Book Introduction
In this memoir, Manstein provides a brilliant analysis of Hitler's policies and orders.
It also details the growing disillusionment and awakening among the officer corps about Hitler, including a personal argument in which he confronted Hitler and said sharply, "I am a gentleman."

Publisher's Review
On the World War II from a German perspective and the strategic opportunities ultimately missed.
The best book to get an overall view

After being dismissed by Hitler in March 1944, Manstein spent the final days of the war at home watching the needless delays in a war that was undoubtedly already decided.
He was subsequently tried in a British court for war crimes in Russia and sentenced to 18 years in prison, from which he was released four years later.

Although he worked for a brutal regime that was almost like the devil, he was a patriotic soldier who fought for his country.
He was an officer who had high personal standards and character according to the Soldier's Code and was respected by all his colleagues.
Through his memoirs, he intended to give us insight into his personal thoughts and how they were reflected in events, and he succeeded in that intention and served many other purposes.
His memoirs are among the best ever published from a German military perspective and are an indispensable source for understanding the causes and background of the war Hitler unleashed.
