Publisher's Review
The history of Goryeo recorded in official history, 《History of Goryeo》 and 《Abridged History of Goryeo》
Reclaim your vitality at Park Si-baek's fingertips!
- 500 years of Goryeo history brought back to life through the hands of a master craftsman named Park Si-baek, from storyboard to animation.
The Goryeo Dynasty is a history that we have been familiar with on the surface, but when we look closely, we have never really known about it.
From the name "Korea" derived from "Goryeo" to the cultural achievements represented by the Tripitaka Koreana and Goryeo celadon, and even the historical drama "Taejo Wang Geon" that aired in the early 2000s and is still used as an internet meme to this day, there are things that easily come to mind for any Korean when they think of "Goryeo."
However, very few people know the specific details of the historical flow of the Goryeo Dynasty's rise and fall and the political upheaval that unfolded within it.
Historical records of Goryeo history are extremely scant, having been naturally and intentionally erased over the course of at least 630 years, and most of Goryeo's relics and historical sites are located in present-day North Korea and are therefore difficult to access.
Because in-depth academic research and the production of written works are difficult, there has been a dearth of reliable, accessible, and enjoyable content about the Goryeo Dynasty.
Accordingly, Park Si-baek set out to restore the Goryeo Dynasty using the method he had always done and was best at, that is, using official historical materials as a basis.
Park Si-baek focused on the Goryeosa and Goryeosa Cheoryo, which are considered one of the four major official histories of the Republic of Korea, along with the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Samguk Sagi.
《History of Goryeo》 is a history book of the Goryeo Dynasty compiled by Kim Jong-seo, Jeong In-ji, and others upon the royal decree of King Sejong of Joseon. It is the oldest historical document of Goryeo that has survived to the present day. It includes not only historical books of the time but also various original historical documents such as anthologies and epitaphs, and is composed of a massive content of 139 volumes and 75 books, including 46 volumes of genealogy, 39 volumes of history, 2 volumes of chronology, 50 volumes of biographies, and 2 volumes of lists.
The compiler did not create sentences but copied and pasted the original text, and the book is evaluated as a history book that maintains strict historical accuracy and objectivity by including both praise and criticism of each individual in its evaluation of characters.
《Goryeosa》 is the most abundant basic document on the Goryeo Dynasty and an official history that records the history of Goryeo. Its academic and cultural value has been recognized, and it was designated as a national treasure by the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2021. 《Goryeosa Cheoryo》 is also recognized as a valuable historical material that supplements the insufficient content of 《Goryeosa》, not just a summary of 《Goryeosa》.
Park Si-baek looked through every record in the Goryeosa and Goryeosa Cheoryo line by line, digging up and accumulating facts that were on the verge of being lost to the back alleys of history, and filled his own historical notebooks with them.
The collected materials are skillfully woven into a story by adjusting the intensity of the spotlight according to the recognized historical context.
Fragments of history that had existed only as single lines of records in dusty historical materials are now supplemented with appropriate metaphors and easily understandable sentences, and are overlaid with meticulously detailed drawings that depict everything from the features of the characters to their wrinkled faces and flowing hair.
Here, the psychological descriptions of characters, taking advantage of the genre of comics, are vividly presented.
Reborn through the meticulous care of the craftsman Park Si-baek, the History of Goryeo sheds the shadow of centuries and regains its overflowing vitality, fully reproducing the dynamism and independence of 500 years of Goryeo history before our eyes, eliciting both emotion and thrills from readers.
From the beginning of the Goryeo Dynasty to its fall,
500 Years of Goryeo History: A Quick, Easy-to-Read Guide to Understanding
- Park Si-baek's History of Goryeo, which summarizes the history of Goryeo, even the names of its kings are unfamiliar.
Volume 1 of Park Si-baek's History of Goryeo contains the story of the first 100 years of the Goryeo Dynasty, from the Later Three Kingdoms period, when Gyeon Hwon, Gung Ye, and Wang Geon fought, to the unification of the Three Kingdoms, and the story of Gwangjong and Seongjong.
In the Later Three Kingdoms period, a time of unprecedented chaos and dynamism, unlike Gung Ye and Gyeon Hwon, who prioritized fear and authority, Wang Geon, with his tolerance for differences and insight into the public sentiment, exuded the demeanor of a benevolent man who would lead the new era and boldly ran toward the unification of the Three Kingdoms.
From King Taejo Wang Geon, who achieved the unparalleled independent unification of the Korean Peninsula, to King Seongjong, who laid the foundation of the nation based on Confucian rule, the magnificent and magnificent history of the Goryeo Dynasty, which has been shrouded in mystery until now, begins its first pulse.
Volume 2 covers a period of approximately 150 years, from the 7th king, Mokjong, to the 17th king, Injong.
In Volume 2, Goryeo, which was just beginning to establish its foundation as a nation, is faced with trials due to foreign powers.
The Khitans, who had seized control of the continent, launched three large-scale invasions, and the Jurchens in the northeast gathered their forces, established a nation, and demanded tributary tributaries.
Internally, rebels such as Kim Chi-yang, Lee Ja-gyeom, and Myo Cheong threaten the legitimacy of the dynasty without a fight.
The dazzling true face of Goryeo, a small but strong, solid yet flexible nation, is revealed as it endured various national crises, from the invasion of the Khitan to the rise of the Jurchen, the Rebellion of Yi Ja-gyeom, and the Rebellion of Myocheong, but nevertheless steadfastly moved forward and built a golden age.
Volume 3 opens with the military coup, the greatest rebellion since the founding of Goryeo that shook the foundations of the country.
The deep-rooted anger of the military officials, who could no longer tolerate the contempt of the aristocratic families who had solidified their ruling system through heredity and marriage, the 19th king, King Uijong, who was surrounded by eunuchs and sorcerers and indulged in luxury and pleasure, and the long-standing discrimination against civil officials, exploded, and a coup began that would drown Gaeseong in blood.
Meanwhile, the people, who were in dire straits due to the tyranny and mismanagement of the government, raised the torch of rebellion.
In a world where power is the key to order, Goryeo is caught up in endless upheaval.
Volume 4 covers the turbulent times of the Mongol invasion, Goryeo's resistance, Yuan intervention, and Goryeo's transition to a vassal state.
During the military regime of the Choi clan, when the power of the Goryeo Dynasty was still strong, Goryeo faced Mongolia, which was rapidly rising and conquering the continent.
Although countless people led a 30-year resistance against the Mongol army, the power of the military that had lasted for 100 years was completely transferred to the Mongols (Yuan).
Since King Chungnyeol became the first son-in-law of the Yuan dynasty, Goryeo established new external relations with the Yuan dynasty as a vassal state, and the Yuan dynasty's interference, which held the ultimate power to decide on the appointment and dethronement of the Goryeo king, began in earnest.
Volume 5 covers the late Goryeo Dynasty, which was on the path to ruin amidst chaos from King Chungsuk to King Gongyang.
Due to Yuan's interference, the king's dethronement and restoration are repeated, and the royal authority is shaken.
Meanwhile, as the Red Turban Rebellion arose and threatened the power of the Yuan Dynasty, King Gongmin pursued reforms under the banner of independence from the Yuan Dynasty.
However, the reforms were frustrated by successive coups and invasions, and as the ruthless misconduct of the kings was combined with the tyranny of the powerful families, public sentiment collapsed, and the Goryeo Dynasty faced its greatest crisis since its founding.
At that time, Choi Young, an undefeated general, emerged as a hero, seized power, and gathered the scattered hearts of the people, but the fallen royal authority could no longer find its place.
Jeong Mong-ju, the 'last Goryeo person', tries to protect the dynasty, but he is not enough to stop the forces that dream of a new world, such as Jeong Do-jeon and Yi Seong-gye.
A special gift for readers who have been waiting for the complete publication.
- Bromides of Goryeo figures, a world map of the Goryeo royal family, and even YouTube's "Park Si-baek's Goryeo History"
Each volume contains a chronological table of the history of Goryeo and a world map of the royal family during that period, and the set includes a bromide (front) depicting major figures of Goryeo drawn by artist Park Si-baek, and a world map of the royal family of Goryeo (back) showing major events and figures of Goryeo history, allowing readers to see the flow of Goryeo history at a glance.
In addition, members of the Podcast Park Si-baek's Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, painter Park Si-baek, Professor Shin Byeong-ju of Konkuk University, and Kim Hak-won, CEO of Humanist, have reunited to delve into the 500 years of Goryeo history through the YouTube channel Park Si-baek's History of Goryeo and share stories that were not told in the book.
