The 5 Billion Reading Method that Brings Wealth
Description
Book Introduction
“Just keep reading.
“Books never betray!”
How to Enter the World of Wealth Without Missing the Opportunities Books Offer
“The gifts books gave me:
“Benz, Tower Palace, Bitcoin, 5 billion won in assets, and the FIRE tribe!”
In the early 2010s, read a self-help book and bought a Benz, with a total net worth of 300 million won. 〉 In 2014, read a Bitcoin book and bought 20 Bitcoins with 10 million won. 〉 In 2015, read hundreds of stock investment books and invested in foreign stocks including US stocks. 〉 In 2018, achieved 2 billion won. 〉 In 2021, achieved 5 billion won! 〉 Boldly quit his professorship and made a major life change by becoming a FIRE tribe member!
A rainy summer day in 2021.
The author, Professor Choi Seong-rak (who was working at the time), and the editor of the publishing company ‘Monday’s Dream’ met at a cafe near Gangnam Station.
It was our first meeting since our meeting in 2016.
“Professor, how have you been?” Professor Choi immediately responded to the editor’s greeting and question.
“I’m resigning soon!” Professor Choi told the editor, who couldn’t help but ask, “Why not?” at the shocking news, that the investment had been successful.
Bitcoin! It's said that he invested 10 million won when it was worth 500,000 won per coin.
"I'm witnessing with my own eyes the early Bitcoin investors I've only heard about." The envy faded, and the editor's brain circuits raced with planning ideas.
What message could the author convey to readers over a long period of time? Cryptocurrency investment methods? Stock investment methods? Then, the thought struck me: "Study methods for success."
What did the author study and how did he become such an active investor despite being a professor? I was most curious about his successful study method.
So, I proposed a study method on the spot, and the result was this book, "The 5 Billion Reading Method that Brings Wealth."
“I would have lived like that too if nothing special had happened.
But things started to change a bit around the time I was in my forties.
I wanted to live better financially.
It was all thanks to books that I was able to make changes and achieve positive results in my forties.
It was thanks to books that I started thinking about living differently than before, and it was thanks to books that I changed the direction of my life.
It was the book that taught me how to invest, and it was thanks to the book that I was able to make real profits.
If you ask me how to study, I have only one answer.
Reading a book.

The Real Challenges of Reading, and Why You Should Keep Reading
Into the book
I would have lived like that too if nothing special had happened.
But things changed a bit starting in early 2010.
I wanted to live better financially, so I started investing in earnest.
In the early 2010s, total net assets were around 300 million won.
This amounted to 2 billion won in 2018 and 5 billion won in 2021.
And in 2021, I quit my job as a professor and became a FIRE member.
(…) What made it possible to try to change at forty and achieve positive results?
Thanks to the book.
It was thanks to books that I started thinking about living differently than before, and it was thanks to books that I changed the direction of my life.
It was the book that taught me how to invest, and it was thanks to the book that I was able to make real profits.
---From the "Introductory Note"
During the Joseon Dynasty, Chinese classics such as “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and “Water Margin” were banned.
It is not that they want the people to be unaware of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang, etc., but rather that they are afraid that the people's obedient behavior will change after reading this classic that deals with resistance and rebellion against the dynasty.
The Joseon Dynasty recognized that books could change the way people thought and behaved.
Unfortunately, Don Quixote did not change positively after reading the book.
Although he committed the bizarre act of thinking and acting like a medieval knight in the modern era, it would be wrong to look at him and think, "You shouldn't read too many books," or "Reading too many books makes you stupid." If Don Quixote had read that many books about business, he would have thought and acted like a businessman.
You may have tried to start a business and become successful as an entrepreneur.
---From "Chapter 1: Books Change Your Way of Thinking and Behavior"
But at some point while reading a self-help book, this thought occurred to me.
'I'll try doing what the self-help book says!' I don't know when or why this thought suddenly occurred to me.
(…) Until then, while reading self-help books, I never thought about doing exactly what the books said.
I don't know about papers or academic books, but will reading general books make my life better?
(…) I set a goal as the self-help book said, wrote it down on paper, got a picture of a Benz, and put it up somewhere I could see it every day.
I honestly didn't think I could drive a Benz while doing that.
(…) But something changed.
Before, I only thought about buying a Benz or riding one.
But as I looked at my goals written on paper and the picture of my Mercedes-Benz every day, at some point my thoughts changed.
'How can I buy a Benz?' Before, I only thought about buying a Benz.
Now I started wondering how I could survive.
When the question changes, the thinking also changes.
From this point on, I started thinking about how to buy a Benz.
You have to save money first.
Saving alone takes a long time, so you need to find ways to invest that will allow you to accumulate more money and actually invest it.
(…) From then on, I started looking for ways to make 100 million won and started investing.
After three years of starting, 100 million won was made.
I saved enough money to buy a Benz.
At first, I bought an Audi of the same class, and a few years later I changed my car to a Benz.
(…) I couldn’t help but acknowledge the power of self-help books.
It was a self-help book that made me decide to buy a Mercedes-Benz, a car I'd never thought I'd be destined for, and what made me finally buy it! Until then, books were just books. I never imagined they could actually impact my life and change it.
But that wasn't it.
Books have the power to change the way people think and live.

Publisher's Review
“It’s all thanks to books!
“Reading books is the only self-improvement method I can talk about!”
The Don Quixote effect.
The author, Choi Seong-rak (Director of SR Economic Research Institute, Ph.D. in Business Administration and Public Administration), introduces Don Quixote as the first story in his sixteenth book, The 5 Billion Reading Method that Brings Wealth.
This novel is set in the modern era and tells the story of the eccentric protagonist, Don Quixote, who tries to practice medieval chivalry.
How did Don Quixote become such an eccentric person?
The great author Cervantes set 'reading hundreds of books about medieval knights' as the 'moment of change' in order to create the convincing character of Don Quixote.
Don Quixote, who had read hundreds of books about medieval knights, ended up becoming an 'eccentric medieval knight' living in the modern era.
Through this story, author Choi Seong-rak talks about the 'true power of reading.'
We usually think of books as mere transmitters of knowledge and information, but in fact, books convey emotions and, above all, change our way of thinking and behavior.
And this point, the author says, is the true value and power of the book.
It was thanks to this ‘transforming power’ of books that the great author Cervantes was able to create Don Quixote so convincingly.
If you view books simply as a means of acquiring information or knowledge, then honestly, searching the Internet is much more effective than reading books.
However, you cannot feel the excitement and fun that the book 'Harry Potter' provides just by looking at the search results for 'Harry Potter'.
The author says that only the long-lasting medium of books can convey emotions, change the way we think, and even change our behavior, something that internet search results can never provide.
In "The 5 Billion Reading Method that Brings Wealth," the author calmly yet boldly unfolds his own thoughts on the true power of books as a medium and the public's misunderstandings about books.
"Don't think, just read a lot," "Don't criticize or analyze," "Recommended reading? Ignore it!" The author's sometimes counterintuitive advice on books and reading, such as "Don't think, just read a lot," will actually prompt readers to reconsider their reading habits.
The author, Choi Seong-rak, is a 'book addict' who reads 500 books a year.
From comics and magazines to academic books and papers, there is no distinction between fields or difficulty levels.
I read any book that catches my eye.
He concludes the book by telling the reader this based on his own reading experience.
“Books can change our lives completely.
If you read books consistently, your life will change.
“Reading books is the only self-improvement method I can speak of.”
