Description
Book Introduction
The desire to be reunited, even if it means resorting to superstition and prayer, that intense and sharp longing
From "Cocktail, Love, Zombie" to "Tropical Night," author Jo Ye-eun has invited readers to "Jo Ye-eun World," a world of eerie and lighthearted horror thrillers with a happy ending. Her new novel has been published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.
"Waiting for the High Tide" begins with the protagonist, Jeong-hae, receiving news that his childhood friend, Woo-young, committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea at high tide.
Jeong-hae, who couldn't believe that Woo-young, who always said he wanted to be buried in the mountains, threw himself into the sea, jumps into the middle of Yeongsan Bridge to follow Woo-young's footsteps.
Just as the mudflats are revealed at low tide, the true secrets of Yeongsan Bridge and Wooyoung, hidden by the black sea at high tide, are gradually revealed.

"lie.
“Even though I’m about to die just because of hide-and-seek?”
“I think you’re mistaken about something.”
Wooyoung paused for a moment and trembled.
I felt like I was getting chills.
“I know when the tide comes in this mudflat.
But I still wanted to find you, so I looked for you.”
--- p.7
“What message was he trying to leave me?”
The message Wooyoung was trying to send was just one sentence.
Do you remember our hide and seek?
It was the very day he went missing.
--- p.14
Jeonghae muttered to someone who was either still on the island or had disappeared.
So wait at Yeongsan.
Don't leave yet and watch over me.
--- p.20
Love, hope for a reunion.
At that moment, Bok-eun quickly muttered three words and came closer, her fingers like dry branches entangled with Jeong-hae's hand.
Bok-eun whispered while making persistent eye contact.
“Somehow, I smelled the same thing from you.”
And he whispered affectionately as if he was looking at a comrade running towards the same finish line.
“The smell of loss.
Let's go to the mountain lord.
“He will solve everything.”
--- p.22
“So you too must pray with all your heart.
Our Yeongsan Church exists to comfort the hearts of those who have lost loved ones.
“The mountain god allows those who are moved to transcend the boundaries of life and death to reunite, but not everyone can experience reunion at the sacred mountain.”
Then he added with a smile.
“You have to show sincerity.”
--- pp.28~29
Even if I reached that rock, I knew that by then the water would be higher and I wouldn't be able to swim back.
Still, I had no choice but to move forward.
That's definitely my choice.
So, you don't have to be sorry even if I die.
But don't die.
--- p.57
Jeonghae thought of Wooyoung quite often.
But he never expected to meet again, because to Jeong-hae, Woo-young was like a mountain or a rock with a shell.
Since the island and the rocks did not move, it was natural for Wooyoung to remain on the island forever.
--- pp.67~68
“It was only then that I realized how unfair it was that I had only stayed on the island.
I'm still a mountaineer.
As long as there are mountains, I will go back there.
But once, I wanted to live like you.”
As he said that, Wooyoung looked at Jeonghae.
Jeonghae felt like the words, “like you,” were criticizing him.
--- p.72
“What kind of trick is it to say that you can meet the dead again?”
Wooyoung's reaction was completely unexpected.
“I never fooled those people.”
And with the coldest expression Jeong-hae had ever seen on his face, he stood up, packed his bags, and said.
“You have never truly believed a word I said.”
Wooyoung, who left the goshiwon, did not contact me or answer my calls after that day.

Publisher's Review
“There is someone I want to meet again no matter what.”
The desire to be reunited, even if it means resorting to superstition and prayer, that intense and sharp longing
From "Cocktail, Love, Zombie" to "Tropical Night," author Jo Ye-eun has invited readers to the "Jo Ye-eun World," a world of eerie and lighthearted horror thrillers with a happy ending. Her new novel, "Waiting for High Tide," has been published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.
The novel begins with the protagonist, Jeong-hae, receiving news that his childhood friend, Woo-young, committed suicide by throwing himself into the sea at high tide.
Jeong-hae visits Mia Island, Woo-young's hometown, for the first time in 20 years.
There was an old legend at the 'Yeongsan', which stood tall in the middle of the island, that "if you bury the belongings or bones of the dead, you will be able to meet them again" (page 17).
Wooyoung was the daughter of a family of mountain keepers who had managed Yeongsan for generations, and she had always said that she wanted to be buried in the mountain.
Jeong-hae couldn't believe that Woo-young would throw himself into the sea.
Meanwhile, the pseudo-religion 'Yeongsan Church', which grew in size based on the legends floating around Yeongsan, continued to call people to Mia Island, even appearing on TV.
The youngest daughter of the Choi family, the 'Sanju', who was long held in high esteem as the owner of Yeongsan, developed Yeongsan Buddhism by receiving 'offerings' under the guise of prayer and devotion.
Jeong-hae jumps into the middle of Yeongsan Church, following in the footsteps of Woo-young, who was devoted to religious activities.
Even if it meant relying on a belief that was ridiculed as superstition, “to meet again somehow” (p. 20).
Just as the mudflats are revealed at low tide, the true secrets of Yeongsan Bridge and Wooyoung, hidden by the black sea at high tide, are gradually revealed.
50 stories in 50 books in one year
A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'
Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
The series is released every Wednesday through the Wisdom House website and newsletter 'We Pick'.
Beginning with author Koo Byeong-mo's "Shred," 50 stories will be released to readers over the course of a year.
The Wepick series publishes novels that have finished serialization in this way sequentially.
The first five stories will be released on March 8th, and four stories will be published every second Wednesday of the month thereafter, creating a festival of 50 stories throughout the year.
This time, rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, the book is composed of only one short story, an unusual attempt that provides readers with a special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.
There is also a special gift inside the book.
This is a supplementary poster titled 'One Novel', which contains an entire novel on one poster.
A single novel offers readers the special experience of encountering a story in a new way.
