that if I started to stray from what I was supposed to do, it would get worse and eventually reach a point where I couldn't control it, so I made up my mind from the beginning not to allow even an inch of room for it.
--- p.44~45

“Why did you try so hard to get into Seoul National University?” This was the question I was asked most often after I was accepted.
With grades like mine, couldn't I have gotten into a university that wasn't Seoul National University, where I wouldn't have to worry about tuition for four years? Furthermore, until 1994, it was difficult to get into Seoul National University just because of my grades, so why did I have to suffer for five years, ignoring my family's difficult circumstances?
Was I Really a Seoul National University Addict with a First-Class Disease? --- p.99

Can we truly explain and justify the differences in life—being rich or poor, being educated or not—by attributing them solely to a person's acquired efforts? I don't think so.
(…) Why do some students excel at studying from a young age and have the strong willpower to do so, while others have no interest in studying from the beginning?
How often do we lose track of time without even the opportunity to be stimulated? Could it be that a more fundamentally unequal "number of possibilities" is creating the disparate quality of life today? --- p. 155-156

When I first went to a construction site, I couldn't even last a day and had to struggle.
Now, I am confident that I can do the job just as well as anyone else at any construction site.
(…) Although it took five years, I gained confidence that I could study for the entrance exam better than anyone else, and this resulted in me being accepted to Seoul National University as the top student.
What does this mean? 'The more you use your mind and body, the stronger they become.' This is a conviction I've personally learned through my work and study over the past few years.
--- p.164

But going through that process, I learned that grades don't necessarily go up in direct proportion to the amount of study.
(…) Until the accumulated amount of studying reaches a certain level, no external results are revealed.
However, when the amount of study that has been continuously accumulating reaches a certain level, all that has been accumulated explodes out at once, resulting in clearly noticeable results.
Also, as your grades improve, the plateau period becomes longer, and the longer the plateau period, the greater the leap forward.
--- p.201~202

I am not a 'rare monopoly'.
I just had something I wanted to do and I focused on it.
I've hit my limits, been beaten, and fallen countless times, but I never thought that was the end.
At first, I hated myself for not having anything, but gradually, as I realized my 'potential', I regained my faith and affection for myself.
I hope that those who read this book will be able to see such possibilities inherent in their own lives.
No one should have to live a life they don't want to live.
We have the right to change ourselves, our destiny, our limitations.
And it has the power to do so.
_In the prologue

I just jumped in because I had nothing, and I clung to it because I didn't know how to do anything.

“You got into a place where others find it difficult to get in, but now your future is bright and bright.” “A male Cinderella who jumped from a day laborer to the top of the elite.” “I heard that the country’s top corporation offered you billions of won to scout you.” These are all stories Jang Seung-su heard from those around him after being accepted to Seoul National University.

However, Jang Seung-su was rather embarrassed by the reactions of those around him who linked his acceptance to Seoul National University as the top student to 'promotion' or 'success'.
He bluntly states that he is not a particularly ambitious person or a unique individual, but rather a late bloomer who took longer than others to get into college.
So why did you try so hard to get into Seoul National University, and how did you achieve that result?

I wanted to be good at my job, so I worked hard, and became the best 'worker' in the manual labor world. I wanted to be good at studying, so I studied hard, and became the top student admitted to Seoul National University.
'The more you use your mind and body, the stronger they become.' This is a conviction I have personally learned through my work and studies over the past few years.
_In the text

When he first went to a construction site, he couldn't even last a day and was left to fumble, but later on, he was able to work as well as anyone at any construction site.
When he first started preparing for the college entrance exam, he was thrilled to get a 200 on his first mock exam. However, after five years, he gained the confidence that he could study for the entrance exam better than anyone else, and finally achieved the result of being accepted to Seoul National University as the top student.
In this process, Jang Seung-su learned and became convinced that the human mind and body possess infinite possibilities and potential.

He says that most people can achieve these things.
Anyone can train their strengths to expand their abilities and break through their limits.
It may be difficult at first, but as your skills build, you will be able to tackle more challenging and complex tasks.
Therefore, when he says that 'studying was easy', it is not simply a fact that he learned while studying, but a result that he 'obtained' by dedicating himself to studying.

Jang Seung-su's life story: from a high school fighter to a day laborer to a top student at Seoul National University.

He was a fighter in high school.
Because of my poor family circumstances, I never even dreamed of going to college, and since I didn't study, I naturally ended up going down a different path.
During the summer of my third year of high school, I learned excavator skills just to avoid boring supplementary classes and self-study.
After graduation, he worked as an arcade attendant, newspaper deliveryman, and towel deliveryman.
One day, while spending every night drinking with friends and racing down the street on his motorcycle, he suddenly began to doubt his present and future.
After much thought, I chose 'studying' as the last alternative to correct my life that was going in an unwanted direction.
It was a year after I graduated from high school.
In my first year as a student, I applied to the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy at Korea University, but was rejected.
As the de facto breadwinner for his single mother, he started working as a day laborer and gas deliveryman to pay for his younger brother's tuition.
After earning money by May, I went back to school.
That year, he received 328 out of 340 points on the college entrance exam and applied to the Department of Political Science at Seoul National University, but was rejected again.
This time, after working at a landscaping construction site, he started studying again and applied to Seoul National University's law school, but was rejected again.
His low high school grades were always a problem for him.
After falling three times, I was exhausted both physically and mentally.
In 1994, I gave up on taking the exam and just worked at a construction site.
Since 1995, the college entrance exam system has been changed so that students who have graduated from high school five years ago can use their CSAT scores to replace their school grades.
For him, who was bound by the original sin of his body, it was news of salvation.
I tried again, and finally, in January 1996, I was accepted to the humanities department of Seoul National University with the highest score, taking first place for the first time in my life.
And now, having graduated from the Department of Law, he passed the 45th Bar Examination in 2003 and is pursuing a career in the legal profession.
