I have always lived my life determined to learn from history.
Joseon had the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the Diaries of the Royal Secretariat, and the Ilseongnok, all of which were registered as UNESCO World Heritage.
In Joseon, there were historians and record-keepers who were full of historical consciousness, and their sense of mission and pride in history was great.
Thanks to this, anyone can easily check the history of the 16th day of the 518th year of the Joseon Dynasty through the Internet today.
From 1623, in the mid-Joseon period, the Seungjeongwon Diaries fully document 288 years of history, and from 1760, the Ilseongnok fully document 151 years of history, allowing us to know in detail what happened on which day in which year.
Let's look at just a few scenes from the historical record.
On February 8, 1404 (the 4th year of King Taejong's reign), King Taejong (Lee Bang-won) fell from his horse while out hunting and said, "Do not let the historian know," but the historian recorded it as it was.
Even the tyrant King Yeonsangun said on August 14, 1506 (the 12th year of King Yeonsangun’s reign), “The only thing the king fears is history.”
On March 17, 1611 (the third year of King Gwanghaegun’s reign), King Gwanghae personally issued a letter to the 33 Confucian scholars who passed the state examination, asking, “What is the most urgent matter of state?”
The students put all their effort into devising a plan to catch the king's eye at the final checkpoint.
Among them, Im Suk-yeong (任叔英, 1576-1623) wrote as follows.
“The king’s fault is the country’s illness.
You must not become arrogant or lazy.
“I humbly risk my life to answer.” King Gwanghaegun, enraged by this abrupt answer, ordered that he be excluded from the list of successful candidates for the civil service examination, which is the so-called “Sak-gwa (削科) Incident.”
However, Prime Minister Sim Hee-su and other officials resisted for several days, repeating, “It won’t work,” and finally forced King Gwanghaegun to surrender after four months.
While I am writing this book with the determination to be pelted with stones and pointed fingers by my seniors, colleagues, and juniors who have different opinions on issues such as the establishment of the National Police Agency, the relocation of the Presidential Office to Yongsan, and the Itaewon tragedy, I am writing this book with the mindset of an officer.
