“All women are daughters.
“Writing about daughters is like writing about all women.” For Dr. Jin-ae Kim, the existence of a ‘daughter’ goes beyond mere biological meaning.
"About Daughters" begins with the daughters and granddaughters of real family, but it encompasses all generations of women who continue and surpass the lives of previous generations.
In fact, we are all born and live on someone's legacy.
If we feel more affectionate toward our daughters, it is because we foresee that they, who are our future itself, will be thrown into a world that is far more complex and dangerous than the one we have now.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae calls out the "here and now" and the "future" in the name of "daughters," and goes beyond mere rhetoric to inspire everyone to dream of a truly better future, empowering them to protect and pioneer their own lives and world.
A daughter is not just something that is created, but something that must be built upon.
Not only must we creatively build the space for our own lives, but we must also create a world that will be passed on to our daughters' daughters.
Dr. Jin-ae Kim, who has lived a life broader and deeper than anyone else as an architect, politician, writer, and woman, has devoted her life to the work of "building"—writing over 30 books and even our cities and society.
"About Daughters" is a book like a legacy, imparting all the insights and specific wisdom accumulated by someone who has lived through an era to "all the daughters of the world" who will build their own lives in the future.
As I wrote in the prologue, I hope that “this book will be a source of strength to all women who were born daughters, women who are struggling with the role of mothers to their daughters, and fathers who hesitate while lovingly looking at their growing and grown daughters.”

Into the book
If disappearance is the fear of death, loneliness is the pain of life.
Humans are constantly tormented by the loneliness that exists and the fear of disappearing.
As it is my destiny, so is it your destiny, and the destiny of all mankind.
How can we live in this fate? How can we overcome loneliness and fear?
--- p.38-39, Chapter 1.
From “A Hundred Years of Life”
Anyone would have that temptation.
I'm talking about a temptation that has a strong attraction to you, even if others don't know about it.
The more outlandish the better, maybe.
For example, something like this.
There are people who are tempted to grow the world's largest pumpkin, and for this purpose, they do all kinds of things such as researching soil, seeds, varieties, and fertilizers.
Wouldn't the world become less clichéd and more interesting the more people have their own good temptations?
--- p.58, Chapter 2.
From “Temptation and Desire”
Smile.
You have to know how to smile.
And do some funny exercises too.
You should know how to make others laugh, and you should not be shy about being the subject of laughter yourself.
Turn your failure stories into a source of humor.
As you revisit your failures, reflect on your thoughts, judgments, and final decisions in key situations and turn them into a story.
If you hold grudges over your failures, resent them, blame yourself with regret, and blame others, you will never be able to overcome them.
Don't be afraid to fall into a swamp of ill feelings.
When you laugh about your failures, you become more generous and relaxed.
--- p.91-92, Chapter 3.
From “Failure and Success”
There are moments like that in life.
It's a moment when it feels like all the burdens are lifted off.
Many people experience such moments when they encounter religion, but I have experienced such moments when I encountered knowledge, especially science.
This is how liberating it is, the world is truly mysterious, the laws of nature are truly intricate, it's so much fun to learn the secrets of the world, I felt like I could fly.
--- p.102, Chapter 4.
Among the humanities, science and engineering, and miscellaneous knowledge
When you see an actor who's good at acting, you no longer see their beauty, right? When you see a singer who's good at singing, you no longer feel tempted by their looks, right? We should aim for that too.
Let's hone our true skills until our looks are no longer visible.
I used to feel relieved when I saw that side of the actor.
The actors I liked weren't all handsome, but they all shone.
--- p.124, Chapter 5.
From “Appearance and Character”
I try to think of adjectives for every person I meet.
I think it's curiosity about people and sincerity towards them.
I don't want to dismiss it with insincere remarks like, 'He's a good person, he's a nice person!'
As I made it a habit to observe usefulness and charm, my eye for people definitely improved.
--- p.157, Chapter 6.
From “Usefulness and Charm”
It doesn't matter who you are.
Let's have fun doing what we love.
Let's admit that there are things that other people don't like.
It's more exciting when other people like it
Let's encourage each other.
Let's not be swayed by the stereotypes that women should be like this and men should be like this.
Life becomes much more fun when you have more choices and when you break free from stereotypes, the sense of liberation increases.
--- p.178-179, Chapter 7.
Among the "Positivity"
I thought a lot about what kind of environment would allow me to say I had fun today.
Because there aren't many days when these words come out naturally.
It's hard for a day like that to happen when you work alone.
The feeling of having fun can only be felt when you mix with people.
But we usually work with people, but it's rare that we have days when we feel like we've had a good time.
Why is that?
--- p.196, Chapter 8.
From "Partners and Rivals"
The power to listen, the power to tell stories, is the greatest power a human being can have, the power to play together.
Playing together is the best service people can give to each other.
The power to talk, listen, and play together is the greatest power we should strive for.
--- p.238, Chapter 9.
From "Social Sister and Social Brother"
What did sadness leave him with?
In the process of talking like that, empathy grows and it becomes a sadness that is not just your own but can be shared with a larger group of people.
When you share your sorrow with us, we grow bigger, and in that way sorrow can become the beginning of a new birth.
--- p.264, Chapter 10.
From "Anger and Tears"
Politics is hope for change.
This is my primary definition of politics.
The essence of politics is to never lose hope for positive change.
Politics is defined as the most effective, if not the only, force for bringing about positive change in the world.
I keep thinking about what a 'good change' is.
I keep thinking about how my good and the good of society can go together.
--- p.292, Chapter 11.
From “Politics and Power”
Just as I worry about your future now and bless you to enjoy a hundred years of life, you too will worry about the future of your granddaughters and daughters and bless them to enjoy another hundred years of life.
It is a miracle to continue living and going about one's daily life.
Humans are constantly tormented by the loneliness that exists and the fear of disappearing.

Publisher's Review
▶ Kim Jin-ae's life guide, written nearly 10 years after the bestsellers "Read It Once" and "Women's Reading"
* How can I design my own life in a changing world and in the changing lives of women?
* In these times of chaos and conflict, when we cannot see the future, what kind of adult voice do we need?
* What is the attitude to live one's life to the fullest without fear, even if it means bumping into things and breaking things?
* How is a world possible where we move beyond discrimination and toward friendship, where no one gives up on their daughter?
“Live brightly!
In this dangerous and 'unexpectedly' wonderful world"
─As an architect, politician, writer, and woman
The firm words of someone who has boldly designed his own life.
Dr. Jin-ae Kim, known for her cool, logical, straightforward, and spirited personality, surprisingly(?) has only two daughters (and each of her daughters has a daughter of her own).
In Dr. Kim Jin-ae's life, stories about her 'daughters' are constantly coming from very close quarters.
That's why we can deliver a more heartfelt message about life to the next generation of women who will usher in a new era.
The era of women or daughters is one of the topics facing our society today.
The era of viewing women's lives as merely objects of 'protection' or 'support' is over.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae's daughters, as well as young women of our time, find such gazes extremely uncomfortable.
This is a generational change.
And a politics and society that fails to reflect these changes will inevitably fall behind.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae, as a member of the older generation, felt a sense of responsibility and wrote this book, “On Daughters,” for all women who will live in the next generation.
What kind of world will my daughters create?
And how will the structure passed down by the older generation affect it? Can it not be improved?
How do we grow through challenges and failures? How do we share anger and sorrow? What kind of society will our daughters overcome the traps of conflict, discrimination, and hatred? How will the political engagement of our daughters' generation advance democracy in South Korea? The person who can most acutely address these questions is Dr. Kim Jin-ae.
“Open the door yourself and walk out the door!
“Life will become bigger and the world will become wider.”
─Going into a bigger world
12 Life Skills to Pass on to the Next Generation
"About Daughters" is also the first book written by Dr. Jin-ae Kim in colloquial language, as if confessing her innermost thoughts.
Borrowing the format of telling a story to my two granddaughters, I included words of advice for all women living in this era and the next.
He writes about his personal experiences with the people and society he encounters on his life's journey, but never romanticizes or is too hasty in his writing.
As an architect and a politician, you can clearly feel the inner strength that has always been gained by going deep into the field and the streets.
This is also the first book written for women in nearly 10 years since 『Women's Reading』(2017, Dasan Books).
The more women's stories are discovered and recorded, the more they will be able to navigate life's greater waves.
In that sense, this book is a source of comfort and courage for all the women in this world who were destined to be born as daughters.
The author explores the topics that make life difficult and challenging, and sometimes 'surprisingly' wonderful, such as desire, work, study, sex, relationships, and politics that lie between life and death. As a visionary of the times, he imparts wisdom that will help future generations overcome the oppression and stereotypes that lie ahead.
According to Dr. Kim Jin-ae, “you have to open the door yourself” to a greater life.
Because no one can do it for you.
So, he encourages us to “use the power within us to our heart’s content” and that the more we use our power, the greater it becomes.
The book conveys twelve powers: the power to survive with loneliness and fear, the power to live with anxiety, the power to laugh about failure, the power of philosophy and art, the power to praise yourself, the power to discover charm and usefulness, the power to move beyond androgyny, the power to work as a team player, the power to wear various hats and play together, the power to talk about sadness, the power of hope for change, and the power to continue the joy of first experiences.
Armed with this power, as we fight, endure, and laugh our way through life's twelve gates, we can become more intelligent, diverse, and "wonderful" people and advance into a greater world.
* Uncertain times, a crisis of safety
As technology advances, unpredictable events are recurring, including COVID-19, the Sewol ferry sinking, the Itaewon disaster, the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and deadly heat waves and torrential rains.
Amidst new crimes, unpredictable disasters, and signs of social distrust, the safety of future generations is increasingly threatened.
With what mindset should we live in these dangerous times?
Going forward, what kind of social safety net and civic awareness should we design?
As an urban expert, Dr. Jin-ae Kim's perspective is refreshing.
* The Wisdom of Vanity and Inadequacy in the SNS Age
The death of a writer who became famous through a false resume shows the obsession with the "glamorous self" created by social media and its dark side.
In this age of super vanity, where it's harder to hide than to reveal, we hear Dr. Jin-ae Kim's thoughts on how to live a healthy and wise life while enjoying the little things.
It helps the younger generation realize that even 'deficiency' is an important part of life and offers fundamental wisdom to foster healthy self-esteem.
* Three things a woman must do in her life: Start a business, run for office, and lose.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae lists 'starting a business', 'running for office', and 'failing in office' as things women must do in their lives.
It symbolically shows the life of a challenging woman named Kim Jin-ae.
You learn more from the process than the outcome, and the sense of accomplishment and self-esteem that comes from taking on challenges, even if you fail, is irreplaceable.
A life of triumph despite failures in work and relationships is perhaps the attitude that women need most right now.
* Kim Jin-ae's Study Theory - Philosophy and Art Save Children
Dr. Kim Jin-ae's study philosophy is simple.
“Studying is something you do to make playing more fun.”
Also, the most important thing in educating children is to equip them with the power of philosophy and art.
In an age of elite chaos, this book sends a message to our society that the true purpose of education is to nurture individuals who can think for themselves and enjoy beauty.
* Beyond gender conflict, crossing over androgyny
An era of intense misandry and misogyny.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae was once asked by a boy, “Are you a boy or a girl?” and was given the nickname “Brother Jin-ae” by Choi Wook, the host of “Maebul Show.”
I used to hate being called 'older sister', but now I enjoy being called both 'brother' and 'older sister'.
'Oppa' and 'Sister' are still annoying.
Flexibility in identity and communication that transcends gender is precisely the gender sensitivity needed today.
By listening to Dr. Kim Jin-ae's personal experience, we can think about fundamental solutions to gender conflict.
* The Revolution of Light that Breaks Through Martial Law, and the Women of 2030 at its Center
On December 3, 2023, in the middle of the plaza that had broken through the 'night of martial law', there were women in their 20s and 30s.
Politics, change has already begun.
However, Dr. Kim Jin-ae does not miss the sobering analysis that power corrupts people regardless of gender.
Dr. Kim Jin-ae then encourages women to embrace a healthy will to power and proactive political participation instead of a lust for power, and argues that more women with responsible leadership should emerge, suggesting their roles as citizens who protect democracy.
“Life is a first for everyone.
May everyone fully enjoy the surprise and joy.”
─Dreaming of a world where no one gives up on their daughter,
A record of hope from an intellectual
Dr. Kim Jin-ae accepts every moment of life as a "first experience" and hopes that everyone lives without missing the joy and delight of that first experience.
Especially women are all someone's daughter, a girl, a mother, a 'hamni (grandmother)'.
I ideally envision a society where people discover the pure joy of first experiences throughout their lives, in addition to the joy of being a girl, the joy of becoming a mother, and the joy of becoming a mother.
However, a society where low birth rates, misogyny, and the burden of caregiving are passed on to women makes it difficult for women to live a life where they can experience more wonderful moments.
If women are to live a life filled with joy, we need a society that doesn't let them lose their dreams.
I hope that together with the readers of this book, we can create a society that protects such dreams.
* How can I design my own life in a changing world and in the changing lives of women?
* In these times of chaos and conflict, when we cannot see the future, what kind of adult voice do we need?
* What is the attitude to live one's life to the fullest without fear, even if it means bumping into things and breaking things?
