Into the book
People who are world leaders in their fields are not born with a genuine love for their work.
Everyone sheds countless tears, feels like giving up, feels lost, and wanders during the harsh training at first.
When you overcome these barriers and give up everything else in life and dedicate yourself solely to it, when you feel that it is your life, you become strongly attached to your work.
The process of your efforts feels like conceiving a child, and the result feels like an extension of yourself.
Only then does one begin to feel that one's work is precious and even sacred.
A sense of calling for one's work is formed through this very process.
In this way, ‘something you truly love’ is something you create through your own efforts.
Immersion is an effective way to make yourself love your work.
--- p.40

For example, let's say I've been immersed in a problem for a week.
If you spent a week thinking about a problem, waking and sleeping, and reading only related literature to solve it, how much time would it take? You'd spend at least 15 hours a day thinking about it.
After a week like that, it will be over 100 hours.
Even if you focus on it for just one week, the time it takes to create a goal-oriented mindset to solve a given problem is equivalent to the time it takes to form a wish in childhood.
So what happens if you practice immersion for months, not just a week? If you keep thinking about a problem for months, your mind will be completely occupied by it.
And everyday memories are quickly forgotten and become vague.
When something disappears from memory, interest also disappears.
When this happens, it becomes 'the reason I live in this world is to solve that problem.'
It is where the greatest hope and passion a person can have is created.
--- p.95

Since we typically only get one chance to go to bed each day, we only have 20 to 30 minutes to release positive chemicals before we fall asleep.
But when we sit back, relax, and do slow thinking, our brains are tricked into thinking that we are preparing for sleep.
So, neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melatonin, and GABA are secreted, which create a peaceful feeling.
Ultimately, slow thinking can be seen as having the effect of artificially increasing the time during which these positive chemicals are secreted.
Therefore, it is natural that concentration improves, insomnia is reduced, stress is relieved, and feelings of happiness are induced.
I think the positive effects of meditation are likely for similar reasons.
Because the positive chemicals released before falling asleep and the positive chemicals released during meditation are almost identical.
--- p.119

Our brain only focuses on what it has set as its goal.
To convey the importance of that goal to your brain, you must think about it repeatedly with a serious mind.
No matter how dire the situation, if we don't think about solving the problem as our goal, our brain's goal-oriented mechanisms won't work, so it won't be effective.
Worrying doesn't solve problems; thinking solves problems.
When the internal importance of solving a given problem increases, our brain actively works toward solving the problem.
This is the essence of brain power.
The effect is even greater when you try to keep your thoughts flowing.
If you think about it enough, your heightened creativity and highly activated long-term memory retrieval ability while you're asleep will come into play, and you'll come up with ingenious ideas that you wouldn't normally have thought of.
The principle of idea generation is this simple.
Once you understand this principle, you will know how to use your brain to generate ideas.
--- p.180

To become absorbed in something is to go into a state of concentration, against the tendency of consciousness to become distracted.
That is, it is going in the direction of decreasing the entropy of consciousness, countering its tendency to increase.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said, “As immersion increases, the entropy of consciousness decreases.”
But things like this never happen on their own.
Focusing your thoughts on one problem is like trying to gather scattered cigarette smoke into a small space.
It is not easy to collect the scattered cigarette smoke in a narrow space, and this can be called an entropy barrier.
The reason immersion is difficult is because it requires overcoming this barrier of entropy.
A distracted state with low immersion can be described as a state in which various synapses are randomly activated.
At this time, random thoughts come to mind.
On the other hand, a state of high immersion is a state in which neurons and synapses with special relationships are selectively activated.
Therefore, to understand immersion, we must understand the workings of our body's neurons and synapses.
A life that exerts and expands the limits of one's abilities is a life that embodies the state with the lowest entropy or the state with the lowest probability.
--- p.257

Our lives depend on what content our consciousness is filled with.
Therefore, controlling consciousness means controlling life, controlling happiness.
Uncontrolled consciousness is filled with unnecessary thoughts.
This is a natural phenomenon according to the law of increasing entropy.
But if you don't control your consciousness, you will live a life driven by instinct.
If that happens, you won't be able to lead a proactive life, and your life will naturally go in an unintended direction.
When we fill our consciousness with necessary thoughts, the associated synapses are formed and activated, and the associated drive is created.
Therefore, the ability to control consciousness can also be said to be the ability to create driving force at will.
Through my will and effort, I can create the life I want, a happy and meaningful life.
To control consciousness, it is good to use intentional immersion.
Because immersion can amplify the inner importance of what you want.

Publisher's Review
The creator of 『Immersion』, which has captivated 1 million readers in Korea
An upgraded version of the 'Immersion Roadmap' by immersion expert Professor Hwang Nong-moon of Seoul National University!

Professor Hwang Nong-moon of Seoul National University, Korea's leading immersion expert, has released "Immersion, the Second Story" following his best-selling book "Immersion."
After publishing "Immersion," which introduced his personal experience, the author heard various stories of immersion experiences from others and wrote this book, believing that it needed to be systematized so that more people could utilize immersion.
This book upgrades the previous work by presenting a variety of examples and practical applications of immersion, and by presenting scientific evidence to further enhance its appeal to a wider range of people, including students, office workers, housewives, and CEOs.
In particular, the appendix at the end of the book reveals examples of industrial problem-solving and the author's own great achievements through actual immersion, thereby deepening the understanding of immersion and suggesting useful brain utilization methods for those working in business or academia.

In this book, the author reveals that while he experienced immersion while searching for answers to important questions in life, he found clearer answers through the enlightenment he gained during immersion. He poses meaningful questions that add depth to life, such as how to live a life without regrets, how to live a life that gives 100% of one's abilities, and how to live a life where one enjoys one's work.
And by proving one by one that all the answers to these questions are hidden within 'immersion', it motivates immersion.
As you seek answers to the questions posed in this book, understand why you need to immerse yourself, and learn the principles of immersion, you will discover a path that will dramatically improve your life.

This book answers all your questions about immersion more clearly than its predecessor, such as why miraculous ideas pour out and a sense of joy arises in a state of immersion, how students and workers who are pressed for time can use immersion to improve their learning and work efficiency, and how to maintain interpersonal relationships while immersed, helping you take one step closer to a happy life.
If "Immersion" awakened your hidden potential and taught you the know-how to change your life, then "Immersion, the Second Story" will teach you the know-how to overcome your limitations and enhance the perfection of your life.

As long as we immerse ourselves, there are no limits.
The author emphasizes that there is no problem that cannot be solved if anyone understands and practices the principle of immersion, and argues that we should live a life where we challenge our limitations, overcome them, and expand our boundaries through immersion.
Professor Hwang Nong-moon, who confidently says that he has lived his best life, a life without any regrets, by immersing himself, tells the stories of people who have experienced success through immersion and those who have seen the effects of immersion through immersion guidance cases, showing that anyone can achieve the best state of immersion through deliberate effort.

According to the author, when we try to solve easy problems where the answer is obvious from the beginning, our brains only work at 10 to 20 percent.
It is said that as the problem becomes more difficult, the brain activity rate increases to 40-50 percent and 80-90 percent.
In this section, the author emphasizes that in order to fully utilize one's abilities, the difficulty of the given problem must exceed one's ability.
In other words, it is said that not giving up and continuing to think about solving a problem even when the answer is not visible is the way to use 100% of your ability and overcome the limits of your ability.
It is said that in order to immerse oneself in something, it is most important to secure uninterrupted time without being interrupted by anything else.
For a continuous 60 minutes, you can increase your level of immersion, so you can do meaningful and rare work at a high level, but for a time that is broken down into small chunks of 10 or 20 minutes, you cannot increase your level of immersion, so you can only do simple work.
This book also presents specific immersion methods that can be practiced not only by those engaged in business or research, but also by students and office workers who spend a lot of time at school or work.
First, it is said that students can get bored if they study moderately, but if they continue to study while walking, washing their face, or even in the bathroom, they will actually feel more positive and have higher efficiency.
However, he emphasizes that in order to maintain a high level of immersion, you must never overwork yourself, either physically or mentally.
To achieve this, it is important to get enough sleep, have a comfortable posture and mindset, and it is said that the most effective method is to think while moving.
For office workers, it is advised to use spare time to think about work frequently.
Here, dead time refers to the time between lunch and the start of work, the time spent drinking coffee or using the bathroom while working, the time spent driving, taking the bus, subway, or walking to and from work, the time spent washing up or showering at home, and the time between going to bed and falling asleep.

This book presents a concrete roadmap for practicing immersion that makes it easier to immerse yourself, helping you develop problem-solving skills and the ability to enjoy the tasks before you.
Ultimately, this book presents a roadmap for life success that maximizes self-realization by actively challenging one's own limits and gradually expanding those limits while fostering the power of self-denial.

A rich, immersive science story not included in the previous work.
Immersion is clearly a change that occurs in the brain, and there is a scientific principle behind it.
Throughout this book, Professor Hwang Nong-moon explains the principles of immersion through brain science and the law of entropy.
For example, the role of GABA, which reduces distracting thoughts in the early stages of immersion, acetylcholine, which retrieves long-term memories related to problem solving in the middle of immersion, the role of dopamine, which sustains the thread of thought in a state of immersion and provides the pleasure of immersion, and the role of the hippocampus, which changes the prejudice of those who consider napping during the day to be lazy, incompetent, and irresponsible, etc., show that the disappearance of distracting thoughts, improvement in problem solving ability, and feeling of pleasure through immersion are not simple autosuggestion, but are achieved according to the principles of brain science.
Another reason why it is difficult to become immersed is because the entropy of consciousness decreases. This is a completely natural phenomenon, and he emphasizes that anyone can increase entropy and become immersed if they make an effort.

They say that you must set a goal before immersing yourself.
From a brain science perspective, if you set a goal and work hard, synapses are formed in a direction that allows you to achieve that goal, and your consciousness develops in the desired direction.
For example, a baby falls countless times while learning to walk, but they do not give up and keep trying toward their goal of standing and walking like adults. It is said that in this process, synapses that will successfully lead to the achievement of this goal are actively formed.
In addition, it provides an interesting and rich story of brain science that was not covered in the previous work, allowing readers to realize the immersive effect that can be applied in any situation, transcending time and space.
