The picture book "Kungkung Apartment" has been published, which vividly depicts the conflicts and reconciliation between neighbors in an apartment building filled with various noises.
"Kung Kung Apartment" is a picture book based on the stop-motion animation "Saturday's Apartment" (2018) by director Jeon Seung-bae and art director Kang In-sook, who create animations using various materials such as felt and clay.


"Saturday Multi-generational House," which faithfully embodies the skills of director Jeon Seung-bae, who has studied and produced animation for over 20 years, has attracted attention with its colorful characters of various ages from babies to the elderly, wool felt dolls that create a sentimental atmosphere, and cute miniature props. It won the Best Work Award at the Korea Creative Content Agency's "KOC! ANI KOC! PRIZE," the Silver Prize in the Best Technique category at the Japan Digicon 6 Asia Awards, and the Audience Award (ages 5-10) at the New York International Children's Film Festival.
Considering the characteristics of picture books, where the viewer's gaze lingers on a single scene for a longer period of time than on a fast-paced video, the dolls appearing in the original work were handled with more delicacy and the lighting and space were created to suit the scene.
The impressive stop-motion animation that has garnered attention both domestically and internationally has been reborn as an impressive picture book, offering a unique enjoyment.

This picture book vividly depicts the conflict and resolution process caused by noise between floors, a problem closely related to our lives.
The sounds of everyday life, such as guitar playing, large and small construction sounds, and crying, were vividly expressed visually using various onomatopoeias.


The setting of the work, 'Kung Kung Apartment', is home to a young goat who dreams of becoming a singer, an old giraffe who wants to fix up a house, a baby rabbit who wants to run around freely and a mother rabbit who is busy taking care of her baby, an old koala who wants to write quietly, and an old bear who is obsessed with hula hooping and a treadmill.
As the name of the apartment suggests, conflicts between neighbors are growing due to noise.
The story shifts to an incident where a giraffe, while repairing a house, accidentally cuts a power line.
A sudden power outage becomes an opportunity for neighbors to resolve misunderstandings they have built up between themselves.
When the entire apartment complex loses power, residents gather on the rooftop, drawn by the sound of singing.


The residents, who met each other for the first time in one place, began to share stories they had kept inside, such as their dreams of becoming singers and their desire to decorate their homes nicely.
Then, when the baby rabbit faces a dangerous situation, the neighbors come together to deal with the crisis.
"Kung Kung Apartment" depicts the process in which residents who were once indifferent and hostile to each other become close as they "hold on to each other with all their might, trying not to let go," and subtly suggests that cherishing and caring for others begins with the very gaze they share.

One day the apartment collapsed?

This picture book leads the narrative centered around space.
In situations of confrontation due to noise, the reader's gaze is shifted to the rooftop, a place where everyone lives, from the scene where the conflict begins to be resolved to the personal space where communication is cut off from neighbors.
The story ends with the apartment collapsing with a thud, leaving everyone with a level space.
The neighbors all work together to fix up their collapsed apartments and decorate the windows with their favorite colors.
Additionally, we are giving it a new name, ‘Saturday Multi-Generation House’, with the intention of making the space we live in together a place that is always as enjoyable as Saturday.
"Kungkung Apartment" raises questions about the vertical structure of our society by resolving conflicts in an ironic way that twists the spatial structure.
This story can be read broadly as a cheerful incident that unfolds in an apartment, or as a message about imagination and wise coexistence in alternative spaces.

"Kung Kung Apartment" is a picture book with cute images made with felt dolls and small and large props.
The characters were created through a painstaking process of wrapping yarn around a frame with each character's unique personality, attaching cotton balls to it, and then repeatedly poking them with a needle to give them their shape.
Each and every small detail, including the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth, was carefully crafted to create a rich expression.
Clouds and butterflies were also expressed in a warm and lively way using the felt texture.

Another pleasure of reading this picture book is looking at the living spaces that reflect each character's characteristics.
On one side of the house of the young goat who dreams of becoming a singer, you can see a piano and an amplifier, around the giraffe man who just moved in, there are various tools and an old refrigerator, and in the study of the koala grandfather, there are books neatly arranged, a globe, and various writing instruments.
The well-made scenes created by meticulously filling in small elements draw the reader into the story.
