A friendly and rich Bible study resource

“This book finds a balance between simplicity and beauty.”

Recommended by Kwon Yeon-kyung, Gil Seong-nam, Ryu Ho-jun, Madison Pierce, and more!

A guide to connecting the text to the lives of believers by viewing the entire Bible from the perspective of “God’s story of salvation.”
The Bible is a collection of books from various authors, readers, and genres.
How can we understand the Bible as a story? And what message does it convey to us today? In their book, "The Bible Lesson," distinguished biblical theologians Scott Duvall and Daniel Hayes offer apt and effective answers to these questions.
They build a solid foundation for faith by properly locating and connecting each scene of the Bible within a plot that leads to creation and crisis, covenant, calling, commandments, conquest and Canaanization, establishment of the kingdom, division of the kingdom, exile and return, Christ, the church, and consummation.
It also provides readers with practical insights that they can reflect on and apply in their daily lives, ultimately leading to a transformed life.

Into the book
It is no exaggeration to say that the story you choose is the most important choice of your life.
Sadly, if you never think about the stories that guide your life, you will be swept away by the most powerful cultural currents in the world.
We wrote this book, Bible Lessons, to help you better understand God's great story that guides your life and to help you make wise choices.
--- From the "Introduction"

God's great story begins with the declaration, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).
This sentence is the most basic and fundamental description of the setting of this great story and how we fit into it.
The implications of this opening statement are far-reaching and decisive.
In this declaration, we see that God, the central figure of the story, is the Creator.
We can also see that the second character in this story, humans, are part of creation.
The answers to the most important questions about the meaning and fundamental issues of life are contained in this passage.
If we accept this opening statement, a number of things will become clear in a row.
Our lives will be clearly organized and will change from chaos to order, as described in Genesis 1.
Our basic relationship with God will be clearly established: He is the Creator and we are created beings.
--- 「1.
From “Creation and Crisis”

Some very important events in David's life occur in 2 Samuel 7.
David has a desire to build God's 'house' (meaning a temple).
But God tells David through Nathan that instead of David building God's house, God himself will build David a 'house' (meaning a dynasty).... Here God establishes the Davidic covenant.
In this covenant, God promises that David's descendants will sit on the throne of God's kingdom, enjoying eternal prosperity.
Later in the Old Testament, the prophets connect this covenant with the hope of the Messiah, the coming king who would be a descendant of David.
Furthermore, the New Testament proclaims that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the promise made to David, and that He is the promised Messiah and King of God, coming from David's lineage.
--- 「6.
From “The Establishment of the Kingdom”

Therefore, Job, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon are balanced with Proverbs.
These four books must be considered together for a complete picture of a wise and godly life.
A truly wise person will embrace the precepts of the Proverbs and use them to cultivate his character.
But a wise person will also develop as part of his or her personality the insight to recognize and embrace exceptions to the norms of life.
--- 「7.
From “The Fellowship and Common Sense of the Kingdom”

Later, Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem and declared, “I have truly built a house for the Lord, a place for you to dwell forever” (1 Kings 8:13).
But as time passed and sadly, due to the Israelites' breaking of the covenant, God's glory left the temple.
Finally, God came back to us in Jesus.
He is “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.”
Jesus, who came to the world, clearly demonstrates God's powerful will to restore the lost paradise and dwell among His people forever.
--- 「11.
From “Captivity and Return”

Even though the disciples properly confessed their faith in Jesus as the Christ, they refused to accept the Lord's plan to be crucified.
At that time, the disciples expected the Messiah to walk a path that was splendid and brilliant by worldly standards.
But on the Mount of Transfiguration, God the Father tells the disciples to “listen” to Jesus’ words (Matthew 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35).
Listening to Jesus' words is the most important part of following Him.
Jesus' way is different from the world's way.
Our task is not to redefine the being or character of Jesus, as Peter said, “This shall never happen to you” (Matthew 16:22), nor to create another religious system, as Peter planned to build three tabernacles.
Our task is to hear Jesus' words and follow them.
--- 「13.
From "Christ: Jesus' Journey to Jerusalem"

Through heavenly teachings, amazing miracles, sacrificial death, and resurrection, Jesus accomplished what Israel had failed to do.
Ultimately, the promises God had made in advance were completely fulfilled in Jesus, His only begotten Son.
The power and beauty of what Jesus did can also be expressed as follows:
That is, in Jesus, God provided the righteousness He had demanded of His people.
--- From "Conclusion"

Publisher's Review
Goals of the Bible Class:
Finding Our Place in God's Grand Drama of Salvation

“As we follow the long arc of the drama of salvation that originates in the Bible with this book, we come to a new realization of our place in life as an extension of that drama.”
- Kwon Yeon-kyung, Professor of New Testament Studies, Department of Christian Studies, Soongsil University

We enjoy stories.
When sharing your impressions of a drama or novel, you can empathize with the characters' emotions or interpret the plot in your own words.
The Bible also contains the drama of God's salvation for us, but the story doesn't come across as vividly as a drama or novel you watch over the weekend.
This is because we cannot understand the entire Bible as God's story of salvation.
Rather than reading the entire Bible as one story, we tend to read each book separately or even in smaller pieces.
This is also undoubtedly a reading method that leads to deeper knowledge.
But if we don't put in enough time and effort, these readings leave us with only fragments of Scripture.
Now is the time to read and study the Bible in a new way to understand God's story of salvation in a larger context.

Penetrating into life
God's Great Salvation Story

In "Bible Lessons," authors Daniel Hayes and Scott Duvall tell stories from the Old and New Testaments, respectively.
While following a plot that encompasses the story of the Israelites and the early church—creation and crisis, covenant, calling, commandments, conquest and Canaanization, establishment of the kingdom, kingdom fellowship and common sense, division of the kingdom, exile and return, interim period, Christ, the church, and consummation—it weaves together the 66 books of the Bible at each point.
Through this, each book of the Bible, with its different authors, readers, genres, and styles, is harmoniously connected to one another.

But 『Bible Lessons』 goes one step further.
In fact, we truly become passionate about a story when it connects with our lives.
At such times, stories gently rebuke and transform us in ways we have never experienced before.
In the preface discussing the necessity of this book, the authors write:
“The Bible, God’s great story, is presented as the only true story that provides the best answers to life’s most fundamental questions.
This story confronts and challenges the dominant cultural narrative of our time and all other narratives, including our personal stories” (p. 15).
Each chapter's "Living the Story" section reveals how the Bible challenges us in each scene of the Great Story, shaping our identity in faith and reaffirming our calling in God's Great Story.

The Best Bible Study Materials

“With its engaging writing style and engaging approach, this book is a highly recommended introduction to the meaning of the Bible.”
- David Dockery, Professor of Theology, Southwest Theological Seminary

"Bible Lessons" is a very well-made supplementary textbook.
It reminds me of the social studies textbooks or social studies books that piqued my interest as a child.
The text summarizes the stories of the Bible and organizes them using diagrams and tables.
On the other hand, there are supplementary notes, which cover topics that are interesting to the reader but require in-depth exploration, and include excerpts from the writings of numerous theologians and Christian thinkers.
Numerous updated maps included in the revised edition provide a historical overview from the time of the Israelites to Paul's missionary journeys.
Additionally, at the end of each chapter, references and discussion questions are provided, as well as a list of assignments to help readers internalize what they have learned.

The diligent writing of these authors, comparable to textbooks, also achieves a high degree of completeness under their sound and integrated perspective.
Madison Pierce, who teaches New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, says the book “finds a balance between simplicity and beauty.”
The authors not only impart knowledge and information for understanding the Bible, but also trace the relationship between God and His people, connecting the meaning of the Old and New Testaments through topics such as 'covenant,' 'kingdom of God,' and 'presence of God.'
Through this work, Madison Pierce's words, the simplicity of a clear framework and theological beauty are combined, ultimately creating the optimal Bible study material for readers.
