Book Introduction
You and I found in a book,
Facing the truth about relationships

A candid record of relationships left behind by reading a thousand books.
“The moment a person feels difficult, that’s when a real relationship begins.”

The author encountered the true face of human relationships through the characters in a thousand literary works.
One of the author's wishes was to be good at interpersonal relationships, and through the book, he realized that relationships are not about being 'good at' but about 'having a heart to understand.'

"A Good Encounter" contains a journey of understanding wounds, learning love, and ultimately returning to being a "human."
The author uses the stories of the main characters in his work to guide us that the path to restoring relationships with others is the path to understanding ourselves.

This book is not a guide to improving interpersonal relationships.
However, I suggest to the reader, through the book, that they practice accepting themselves and you as they are, even though they are not perfect.
"A Good Encounter" awakens the emotions within the reader and gives them the courage to move forward.
As you close the last page, a gentle greeting will bloom in your heart, connecting you.

Into the book
I was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident 22 years ago and there was nothing I could do.
Since I became unwell, my opportunities to go out into the world have decreased, and I have met fewer and fewer people.
Still, I wanted to maintain good human relationships.
I wanted to hang out with lots of people because I was afraid that I would be left alone in another world.
Building good relationships wasn't as simple as I thought.
I couldn't be too eager to get to know the other person, and I couldn't just reveal my feelings.
The desire to do well doesn't always go as planned.
Reading flowed like water to me, who was clumsy at heart.
The door to my heart for reading opened in an unexpected place.
That's right, I wanted to find answers to my concerns about human relationships in books.
The reading that started like that led my life in a completely different direction than before.
--- From the "Prologue"

The reason I wasn't happy about someone's good news was because I wasn't okay.
If I feel bad about someone, it means I am having a hard time.
Conversely, if you are open to good news, you have the capacity to empathize with the good news of others.
There must be a reason why your heart is drawn to it.

--- p.24

Everyone experiences breakups.
Anyone who experiences a breakup feels pain and difficulty.
There is no world without sorrow and loss.
Pain cannot be endured or easily forgotten.
Love cannot be completely erased by another love.
So, before a breakup, you need enough time to properly grieve and let the other person go.
Only then can we move forward into another world without hesitation.
--- p.39

People who are good at drawing the next picture of their lives see themselves objectively.
Know how to protect yourself.
I know whether the other person is doing something because they love me or not.
I stop begging for my life from others.
Not easily swayed by someone's attention and not swept away by the name of love.
Beautiful love is created with one's own unique emotions and language.
It cannot be compared to anyone and cannot be explained.
Love is an emotion between two people, and a path that leads to the growth of a person.
Beautiful love makes me a better person.
It makes me look forward to tomorrow.

Publisher's Review
A record of the relationship between a writer who became paralyzed from the waist down in a traffic accident.

About relationships and life learned again through books.

Books recommended by actors Kim Jung-nan and Kang So-ra!

I don't think there's a single person who hasn't thought about human relationships at least once.
Everyone finds relationships difficult and awkward.
The reading essay, "A Peaceful Encounter," provides comfort and empathy to those struggling with interpersonal relationships.
Author Lee Yu-shin went through a difficult time 22 years ago after being diagnosed with quadriplegia in a traffic accident.
When he felt like he couldn't do anything, when he felt like he was left alone in the world, it was 'books' that reached out to him.
The author rebuilt his broken heart through the book.

“Reading has taken my life in a completely different direction than before.
“Just as relationships with people become stronger when we overcome conflict, after reading a book, the writing and I become closer.” (From the prologue)

While reading the book, the author empathized with the hearts of the characters in the book and reflected on himself by looking at their lives as a mirror.
I learned how to deal with difficulties by watching the main character resolve the conflict.
In this way, he took care of his own heart by carefully cherishing those around him.

“If I am bothered by someone’s bad news, it means I am having a hard time.
Conversely, if you are open to good news, you have the capacity to empathize with the good news of others.
“Isn’t there a reason why your heart is drawn to it?” (p. 24)

If you've ever felt surprised and rebuked by the unexpected emotion when good news from someone close to you doesn't always sound welcome, you'll fully empathize with the passages in this book.
In this way, the author conveys comfort to readers by writing about his honest inner voice.
Anyone can do that.
It is at times like these that we must look back on ourselves.

There are many different encounters in this world.
Family, friends, lovers, colleagues… .
If you're eyeing this book for a safe encounter with them, I dare say you've made the right choice.
As you read the book, you will recall someone who was hidden in the back of your memory and bring back the feelings you were unable to express to them.
Just as the author did, I hope that readers of this book will be able to build strong relationships with those around them through the book.
I hope that eventually, you will be able to face your inner self and calmly embrace it.
