Book Introduction
A word from MD
For the lovely Earth we create
The mere mention of the climate crisis may seem like a massive problem beyond our control, but with Guhee's adorable illustrations and accessible stories, it feels like we can start something right away.
A book that lovingly reaches out to us, saying that it's okay to not be perfect, so we should move together.

"Webtoons the Ministry of Environment Should Acquire!" - corn****

*Highly recommended by Tyler Rush, Isul-ah, and Jeongmo Lee!
*Includes unreleased episodes

[Climate Crisis Human], which became a hot topic as a webtoon series depicting an episode of the climate crisis encountered by an ordinary job seeker, has returned as a book.
All 46 episodes have been re-edited to fit the book, and are packed with even previously unreleased episodes that were not serialized.
This book has been reviewed by Deputy Director Lee Yu-jin of the Green Transition Research Institute, a climate and environmental expert, which has not only enhanced its credibility, but also raised expectations with strong recommendations from environmentally conscious broadcaster Tyler Rush, Director Lee Jeong-mo of the National Science Museum in Gwacheon, and author Lee Seul-ah.

“Climate Crisis Human” is a guide to managing the Earth for humans living in the era of climate crisis.
It talks about the moments when the protagonist, Gu-hee, becomes aware of the climate crisis in her daily life, the future that will be like if we continue to neglect the climate issue, and why we, as just one person among 8 billion people, must change.
It's even more special because it addresses potentially uncomfortable and difficult topics like veganism, carbon neutrality, and factory farming with cute illustrations and witty comments, making it easy and comfortable for anyone to read.

Easy-to-try practical measures in everyday life, such as 'packaging in reusable containers instead of delivery', 'taking on the natural plant-based diet challenge', and 'turning everyday worries into a game', inspire any Earthling to try them right away.
On the other hand, it also reaches out to those who question whether such small changes can truly change the world or hesitate because they lack the confidence to strictly control themselves.
It's okay not to be a complete vegan, no one is perfect, and it takes small actions to move society and, by extension, save the planet.
The time to turn a blind eye to the Earth's crisis is over.
Now it's time for everyone to get moving.

Into the book
Soon, the beauty of the seasons may only exist in fairy tales.

--- p.26

My reckless choices made both my room and myself sick.
I wasn't taking care of myself.
My room is the place where I spend the most time and is the only space in the world I have.
Why did we let it get to this point?
--- p.46

Throwing away trash is a necessary act in life, but it's sad that the trash isn't the result of wear and tear from long use, but rather my own greed.

--- p.55

Caring for the Earth may begin with protecting ourselves.
Listening to my own voice and what I truly want, rather than external voices.
Taking care of what I already have.
Taking care of what needs to be cherished rather than wanting new things.
Maybe that's the beginning of saving the Earth.
And myself too.

--- pp.73~75

In the age of climate crisis, I have two choices.
Should I live the way I have lived, or should I live changing as I learn more?
It is entirely my choice to choose the direction.

--- p.82

Only the person who 'started' even the smallest action can bring about change.
I resolved to make small but meaningful choices.
Because I want my life to be filled with good choices and meaning.

--- pp.110~111

I used to wonder, 'Why don't people change even though they know?' But I was the same when it came to meat dishes.
It was more important to keep my daily orbit than the Earth.
However, this does not mean that concerns and interest in climate change have disappeared.
Even though I want to protect it, I don't.
So I started down the path of contradiction.

--- p.149

The sea is so vast that it seems to offer infinite resources.
Perhaps surprisingly, humans catch about 5 million fish per minute.
This is because seafood consumption has increased by about three times in 50 years.
If fishing trends continue, the oceans will be empty by 2048.

--- p.150

Some might call me contradictory.
But just because I'm contradictory doesn't mean I can't do something.
I don't think vegans are people who practice to be morally 'perfect'.
They are people who simply want life to suffer less and the Earth to be less damaged.
I don't have to be perfect to protect and love something.

--- pp.178~179

There is no choice to live without creating waste and emitting carbon.
How did the world become like this? When did our lives become filled with unsustainable things?
--- p.272

I am always frustrated by the climate crisis.
Because it is such a large and complex discourse.
but….
That doesn't mean I can't do anything.
Let's do something small.
Let's do something small every day, whatever it takes for me.
Let us fill our lives sometimes with happiness, sometimes with sadness.
I am alive!
--- pp.294~295

I hope that one day, instead of a world where 'flex' and 'YOLO' are cool, a world where saving resources and being frugal (=being smart) is the trend will come.
Even though it may seem shabby, saving money is for a slightly better world.

--- pp.302~303

Land and plants absorb about 30% of the world's carbon.
If regenerated organic soils effectively absorb carbon dioxide, they could reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases by up to 40%.
Even without trees, weeds are enough to stabilize the soil.

--- p.321

The Earth has no proper 'manager'.
So people don't really feel the need to take responsibility for the Earth's environment.
Only those who care about the Earth will take care of it, and those who don't care will continue to live without it.

--- pp.346~347

Climate action, environmental practice.
It's a good idea, but it can't replace climate policy.
So what exactly does my small action, my small practice, mean? It's the ability to speak out.
A voice that can move voters.
It is important for each and every citizen to take an active interest in the climate crisis.
Because politicians have no choice but to put forward policies that are popular with the people.
--- p.365

Publisher's Review
“It’s a boring topic to deal with.
“Somehow it’s so cute and lovely.”

Did you know? We are the stewards of the Earth.
A Guide to Earth Management for Humans in the Age of Climate Crisis

'Somewhat shocking weather next week'.
It's shocking, but it's not surprising anymore.
The pandemic we've become accustomed to, forsythia blooming in November, mosquitoes still raging even after the start of winter, the melted Arctic ice, and the monsoon season lasting over 50 days.
This is not a scene from a disaster movie.
This is the 'reality' and 'daily life' that is happening around us now.
I feel like the Earth is going to hell, but I live with a sense of resignation because my day is more precious.
As the Earth gradually deteriorates due to the pandemic, the protagonist, Gu-hee, begins to question her own position in a society driven to extremes. Through her studies, she realizes that everything humans do, including social systems, customs, culture, and consumption, is connected to the climate crisis, and she decides to spread this truth.
Because if things continued this way, it seemed like humanity would perish before I could even become a grandmother.

A new way of life, living together with the Earth!
A refreshing, unique, and independent daily life

"Will you live as you have always lived? Or will you live a life of change, changing with the knowledge you gain?" Guhee's story of challenge plants the seeds of change in the reader's heart.
Easy-to-practice methods like having tteokbokki delivered and packaged in a pot, buying only the essentials, recycling delivery boxes, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, preparing a meatless meal, and challenging yourself to become an urban farmer offer a breath of fresh air called "subjectivity" to those of us consumed by our consumer-centric lives. Instead of blindly buying things based on social media ads, a life of self-reflection on whether "I" truly need them, a unique and fulfilling daily life built on my own choices rather than following others, will establish itself as a lifestyle that changes not only myself but also others.
Of course, success isn't always guaranteed.
Sometimes we may fall apart, and sometimes we may use disposable products, but these small and unique practices of challenging ourselves and taking action again may come together to make a day when frugal living becomes 'hip' instead of showing off abundance.

★A must-read webtoon for Earthlings, armed with scientific information and humor★

Don't underestimate it just because it's a cartoon.
"Climate Crisis Human" tackles ecological issues that could be heavy and difficult to explain in words, using cute and lovely illustrations and witty jokes.
It weaves together challenging topics like carbon neutrality, veganism, fossil fuels, factory farming, and primary energy with everyday material, making it an engaging read, like my own story, and even filling my head with environmental knowledge.
This is the ultimate introduction to ecology that will satisfy everyone, from teenagers just beginning to take an interest in climate change to readers deeply interested in environmental and social issues.

Author Gu Hee, who serialized the webtoon “Climate Crisis Human,” is actively working as an emerging eco-author through continuous collaborations with the Ministry of Environment, Zero Seoul, and environmental organizations.
This book, born from numerous requests for paperback publication, was reviewed by Lee Yu-jin, Deputy Director of the Green Transition Research Institute, a climate and environmental expert who is actively involved in various fields.
