2025 Young Writer Award Grand Prize winner Baek On-yu draws
A corrupted heart and a feeling of extreme love that cannot be poured out generously
Baek On-yu, who won the Changbi Youth Literature Award for his novel “Amusement Park” and the Grand Prize at the 2025 Young Writer’s Award for “Half of Half of Half,” captivated the hearts of readers of all generations with his new short story “Relationships” published by Wisdom House.
This is the first book published after winning the Young Writer's Award, and it is the story of two children under protection, 'Yoon-ah' and 'Tae-hwa', who have now become adults and are trying to rebuild their relationship that was strained due to Tae-hwa's death.
They wanted to be everything to each other, but their hearts, not receiving as much in return as they gave, gradually decayed, leading to the tragic ending of Taehwa's death.
Two people who have never learned how to love and do not know how to love, cling precariously to a thin and fragile spider web and reach out to each other. In the deep night when only the two of them exist, Yuna finally becomes a person related to Taehwa.

Into the book
Jihyun seemed a bit down right after leaving the district office, but quickly regained her composure and spoke to me.
But, unnie, I don't think it's right for Taehwa to be recorded as an unaccounted person.
You think so too, don't you? That's really a bit much.
Right? Of course, I didn't think so either.
He lived without parents or siblings and died alone.
I couldn't bring myself to bring up the realistic story, thinking that was Taehwa's last record.
But ten million won?
Do you have that much spare money?
I wanted to ask Jihyun directly.
Do we have to pay ten million won to fulfill our duty? That's not right, is it? Do we really have to pay for the funeral ourselves—with our own money?
--- p.21
When I called out to him, “Taehwa, look at this,” Taehwa’s dazed eyes suddenly lit up.
I liked that.
That I became important to someone.
It wasn't a lie that I felt pity for him, but I felt even more elated by the fact that there was someone who would never abandon me.
--- p.40
As I sensed the child's death, tears welled up in my eyes without me knowing it.
I looked up at the ceiling like Taehwa, afraid that tears would fall.
As Taehwa said, a small spider was hanging from the web.
Half of my heart was filled with sadness, and the other half with anger.
The spider was either diligently building its web or just waiting for prey to get caught in its web, but to me it seemed to be holding on somehow, relying on a thin, thin thread.
--- pp.48-49
We were exemplary in our self-reliance, staggering just enough to be able to moderately recover.
I was quite proud of that fact.
There were days when my heart would become dark and desolate without me realizing it.
Still, I told myself that for us, this isn't so bad.
Then it really felt like that.
--- pp.57-58
If Taehwa was going to die, I wanted to find out about it as late as possible.
Suddenly, I felt curious and missed that child, but I thought irresponsibly, "He was such a good child. I hope he's doing well," and wanted to erase it from my mind.
I practiced the art of loving less to be less sad and cowardly.
--- p.83-84
Such a tragic event occurred, but we did not cry, complain, or feel wronged.
When I think about it, there has been so much unhappiness in our lives.
Originally, people shouldn't be this indifferent.

Publisher's Review
“I practiced loving less to be less sad.”
2025 Young Writer Award Grand Prize winner Baek On-yu draws
A corrupted heart and a feeling of extreme love that cannot be poured out generously
Baek On-yu, who won the Changbi Youth Literature Award for his novel 『Amusement Park』 and the Grand Prize at the 2025 Young Writer's Award for 『Half of Half of Half』, captivated the hearts of readers of all generations with his new short story 『Relationships』, published by Wisdom House.
This is the first book published after winning the Young Writer's Award, and it is the story of two children under protection, 'Yoon-ah' and 'Tae-hwa', who have now become adults and are trying to rebuild their relationship that was strained due to Tae-hwa's death.
One day, as usual, Yuna is crossing the street when she receives a phone call that Taehwa has died.
This was something that was completely unrealistic for Yuna, who had grown up like real siblings in an orphanage, “staggering just enough to handle things properly and being an exemplary self-reliant person,” and who had considered each other to be her inseparable family.
Even while struggling with the district office staff to get Taehwa, who was classified as an unclaimed body due to his lack of family, there was another reason why Yuna could not believe Taehwa was dead.
The dead Taehwa was ringing the doorbell of Yuna's house every night.
Unable to ask whether Taehwa is aware of his own death or why he comes to her house every night instead of Taehwa's or his girlfriend Jihyun's house, Yuna prepares meals for him and listens to his stories for the two weeks that Taehwa visits.
Yuna and Taehwa, children who were not accepted by their original families, grow up seeing each other as their everything and alter ego.
Even as adults, they try to be each other's only fence, but they understand the cruel truth that to say they are like family means they are not family at all, and they constantly search for complete and blind affection.
The heart that does not receive as much as it gives gradually decays, and rushes to the tragic ending of Taehwa's death.
Two people who have never learned how to love and do not know how to love, cling precariously to a thin, fragile spider web and reach out to each other.
In the deep night when only the two of them exist, Yuna finally becomes Taehwa's relative.
A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'
Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.
Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, and Lim Sol-ah.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.
