Language and Symbolic Power
Description
Book Introduction
World-renowned scholar Bourdieu reveals the hidden collusion between language and power.
There are many gateways to life that we face, such as college entrance exams, employment, dating, and marriage.
However, the key factor in these rites of passage is always ‘language.’
To win in any game of life, you must use the 'right language'.
So what exactly is "correct language"? And if this "correct language" is the key that unlocks the narrow gates of life, does that mean that those who create it, those who pass it on, and those who possess it all possess power? "Language et Pouvoir Symbolique" (Langage et Pouvoir Symbolique) begins with these questions.
Bourdieu believed that language was not simply an expression of an individual's character or grammatical ability, but could also be used to wield power.
In other words, language activities do not occur in a vacuum, but rather within complex relationships and rules. In this process, invisible power relations can be formed, which divide those who benefit from them and those who suffer losses.
Based on these ideas, Bourdieu analyzes the entire system and ideology surrounding us, including education, society, politics, and philosophy, and mercilessly exposes the strategies that attempt to hide power in various and subtle forms within language, as well as the attempts to secretly acquire privilege through these strategies.
It is a critique and theorization of the invisible 'rules of the game' of the world we live in through the sharp eyes of a world-renowned sociologist.
