Into the book
It is only when we stop our rush toward wealth and success that we begin to see our true selves.
While running towards wealth and success, it is easy to get so caught up in the rush that you lose sight of what is truly important.

--- p.30

When I see someone, I really believe that they are someone who will never lose their sense of self, no matter how difficult things get.
There is a person who gives you the belief that even if you falter for a moment in the midst of life's pain, whether it's failure in business or promotion, you will quickly shake it off and get back up.
The source of that faith and that power lies in ‘emptiness.’
It lies in the wisdom to be able to empty and accept at any time.
--- pp.72-73

Choosing poverty ultimately means making life simpler and wiser.
The less you own, the freer you are, and the less convenient you are, the healthier you are.
True poverty is the most direct practice of facing the essence of life and is a great teacher who melts away desires and attachments.

--- p.93

If you are lonely, feel the loneliness deeply; if you are angry, observe the anger as it is; if you are sad, become one with the sadness and be sad.
Observe that feeling without discrimination and feel it fully.
Whatever feeling comes is fine.
Let go of the content of the feeling, whether it is good or bad.

--- p.158

Someone once said, 'You see as much as you know,' but I think it's not about seeing as much as you know, but rather feeling as much as you see.
Of course, in this real world of discernment, it is right to see as much as you know, but it is also important to realize that there is also the possibility of wisdom in 'seeing without knowing.'
To see as much as you know means to see according to your knowledge, and it is nothing more than seeing according to your knowledge.

--- p.239

The issue is not how much you earn, but how satisfied you are with your life.
My happiness index is the index of my satisfaction, not the index of my possessions.
Knowing how to reduce your possessions and be content with what you have is the secret to ultimate happiness.
--- p.292

Publisher's Review
Instead of seeking quick fortune, ask about wealth of the heart.

People living today are not satisfied with just going to work.
With just a monthly salary, it is not easy to buy an apartment with a view of the Han River, let alone a small apartment in Sadamun.
Instead, they jump into investing in stocks, bitcoin, and real estate, aiming to make a fortune with high-risk, high-return strategies.

But the 'dream of making it big' is leaving a shadow of debt on more and more young people.
Among those who applied for debt adjustment due to failure in investment and inability to repay debt, those in their 20s and 30s account for 51% of all applicants (Source: Etoday, March 2024).
The result of choices made with the goal of 'getting rich quick' is actually leading to an endless pile of debt.

Material success does not guarantee happiness.
All that remains after running forward in pursuit of wealth and fame is emptiness and anxiety.
In uncertain times, we push ourselves to earn more and climb higher.
But after running so busily, when you suddenly look back, you realize that you have been living a life that has forgotten how to live well.
In these times, the Venerable Pomnyun asks the exact opposite question.

“Are we really living well now?”

Become a person who 'lives well' rather than a person who 'lives well'!

To those who strive to become rich, the Venerable Beopsang says:
“Learn how to live well, not how to become rich.” No matter how much money and material possessions you have, you can still be poor in spirit.
If we are driven by anxiety and emptiness despite achieving external success, we may be running in the wrong direction.
Now is the time to learn how to 'empty well' rather than 'how to earn well'.
The more we let go of our desires, the lighter our lives become and the richer our hearts become.

In life, everyone has times of poverty and times of abundance.
The important thing is to maintain your center without being swayed by external conditions at all times.

More important than becoming rich is living well.
What is always more important than what is ‘becoming’ is what is ‘being’.

Rather than asking, “What do you want to become?” isn’t the question, “What do you live by?” more meaningful?
Chapter 1, "The Poor Rich Man," p. 27

The real 'jackpot' is not external success.
True wealth lies in discovering yourself awake in the moment right before your eyes and feeling the richness of life within it.

How to live fully today, learning abundance from everyday life

Let's look at the following items and check if any of them apply.

- No matter how dire the situation is, do you find yourself shouting, 'The universe is helping me'?
- Do you have the courage to give up when it doesn't work even after trying three times?
- Have you set aside a portion of your salary for sharing?
- Are you comfortable reading books on new topics or trying new things?
- Are you listening carefully to what the other person is saying and empathizing with it?
- Do you have time during the day when you can just sit there and think about nothing?

The above items are part of the lifestyle practice methods suggested by the Venerable Pomnyun to become a ‘good person.’
In addition, it contains universal wisdom that can be put into practice in the midst of life's hardships, so it can be applied in daily life when one's mind is wavering or one is deeply troubled.

Monk Beopsang uses the language of practice to solve real-life problems such as employment, promotion, love and separation, and passing exams.
In this way, the monk guides us on the path to discovering the richness of life in our ordinary daily lives.
True abundance does not lie in the size of one's accomplishments.
It all depends on how fully you live in the present moment.
The depth and beauty of life are revealed in the conversations we share with our family, looking into each other's eyes over a meal or a cup of tea.
Life is lived in the present moment right before our eyes.
These moments show us the path to practicing emptiness, acceptance, and awareness.

《Living Better Than the Rich》 is a guide that extends the spirit of non-possession to modern life.
Even in an age dominated by material wealth and possessions, it warmly conveys how to live by practicing emptiness and acceptance while staying awake to the present moment at every moment.

From a single seed of the heart to a flower

This book is a completely revised edition of "Become a Rich Person Rather than a Rich Person" published in 2006.
Monk Beopsang revisited the writings he had written in his early days and refined them with the same mindset he had back then.
He describes this book as “the fruit of a seed sown in the early days of aspiration that has blossomed over time into a flower of vows.”
A text from 20 years ago returns to us today, still conveying a message that is most urgent.

《People Who Live Better Than the Rich》, which became the cornerstone of the YouTube channel 'Monk Beopsang's Moktak Sound' with 86 million cumulative views and 170,000 subscribers, makes us reflect on what true 'wealth' is.
Through this book, readers will be able to reflect on the wealth of their own hearts and discover true abundance in their lives.

The light, brisk, and refined sermons of Venerable Beopsang, like a gust of wind, provide the answer that clears the complicated mind and illuminates the path of life.
This book lovingly shows you the way to empty your life and fill your heart.
