Into the book
While preparing for “Spain Self-Travel,” I read the novel “Don Quixote” by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes.
Alonso Quixano, a country nobleman from the La Mancha region, is fascinated by chivalric novels and fancies himself a wandering knight, Don Quixote.
They value courtesy, integrity, bravery, and loyalty as their ideals, and they are devoted to the now-abolished chivalry system.
His somewhat comical adventures satirize the old feudal aristocracy.
But the attitude Don Quixote showed was never funny to me.
--- p.14 From 「Prologue」
The reason Spanish people eat five meals a day is related to their siesta culture, which involves taking a nap during the hot midday.
After eating lunch around 1:00 PM and taking a nap to escape the heat, I had time for a snack to satisfy my hunger until 9:00 PM, when it was dinner time.
You might think dinner is too late, but this eating habit dates back to the discovery of the New World, when nobles would start their dinners late and enjoy banquets all night long.
These days, it's said that Spanish cuisine is increasingly enjoyed in a more informal setting, but most restaurants have set business hours based on eating habits, so it's convenient to plan your meal times accordingly.
--- p.53 From "5 Meals a Day! Spain, the Perfect Place to Enjoy Gourmet Food"
Barcelona today is a mix of old and new.
In architecture, art, and gastronomy, traditions are upheld or reinterpreted, and traces are re-established.
Like the Sagrada Familia cathedral, which has been under construction for 100 years, Barcelona still flows without stopping.
When traveling to Barcelona, start from Las Ramblas.
Just as streams seek rivers, labyrinthine alleyways lead to Ramblas.
Just grab the alley and go up.
At such times, we can clearly recognize that we are walking through time, beyond the act of walking.
Barcelona is a walking city in many ways.
--- p.77 From “Spain’s Priority: Barcelona”
Madrid, the capital of an empire where the sun never sets.
After Philip II made it the capital of Spain in 1561, Spain entered its most glorious period, the Pax Hispania, in the 17th century.
Connecting Spain and the New World, he achieved great power and wealth.
It is a city that holds peace, prosperity, and all its glory in its hands.
With splendid palaces, precious jewels, and outstanding art all flocking to the city, Madrid became the center of politics, economy, and culture.
--- p.221 From “Madrid, the Mecca of Art, Culture, and Shopping”
The southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, based on the Guadalquivir River in central Spain, is called 'Andalusia'.
At the southern tip, the Strait of Gibraltar, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, flows like a barrier to peace between Spain and Morocco in Africa.
The strait, just 14.9 kilometers long and an hour's boat ride away, collapsed in 711 when the Moors entered the peninsula.
The Moorish kingdom was unlike any other civilization that had ever conquered the world.
It has developed into a complex civilization that chooses coexistence over confrontation, and goes through conflict, reconciliation, and then fusion.
--- p.329 From “Andalusia, Southern Spain, Where Tolerance and Coexistence Breathe”
Spain has many religious holidays and festivals.
Holy Week, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus, is the biggest religious event and is celebrated for a week leading up to Easter.
During this period, accommodations fill up quickly and prices skyrocket, so make sure to book early.
The scale of the event is particularly large in the Andalusia region, so there is a need for hurry.
Each region has a patron saint, and the patron saint's day of that region is designated as a public holiday.
