“On the way home, an elephant walked out of the flowers.”
A magical encounter for those who walk leisurely!

On the way home from school, a flower he has never seen before catches his eye.
It is a scarlet trumpet-shaped flower with a pair of white stamens protruding from it.
The long tusks look just like elephant tusks... ... Oh, really, a tiny elephant walks out.
When the child holds out his palm, the elephant lands on it.
It's a real, living elephant, blinking its eyes, flapping its ears, and wagging its trunk!
Perhaps such a wonderful thing happened to the child because he had the 'eyes to recognize' a 'flower he saw for the first time'.
People who walk slowly and look around tend to notice things that others rarely notice and encounter things that others rarely encounter.
And this kind of ‘awareness’ or ‘encounter’ often becomes a treasure that adds color to life.
Just like this encounter that came to the child today.
The child gently places the elephant, which is as small as a chestnut, on a rock and looks at it quietly.
My heart is pounding, but I try to act calm.
Because you can't surprise this little guy.
The elephant also looks at the child with its small, black eyes.
It is a moment when two young lives look at each other head-on without any caution or calculation.
It was at this moment that the child fell head over heels in love with the elephant.

The child is anxious to do something for this little cutie, to hold on to him just a little longer.
He searches through his bag and takes out a pinwheel, gives him some grass, gives him some water, and even shows him his pencil case full of fun things.
Elephants also show off their skills a lot.
They march around happily, holding pinwheels up to their noses, eating grass, drinking water, and touching various items in their pencil cases.
Then, I collapse into the corner of my pencil case and fall asleep.
It looks like he was just playing around and was tired.
The child's heart is anxious as he looks at the sleeping elephant.
I can't take my eyes off this wonderful moment, afraid it will pass by quickly, afraid that this fragile life will crumble at any moment.
Like looking at a shooting star crossing the night sky or flowers in full bloom.
The child wants to protect this fragile and beautiful life completely.
I'm not sure now if it's about protecting the fragile and beautiful part within me, and within us.
And I don't know for sure now that it is that fragile and beautiful part that makes us human.

Publisher's Review
A hymn to the fragile and beautiful!

Author Hwang K said that he was inspired by poet Hwang Dong-gyu's poem "Pungjang 58" for this work.
The poet discovered elephants, butterflies, and life in the morning glory, and the picture book writer made the elephant and the boy come together from the flower.
Come to think of it, the meeting between the elephant and the boy feels like the meeting between a poem and a child.
I'm already curious to see what kind of chemical reaction will occur when the children who read this picture book encounter poet Hwang Dong-gyu's poetry.
For adult readers, it would be a fun experience to read a book while comparing the similar and different imaginations of poets and picture book writers and the similar and different grammar of poetry and picture books.

Another pleasure of reading this book lies in the illustrations, which capture the eye with their childlike simplicity and subtle colors.
The artist completed the painting one by one by cutting and pasting thin pieces of colored paper and coloring them with pens and colored pencils.
I think it might be because I wanted to capture the transparent light emitted by fragile lives in my paintings.
Perhaps that's why I find it difficult to turn each page, and my eyes linger on each scene for a long time.
That's why, as my eyes caress the picture, the spring sunshine shines down on my heart and the spring breeze blows.
It is a book that is passed around like a hand warmer in the middle of winter and a fan in the middle of summer.
