Book Introduction
* A strong candidate for the papacy, Cardinal Yoo Heung-sik, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, recommended
“This book contains answers to the challenges facing the church and the world today.”
"I am confident that this book, which captures the life of Pope Francis, will connect the hearts of the Pope and the Korean people."
* “It is time to say goodbye.” The Pope’s final message was ‘love.’
* Pope Francis' first official autobiography, in which he tells his own life story.

The first official autobiography of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 (local time), "My Life," is also a book for which Cardinal Lazarus Yoo Heung-sik, who was also mentioned as a strong candidate for the papacy, wrote a lengthy recommendation.

We can glimpse the Pope's special affection for Korea, his thoughts on his appointment as Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, and Cardinal Yoo Heung-sik's special affection and close relationship with Pope Francis.
“I learn a lot every day from the Pope, who is a good grandfather who loves and serves everyone.” He hopes that readers, like himself, will gain comfort and inner strength by observing and learning from the Pope’s life, and that the hearts of the Pope and the Korean people will connect, conveying once again Pope Francis’ message of love and hope revealed through this book.
He also showed extraordinary interest by requesting the co-author, Italian journalist Fabio Marchese Lagona, to write a preface for the Korean edition.

In his eulogy, Cardinal Yoo Heung-sik said that Pope Francis lived a “wonderfully beautiful life,” but Pope Francis’ life was a series of pain and suffering.
Born into a poor immigrant family, he experienced World War II as a child, military dictatorship in his youth, a lonely life as a student abroad, and a sudden decline in his career.
Even after being appointed bishop, he had to deal with the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the economic crisis that hit Argentina, and after being elected pope, he had to overcome the COVID-19 crisis.
But Pope Francis never lost love in any situation and tried to maintain his 'attitude to life'.
Elements like frugality, kindness, generosity, acceptance, and humor are timeless guides to how to live.

The message left by Pope Francis, the 'adult of our times', based on his own life, is gentle but resonates deeply.
Although he passed away first, every page is filled with encouraging sentences telling those left behind not to lose hope.

Into the book
“We must learn from history, especially its dark pages, so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”
--- From "First Sentence"

Life is the most precious book given to us.
Unfortunately, this book has become one that many people either never read, or read too late, before they die.
But what we have been searching in vain on other paths, we will finally find in the book of life.
--- p.17

It is a blessing that whenever human dignity is violated, there is always a collective resistance to social or racial injustice and abuse of power.
So, I would like to describe those who participate in nonviolent protests as “Samaritans” who rise up to protect human dignity.
We must remember that racism is a disease, a virus.
--- pp.43-44

Being on the side of the poor doesn't automatically make you a communist.
The gospel is not given to the rich, but to the poor, because the poor are in Jesus' heart.
There is no ideology when it comes to poverty.
--- p.75

The great religions do not teach fear or division.
It teaches harmony, unity and tolerance.
Fear, on the other hand, paralyzes relationships, threatens trust, and fosters distrust of others, the unknown, and others.
--- pp.102-103

It's not just physical walls.
When we cannot get along with someone at peace, there is a wall that separates us.
How beautiful would the world be if bridges were built instead of barriers?
--- p.149

How many problems could be solved if we learned to listen, if we learned to hear each other? Because listening means pausing and dwelling in the other person's life and mind.
It also means not to pass by indifferently.
In fact, in our daily lives, we are accustomed to being indifferent to the lives of others, uninterested in what they want to say, and responding before they have even finished speaking.
--- p.209

I love seeing young people, especially young students, fighting for the environment and protesting against governments that aren't doing enough to address climate change.
There is not much time left to save the Earth.
When I see young people taking to the streets, I always say, “Scream!”
--- p.256

But remember, to learn how to live, you must learn how to love.
The most important lesson we can learn is love.
Because love always wins.
By loving, we can break down great barriers, overcome conflict, and defeat indifference and hatred.

Publisher's Review
Pope Francis
The message that permeates his life: 'Love'

Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025 (local time), the Monday after Easter.
“It is time to say goodbye,” Pope Francis says in the closing lines of his first official autobiography, My Life, in which he shares the story of his long life journey, a story titled My Life, or “vita” in Italian.
As he concluded the story, he revealed a message that would remain with him throughout his life.
It was 'love'.
“Remember, to learn how to live, you must learn how to love.
The most important lesson we can learn is love.
Because love always wins.”

Also, as he had said during his lifetime that his mission as a Pope must continue “until the end of his life (ad vitam),” he left after fulfilling his duties as Pope until the end.
Pope Francis honestly tells the story of his life through the ups and downs of the years in “My Life,” recording major historical events from the time he was three years old during World War II until his death.
He is gone, but his message and will live on.

A story that runs through history
My Story

"My Life" is Pope Francis' first official autobiography, in which he tells his own story.
It was published in Italy in the spring of 2024, and was originally the only autobiography to be published while he was still alive.
Pope Francis has said that “life is the most precious book we have been given” and that “telling our life stories is the most beautiful and intimate way of communicating.”
The book that summarizes one's life in one volume according to such usual will is "My Life."

He honestly tells of the dark shadow of World War II that began when he was three, the horror of the atomic bomb that swept through Argentina, the moment he experienced the priesthood and his mother's opposition, the experience of being swayed by a girl he met by chance, and his feelings when he saw the moon landing and Maradona's "Hand of God."
Like a story from the past told by a witty grandfather, the 'decisive moments' experienced since the 1930s unfold like a panorama.

The experience of the harsh military regime is like a scene from a historical documentary, and the moment of the 2013 conclave when he was elected Pope is like a first-person movie.
The Pope, who has always loved tango and movies, speaks with surprising honesty, humor, and a series of twists and turns that make the story exciting.

Pope Francis also opens up about things people wonder about him.
He explains in detail his feelings at the time, saying that he knows many people are curious about what went through his mind as he walked alone through St. Peter's Square on March 15, 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was at its peak.
My first thought was loneliness, but as I walked, the thought of 'inclusiveness' came to me. I was standing alone in the square, but my heart and mind were in contact with everyone in the world, and I felt a sense of closeness.

War, homosexuality, AI…

A clear message to the world

The book also contains the Pope's messages on war, homosexuality, church reform, and technological advancements.
Just as his last message before his death was that the war must stop, he reiterates his willingness to do whatever it takes to stop the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and urges an end to the atrocities.

While the church clearly opposes same-sex marriage when it comes to homosexuality, it supports civil unions, saying that the church should reach out to those on the margins of society and that “those who receive the gift of love and live in community should be able to receive legal protections like everyone else.”
The Pope's consistent message is that the Church must stand with LGBTQ+ people and make them feel at home.

Pope Francis also made headlines by appointing the first woman to serve as a Vatican minister, and this book also contains his will that “the place of women in the Church must be expanded.”
This passage gives us a glimpse into the fact that the Pope's action had been in preparation for a long time.

He talks in detail about the Apollo 11 moon landing that he experienced in his youth, and also expresses his stance on progress and new technological developments.
In particular, AI can pose a great risk to humanity if misused, and algorithmic ethics, which studies the interaction between AI and humans, is necessary.

In addition, it contains detailed stories such as the story of the 'white box' received from Benedict XVI, the background of staying at the Santa Marta residence instead of choosing the papal residence, and personal memories and experiences during the 2013 conclave.
This book will be of great help not only to those curious about the thoughts and perspectives of the man Jorge Mario Bergoglio, but also to those curious about the Pope's next steps.

“The most remarkable aspect of this book is the way Pope Francis draws attention to the crucial themes of our time: social justice, solidarity, and those in need.
Reading naturally leads to reflection and gives the feeling of being on an intimate journey.
“I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know not only the Pope’s life but also his thoughts on current issues.” - From a review by an Italian reader
