Representative works of Nobel Prize-winning author Albert Camus
A masterpiece that realistically depicts social injustice and human psychology.

"The Plague" is the representative work of Nobel Prize-winning author Albert Camus, who is also widely known for "The Stranger" and "The Myth of Sisyphus."
"The Plague" is a chronicle of the diverse lifestyles of the citizens of Oran, a city in crisis due to the spread of the plague.
The 'plague' depicted literarily in this work is clearly a disease.
However, considering the background of this work, 'the plague' symbolizes not only disease but also war and Nazism.
As Rieux points out, if the 'plague' is something that can return at any time, then the symbolic meaning of the 'plague' is this pathological, social, and historical meaning.
The life of mankind, which has always fought and resisted against diseases big and small, is captured in Camus's literature.
That is why Albert Camus's "The Plague" is considered a must-read.

The so-called 'demonic' elements within us that gnaw away at the inside of human beings also fall under the category of 'pest'.
The important thing is to be a healthy person who does not contract any type of plague, to make an effort not to spread the plague to others when contracted, and to faithfully fulfill each person's role in curing the plague when contracted.
The cover design for the 1947 first edition of "The Plague," newly published by The Story, offers both rebuke and encouragement to the people of 2020 who are fighting against COVID-19 through the eyes of Albert Camus.
In the characters who confront the plague, a disease symbolizing the injustice, hypocrisy, and absurdity that destroys humanity, without being discouraged, we discover the cure of sincerity and 'positivity'.

Author's chronology

Into the book
While our citizens were struggling to come to terms with their sudden exile, the plague forced sentries to be posted at every gate and the ships heading to Oran to be diverted.
Since the city's closure, not a single vehicle has entered the city.
From that very day on, I had the impression that cars were starting to circle around.
The harbor also presented a strange sight to those who viewed it from high above the streets.
The daily bustle that had made Oran one of the most important ports on the coast suddenly subsided.
A few isolated ships were still visible.
But the empty, large cranes on the docks, the overturned cargo wagons, the truncheons and barrels piled up in silence, were a clear indication that the trade here had also been decimated by the plague.
--- From "Part 2"

By the end of August, our citizens had managed to be evacuated to their final resting places in a fairly orderly manner, giving the authorities a sense that they were at least doing their duty, if not being polite.
But in order to convey what final steps had to be taken in the end, it is necessary to tell in advance how events had unfolded.
While the plague was virtually at a standstill since August, the number of victims accumulated far exceeded the capacity of our small cemetery.
