Publisher's Review
This is the ninety-fourth magazine 『B』.
When I organize my closet around the time the seasons change, I often sigh.
It's a chronic symptom to have a lot of clothes, but feel like you have nothing to wear.
Moreover, clothes that are only one or two seasons old are often treated as if they have lost their charm and vitality.
Although this closet is filled with countless failures, it is not without a breakthrough.
Even if it doesn't make your heart race or catch your eye, there are clothes, bags, and accessories that you reach for a lot, but they are quietly doing their job.
Personally, I would like to put these items into the category of 'attachment'.
The concept of attachment has some ambiguities, contrary to its literal definition.
It is far from a clear value judgment such as good or bad, perfect or poor, economical or uneconomical.
If I had to pick an expression that comes relatively close to the meaning of attachment, it would be something like “it suits me.”
If you devote yourself to finding the right fit, your perspective on clothes may change.
In this sense, Barbour, introduced in the second 『B』 of 2023, is a brand that falls into the category of affection of many people.
Even Barbour users I met in the UK, where the brand was born, as well as in Japan and Korea, and even Barbour employees, calmly expressed that they have been sincerely cherishing Barbour products for a long time and will continue to do so in the future. It is common for Barbour enthusiasts to wear a waxed cotton jacket that has been well-maintained for 10 to 20 years.
There's a clear difference between being a consumer of a brand and being a fan, and Barbour has a quietly but robust fandom built on trust and faith.
At the heart of that fandom is the waxed cotton jacket, a true legend.
Whether it's the clothes worn by fishermen and workers on the northeast coast of England over a century ago, the leisure attire of aristocrats and royalty who enjoyed hunting and horseback riding, or the clothes favored by rock stars and celebrities at music festivals, Barbour has always written a story that fits the times.
Although Barbour is often described as a functional clothing brand, such as functionality or durability, it is somewhat of a stretch to view Barbour as a functional clothing brand.
Compared to the specifications of outdoor clothing designed for extreme performance, I think Barbour's functional details are more like 'traces'.
As I mentioned earlier, the Barbour jacket, which has represented the culture of a certain region and the lives of a certain profession, is like a kind of folktale, and people can be said to wear a symbol.
It feels similar to the psychology of those who want to drive a manual transmission car in an era when electric vehicles are commercialized.
It faithfully fulfills its role as a tool, but it is more valuable as a hobby that fills the gaps in time.
The descendants of founder John Barber, who have continued the Barber brand for five generations, seem to have flexibly moved between the roles of progressive businessman, creative storyteller, and conservative researcher.
Their greatest achievement is that they have expanded their business without damaging the authority of the original.
In an interview with B, Barbour CEO Steve Buck revealed that the brand's approach to business success was to "surprise people without being shocking."
Margaret Barber, the current president, also told other media outlets that she “innovated very carefully.”
If the British have a knack for discovering the little things, giving them meaning, respecting them, and at the same time beating them, then they are making full use of that talent.
