Dasan's last habit
Description
Book Introduction
"Dasan's Last Habit" is an old book of advice I've prepared to spread and lean on when the doubt that I've become hardened and empty turns into depression.
Jo Yoon-je, author of 『Dasan's Last Study』 and 『Millennium of Internal Strength』, has selected 57 key passages from 『Sohak』, the study that Dasan began anew after emptying his mind of 60 years of internal strength at the end of his studies, and has interpreted them to suit today's sensibilities.

Introduction: Dasan refined his conduct with the "Elementary Learning"
(Establishing a teaching) Learning is a daily pursuit, and learning is never ending.
The end of studying is returning to daily life.
I too become someone's teacher
Music is the future we tell our children.
There is no distance between good thoughts and good actions.
Hurry up and move on before the devil takes over.
All the little things in everyday life are my teachers.
Don't study to become a person, become a person first.
Art is saying what cannot be said in words.
A man is proved by his attitude, not by his knowledge.
(明倫) Self-conqueror is the strong one. Etiquette is the attitude of overcoming oneself, not others.
If you want to change the world, start by organizing your desk.
Be sincere to those closest to you
Courage is embracing even the cowardice of life.
Living is heavier and scarier than death.
A person will give his life to someone who respects him.
Persuasion begins with persuading yourself.
Everyone faces life's tests every day.
A friend is someone who looks at the same place from the same position.
Words must spring from the footsteps of those who have passed.
The way to have good friends is to first be a good friend.
Good medicine loses its effectiveness with repeated use.
Friends are rare, and lasting friendship is even rarer.
The more familiar you are with someone, the more polite you need to be.
To become an adult, you must distinguish between what you should do and what you can do.
(Respect for the body) An unwavering mind comes from a strong body.
Don't bother trying to fill it up
You must respect yourself to conquer yourself.
If you want to strengthen your body, start by strengthening your speech.
Studying without thinking is useless, and thinking without studying is dangerous.
Don't be intoxicated by your own intoxication with learning; be intoxicated by learning itself.
Criticize for the future, not for the past.
Words are enough to convey the meaning properly.
Every time a person looks back, he becomes an adult.
The beast shows its teeth and laughs at the person studying.
Don't give up on yourself to live like others.
(Gyego) The strong bow their heads to show their true colors.
If you have one wish, choose one person and stand next to him.
What a child sees now will be etched into his or her lifelong memories.
A disciple can become a child, but a child cannot become a disciple.
Teaching is not about telling, it is about showing.
Everyone walks through hell, so be generous to others.
The quickest shortcut is not to look for a shortcut.
Words come from one person's mouth and enter a thousand ears.
At a crossroads, don't hesitate or rush.
Legacy isn't something you pass on, it's something you help find.

As adults, we must guide children to become adults.
Art conveys the human heart, something knowledge misses.
To judge another's character, you must first consider your own.
Evil wears the mask of 'ordinariness' and 'triviality'
To protect your heart, you must acknowledge your wavering mind.

Learning flows from the bottom to the top.
Because it is slow, the direction is clear, and because it is heavy, the footprints are deep.
If you are kind to yourself, you will be ashamed of everyone.
Only by enduring the passage of time and weathering the wind and rain can one accumulate a tree.
Brothers are different ages, so the word "friendship" is new.

Small mind and body
The first principle of demonstration is to be timid and timid, and not to be harmed.
These words of Dasan speak of external strictness.
The teaching is that if you are well-prepared on the inside, it should be able to show on the outside.
A person who has deep self-cultivation but cannot express it appears rough.
But a person who is flashy on the outside but not well-prepared on the inside ends up deceiving even his own life.
A person can be called a mature adult only when his or her inside and outside are well-matched.
Just as the appearance of a gentleman is not something that can be achieved through decoration, Dasan's words to his sons are not teachings to decorate their appearance.
This is the natural behavior of a person who knows that their life is a learning experience and that everyday life is a learning experience.
If you want to achieve something, it must be based on daily faithfulness.
If these things accumulate and pile up, they can create results that are difficult to imagine.
When ordinary daily life accumulates and becomes extraordinary, we say, 'Great.'

Wake up in the morning, shake off the annoyance, and make the bed.
It was a small thing, but it got me going from the start of the day.
If you win the first time, you will win the second time, and as you gain experience in winning, beating yourself becomes a habit.
If you look back at the small details and find solutions, your chances of overcoming difficulties will greatly increase.
The starting point is to simplify your life, stop doing what is wrong, and do your best in the daily routine given to you.
As Confucius said, any lofty ideal must begin from the ground.
It would be ridiculous for a person whose entire family is immoral to cry out for social justice.
No matter how high your ideals are, they begin with you standing on the ground in reality.
And it is a daily life that you create.
Nothing can be accepted unless it is proven in everyday life.

Confucius's foreign affairs, his love and sorrow, his friends, his family, his hometown, his hometown, his hometown, his hometown, his hometown, his hometown, his hometown, China, etc. The story of the great man
Confucius's Confucianism is pure and innocent, and the person who cannot speak is the one who cannot speak. The person who cannot speak is the one who cannot speak. The person who cannot speak is the one who cannot speak.
We often envy the ability to express our opinions as freely as water.
However, speaking in a showy manner, using a lot of miscellaneous knowledge and technical terms, cannot be considered true speaking ability.
The same goes for using complicated expressions or mixing foreign words in your speech.
To these people, Confucius taught, “Words are enough to convey meaning (辭達而已矣).”
It is a pity that words have been decorated but their meaning has been lost.
If you speak when you should, refrain when you shouldn't, and speak sincerely without hiding anything, that's enough.
The same goes for behavior.
You must act confidently, knowing when to step forward and when not to.
But above all, there is something that must be protected.
Whether in words or actions, respect for others must be the foundation.
---From “Words are enough if they convey the meaning properly”
Do you think about it? Do you think about it? Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.
Zengzi said, "The octopus is not capable of anything, it is a octopus of the same species, and it is a medicinal herb. It is a real medicine. It is a Buddhist stone. It is a five-character, five-sang, and five-faced monk. It is a royal inspector."
As humans, we all have shortcomings and limitations, and we cannot be exceptions to this.
A great person recognizes his own limitations as well as those of others.
However, people who are obsessed with blaming others for their mistakes often fail to see their own shortcomings.
“A gentleman develops others’ strengths and prevents their weaknesses,” is written in the Analects of Confucius.
As the saying goes, “The small person does the opposite.”
The answer to interpersonal relationships that Dasan talks about is the same.
I taught my two sons that they must be able to give first.
“If you expect others to approach you first, it is because your arrogance has not yet been eliminated.” This is a criticism that the desire to hold others to strict standards that you cannot apply to yourself is a sign of a lack of self-cultivation.
He who would embrace today must be able to embrace yesterday's mistakes.

Water is evil, water is good, water is bad
When Jang Goae was the magistrate of Sungyang County, he caught the warehouse keeper stealing a penny.
When Jang Go-ae punished the warehouse keeper with a beating, the warehouse keeper complained, “How can you beat me for a mere coin?”
Then Jang Goae said, “One penny a day becomes a thousand penny in a thousand days.
He was punished, saying, “Just as a rope can cut a tree, and water can wear away a stone.”
In 『Sohakjieon』, Dasan also revealed the source of the warning that “one should not do evil because it is small, and one should not not do good because it is small”, saying that it came from the “Gyesajeon” of the 『I Ching』.
When faced with minor evils in everyday life, it is not easy to remember the obvious principle of 'be a good person!'
Evil is so easy and common.
But villains don't just appear one day.

Publisher's Review
Now that I've poured everything out,
What will fill me again?
Dasan gave up studying for sixty years
The last book I read to fill in the blanks from the beginning, 『Elementary Learning』
My foundation that I can look back on when I stop.
Adulthood, something I encountered at the beginning of my studies but forgot as I lived.
Going back to the basics, 『Elementary Learning』.
When we realize that where we are now is the pinnacle of life, we feel more anxious than fulfilled.
Because I feel like I'm slowly going downhill in life as I repeat the daily routines that have become familiar and habitual.
The trendy expressions “stagnant water” and “latte” are based on this fear of stagnation.
The basics of adulthood that Dasan first learned,
And the book 『Elementary Learning』 that I found again at the peak
『Elementary Learning』 is a textbook for beginners of Confucianism.
Zhu Xi's disciple, Liu Zijing, selected passages from various classics on how to live daily life, how to treat others, and how to cultivate oneself.
In Joseon Seodang, it was taught after 『Dongmong Seonseup』 and 『Myeongsim Bogam』.
It can be said that it completed the introductory stage before entering the Four Books and Five Classics and played a role in connecting the basics and advanced levels.
Dasan Jeong Yak-yong also emphasized 『Sohak』.
In his later years, he gave up all his studies, leaving behind only the 『Elementary Learning』 and the 『Heart Sutra』.
The two books are the result of selecting good passages from the Four Books and Five Classics, and have in common that they were required reading for the scholar-officials, but their orientations are diametrically opposed.
While 『Heart Sutra』 compiled profound passages that examine the mind from the highest level of Confucianism, 『Sohak』 emphasizes self-cultivation that can be practiced in daily life and the conduct one should have when dealing with others after taking root in the lowest level.
If you combine the core of 『Heart Sutra』 and 『Elementary Learning』, you get self-discipline and virtue.
It is about putting the mind you have governed into practice through action.
Growing up like an adult,
Why did Dasan look back at the beginning?
There comes a time when everyone looks back on their life.
Jeong Yak-yong, who returned home after his exile, was also like that.
He lost everything in an instant, fell down, and realized that the whole world had turned its back on him.
During his nearly 20 years of confinement, his knowledge deepened, but he was denied the opportunity to share it, and he was unable to find disciples to pass it on to.
But Jeong Yak-yong was not disappointed.
Rather than denying a life filled with regret and longing, he willingly embraced it, and instead of settling for the level he had reached through his lifelong dedication to study, he willingly laid aside the knowledge he had accumulated over sixty years in order to move beyond it.
It is like emptying a whole box of internal energy to fill it again.
This is why Jeong Yak-yong chose 『Sohak』 along with 『Simgyeong』 at the end.
The core of study that he realized in 『Elementary Learning』 is to return to the basics.
Among the Confucian classics, 『Elementary Learning』 is the easiest and at the same time the most difficult, as it reminds us of the obvious truths that everyone knows but has not dared to put into practice in life.
『Dasan's Last Habit』 is a deep taste of the classics, based on 『Elementary Learning』, and explained by classical scholar Jo Yun-je.
Specifically, we selected 57 famous quotes from 『Elementary Learning』 that are worth repeating, extracted the core, and reinterpreted them to fit the current sensibility.
Going back to basics,
The last habit of emptying myself to find myself
In 『Elementary Learning』, growth is so natural that it is a habit of retrieving the lost teachings while living and cultivating the attitude of living each day to the fullest. In order to develop such a habit, one must empty out all the habits that have been ingrained in one's body and return to the beginning.
So, among the core teachings of 『Elementary Learning』 selected in this book, the most representative one is the emphasis on trivial matters such as organization and greetings.
The small habits we must practice every day are also the most difficult teachings.
So, when Dasan reached his 60th birthday and completed his study of the mind with the 『Simgyeong』, the next step was to do his best in each and every little moment of daily life.
Dasan finally applied the teachings he had learned as a child, which he had forgotten, to his life.
When I woke up at dawn, I would sweep the yard and look into my own heart.
As the 『Elementary Learning』 recommended, I reread the writings I had put down a long time ago and devoted myself to writing to the point of burning a hole in my ankle three times.
Emptying out all the habits that had shaped him and forming a single new habit that he would maintain for the rest of his life was the way Dasan chose to renew himself every day and grow throughout his life.
Living like Dasan,
How to Live Like an Adult in a Rude World
The complex and arduous process of empathizing and being empathized has long been abandoned, and pretending to persuade and being persuaded has become our survival strategy.
A 'human who cannot empathize with humans' is not a distant person, but a monster that anyone can encounter when they become an adult who has forgotten the obvious lessons they learned as a child.
In this rude world, the teachings of Dasan's "Elementary Learning," which he looked into until the very end and which call us back to the beginning, will serve as an opportunity for those who suddenly wonder if they too have become rigid and hardened people to reflect on themselves.
What will fill me again?
