Masuda Miri Travel Essay Set
Description
Book Introduction
Masuda Miri's Travel Essay 3-Volume Set
Masuda Miri, who enjoys enthusiastic support from a diverse fan base, is well known as a sympathetic cartoonist and essayist, but she is also a travel enthusiast.
In 『I Traveled Alone』, a travelogue of traveling to every corner of Japan alone every month, the author showed the process of finding a travel style that suited him after going through the trials and errors of traveling alone, and in 『Travel Diary Around the World』, the author presented a travelogue that made him think about how to spend each day to have fun.
"A Leisurely Journey, Far and Near" talks about how it would be nice to have a familiar travel destination to visit when you feel tired, and the excitement of wanting to travel to a place you've never been before is also nice.
A new set of three representative travel essays by Masuda Miri is presented.

Into the book
Bessho Onsen, early summer sunset.
I returned to my accommodation and lazed around.
--- p.15 From “A Leisurely Journey, Far and Near”
The rose has bloomed.
A dandelion bloomed on its own next to the rose that had been carefully cared for.
Dandelions have a beauty of their own, and I was moved to look at them, projecting myself onto them, unlike a rose.
--- p.43 From “A Leisurely Journey, Far and Near”
Soft sunlight poured down from the ceiling.
Palm trees and blue swimming pool.
People who were liberated in swimsuits.
I wish heaven were like this.
I was just at the Hawaiians without even thinking about what was going on tomorrow.
--- p.65 From “A Leisurely Journey, Far and Near”
We have no choice but to trust the Trevi Fountain!
My coin went into the fountain (I think it did).
So I was a little excited throughout the trip.
When I return to Japan, I might suddenly get a confession.
But the love did not come true.
But I am dazzled by the me who threw two without hesitation back then.
--- p.14 From "Travel Diary from Around the World"
When I see a large animal, it's natural for me to feel small.
I don't think it's just a matter of size.
There are many different animals living on Earth, and on a cosmic scale, humans and reindeer are like poppy seeds… … .
'I, such a small being, live my life crying and laughing, treating my one and only life as a momentous event.'
I had this thought while looking at the reindeer.
--- p.82 From "Travel Diary from Around the World"
The winter morning I was born.
Father and Mother could never have imagined it.
Who would have thought that the tiny newborn baby in front of me would be celebrating his forty-second birthday on the streets of faraway Copenhagen?
“I hope you are doing well and in good health.”
It was a night in Copenhagen when I wanted to go tell my young parents this.
--- p.219 From "Travel Diary from Around the World"
Why is it embarrassing to be alone? It's a shame that comes from the fear that someone might think it's pitiful to have no one to travel such a scenic mountain with.
Some people are just passing travelers, and even if you think 'poor' of a complete stranger, you will never meet them again.
But I pretend to be someone who likes cameras or someone who came to report on something for work and take notes… … .
On the other hand, there is a part of me that thinks this is okay.
It feels like a lie to be able to act confidently anytime, anywhere.
--- p.210 From “I Traveled Alone”
The school route those students used was truly beautiful.
I take it for granted that I can see the beautiful Nagara River and the rugged mountains every morning and evening.
When I grow up, I will suddenly recall this scenery and feel nostalgic.
Rather than someone bragging about going to a prestigious high school, someone who says the scenery on their way to school is beautiful seems like a winner.
I returned to my accommodation and lazed around.

Publisher's Review
There is no such thing as a trivial journey, it is definitely filled with something.
“Traveling is really great~”
The consistent mood of 『A Leisurely Journey, Far and Near』 is one of leisure.
This is a recent travel story about a time when I was free and leisurely, going wherever my feet took me and my heart led me, according to my condition and circumstances that day, without feeling pressured to see all the tourist attractions or explore the local restaurants.
When I think about a place I've traveled to before and want to walk that road again, eat that food again, or rest at that hotel I stayed at, I suddenly go on a trip.
I also look forward to new trips, thinking about places I haven't been or tried yet.
This is a travel essay about a leisurely and free trip to places far and near.
Masuda Miri's Bumpy Japan Travelogue
"I Traveled Solo" is a travelogue that contains the story of a person who set a travel goal of traveling to all 47 prefectures of Japan once a month and then departed for a new region every month.
It will take four years to see all the regions, but there is no need to rush.
The schedule and location are chosen based on the situation and mood at the time, and it is a way to quickly leave Tokyo.
Since it was my first time traveling alone, I felt lonely because I had no one to talk to, and I was anxious about having to eat the local specialties in each region. However, as I continued to travel, I gradually became more at ease, and I began to think that buying a packed lunch and leisurely eating it at the hotel was also a good way to travel.
Through various trials and errors, Masuda Miri gradually becomes accustomed to traveling alone and shows the process of finding a travel style that suits her, in a candid and witty way, using her signature honesty and wit.
At the end of each trip, a cute 4-panel cartoon is included to convey the author's impressions of the trip in a more special and rich way.
A trip where you can think about how to spend your day and have fun
The purpose of all the trips included in 『Travel Diary from Around the World』 is the same.
I met something beautiful and left with only thoughts of joy.
Masuda Miri, who was in love at the time while on a school group trip to Italy, talks about how she was excited throughout the trip by throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain with the expectation that she might be confessed to; how she panicked at a restaurant on the Champs-Élysées because she couldn't read French, roughly pointed to the menu and waited anxiously to see what would come out; how she sat on the open terrace at a restaurant that was obviously aimed at tourists, but enjoyed paella with her friends and ate it happily; and how she still cherishes the precious time she spent with the children she met at a home in Bali where she stayed while reporting.
It conveys the preciousness of living everyday life by recalling the various experiences and warm and affectionate relationships formed with many people while traveling to various countries.
