Lee Hyeon's "Play Ball," a masterpiece that comes to mind when thinking of sports fairy tales and coming-of-age fairy tales and has been much loved by readers, has been republished by Biryongso with new illustrations.
Lee Hyeon has won the Jeon Tae-il Literary Award, the Changbi Good Children's Book Manuscript Award, and the Changwon Children's Literature Award, and was selected as Korea's representative author in the writer category of the 2022 IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Hans Christian Andersen Award.
"Play Ball," published in 2016, realistically portrays the growth and struggles of children on a baseball team at an elementary school in Busan before graduation, and is considered a model for sports fairy tales.
This is a story that will serve as a compass for children who love baseball and for those who want to cultivate their own dreams.
With a new coach, the Gocheon Elementary School baseball team begins to change.
Dong-gu, the team's starting pitcher, cleanup hitter, and captain, works harder than ever, following the coach's instructions to be the best, not just the best.
But as the desire for victory grows, conflicts arise within the team, and his father tells Dong-gu that it is time to pursue reality rather than dreams.
From Purun, who struggles with what he likes and what he is good at, to Yeongmin, who plays his own baseball no matter what others say, the children grow up shining through victory and defeat, cheers and tears.

Publisher's Review
◆ Gocheon Elementary School Baseball Club, number 11.
I am a baseball player.
My heart is full of baseball, and only baseball.
-In the text
Dong-gu was destined to play baseball.
His mom and dad met at a baseball stadium and got married, and thanks to his mom, who is a die-hard Lotte Giants fan, Dong-gu has been going to Sajik Stadium since before he could even walk, and even had his first birthday photo taken on the mound.
Dong-gu, a fifth grader at Gucheon Elementary School, is the starting pitcher and captain of the Gucheon Elementary School baseball team. Although he belongs to a team that has never won a proper championship, his thoughts on baseball are no less than those of a professional player.
It's not a thought.
The body catches the ball.
Fall, roll, bump into things, break things, and learn with your body.
Learn it with your body. - From the text
However, with the appointment of a new coach at Gucheon Elementary School, the baseball team faces a new turning point.
The manager says that you have to be the best, not the best, and if you want to continue playing baseball, you have to play baseball that wins no matter what.
Now, Dong-gu's heart begins to fill with hope and a strong desire to win a decent match.
◆ If you can do what you love to your heart's content in a world where you have to win to survive
Baseball is a team sport.
Whether we win or lose points, we do it together.
-In the text
Although Dong-gu and his younger brother Min-gu had been living with their mother for a long time after their parents divorced, Dong-gu never felt a great void in his heart because he had baseball.
But it seems like my younger brother Min-gu was different.
While his mother was focusing on raising Dong-gu to become a baseball player, Min-gu became mentally ill.
No one blamed Dong-gu, but Dong-gu felt his heart sink because he felt like it was his fault.
And to make matters worse, his father, whom he hasn't seen in a long time, tells Dong-gu that he should quit baseball now.
As a sixth grader about to enter middle school, I thought it would be a good time to choose the reality of studying when it comes to deciding on a career path.
Dong-gu says that it's good, that he plays baseball because he likes it, but his father asks him back if he can play baseball if he likes it.
In contrast to Dong-gu's personal history, Gucheon Elementary School experiences an exciting match thanks to the new coach's training and strategy, as well as the children's intense training.
But as the game gets closer, Dong-gu begins to feel his heart slowly cracking under the pressure of competition and jealousy.
Dong-gu thought that baseball was about winning and losing together, regardless of who was good or bad, but when the spotlight was stolen by the new member, Young-min, and when Purun, who had been his catcher partner since childhood, was pushed out of the starting lineup, Dong-gu felt that baseball was not fun for the first time in his baseball life.
Standing on the mound with a confused mind, what kind of game will Dong-gu play? And above all, will he be able to continue playing baseball?
