Description
Book Introduction
A youth novel by Kim Ryeo-ryeong, a rising young author who has won the Ma Hae-song Literary Award, the Munhakdongne Children's Literature Award, and the Changbi Youth Literature Award.
It warmly depicts the growth process of Wandeuk, a seventeen-year-old boy who is poor and not good at studying, but who is unbeatable in fighting.
This novel adds to the fun by featuring charming characters such as Do Wan-deuk, a passionate youth with nothing but his natural fists; the homeroom teacher, Ddong-ju, who seems to come to school for the fun of teasing his students; and Yoon-ha, an ordinary student who competes for first or second place in the entire school, but for some reason cannot take her eyes off Wan-deuk.

"Wandeukie" gives hope to readers through the main character, Wandeukie, who has a sense of life, humanity, and optimism that greenhouse plants would never know.
A dwarf father, a mother from Vietnam, and even a fake uncle who stutters and is clumsy...
Even in the harsh reality, instead of blindly following a set path, Wan-deuk confronts the world with his whole body and finds his own path.
This is a touching novel that makes us reflect on the true meaning of the somewhat old-fashioned word 'hope'.
The fast-paced writing style and rapid story development stand out.
"Wandeukie" was published as a hardcover and as part of a youth literature series, and this book belongs to the latter.

Publisher's Review
A special coming-of-age novel, "Wandeukie"

"Wandeukie" is a vibrant coming-of-age novel that is hard to find in our literary history, and therefore all the more welcome.
Before the publication of 『Wandeukie』, it is true that our readers had been seeking the true emotion and enjoyment of coming-of-age novels in Western novels like 『The Catcher in the Rye』 or Japanese popular novels like 『GO』.
Now, we have a work that will be considered a classic among youth novels, and a protagonist who will captivate a generation, 'Wandeuk'.

Wandeuk is a seventeen-year-old boy who comes from a poor family and is not good at studying, but is unrivaled in fighting.
Wan-deuk's life takes a sharp turn when he meets his teacher, 'Ddong-ju', who was once his sworn enemy but gradually transforms into a 'lovable enemy'.
Wandeuk learns how to express his anger toward the world while learning kickboxing, and learns how to express affection while meeting his mother. He gradually grows throughout the novel.

A feast of vibrant characters

"Wandeukie" is a spectacle of characters with unique personalities that seem to have jumped out of reality, from the main character to the supporting characters, coming together in harmony.
Do Wan-deuk, a passionate young man with only two fists, captures the hearts of readers at first sight.
In addition, the homeroom teacher 'Ddongju', who is suspicious of coming to school for the fun of gently teasing the students, and 'Yoonha', who is the daughter of a rich family and a model student who competes for the top two spots in the entire school, but for some reason cannot take her eyes off Wandeuk, are also attractive main characters.
The harmony of the surrounding characters who appear like seasoning and stimulate curiosity, such as Hassan, an unidentified man who appears every time Wandeuk goes to church and looks for his 'sister', and the man next door who shouts every night, "Is it Wandeuk or Mandeuk?", is exquisite.

More enjoyable than chachacha, more exhilarating than kickboxing!

The charm of 『Wandeukie』, which is just as eye-catching as its characters, is its fast-paced writing style.
The rhythmic dialogue and the story unfolding without a dull moment are reminiscent of a comic book at first glance.
"Wandeukie" is a roller coaster.
Once you get on, you can never get off until it's over.
In the unadorned, honest sentences and the story that runs without hesitation, readers will soon find themselves excitedly moving their own feet, following Wandeuk's steps that are more cheerful than chachacha and more exhilarating than kickboxing.

The glorious revival of the old-fashioned word "hope"

Another, the most powerful weapon that 『Wandeuk-i』 possesses is the emotion that leaves you with a tingle after a good laugh.
Wandeuk's family, consisting of a 'dwarf' father, a mother from Vietnam, and a clumsy, stutter-speaking fake uncle, is a family that would never be welcomed in the harsh reality.
But instead of being discouraged or frustrated, Wandeuk firmly holds on to the happiness that others have given up on.
Instead of blindly following a set path, you must find your own path by engaging with the world with your whole body.
Through Wandeuk, who possesses a sense of life, humanity, and optimism that the greenhouse plants would never know, readers will be able to rediscover the true meaning of the old-fashioned word "hope."

From the special edition author's note

My introduction on the book's wings has become quite long.
When the first edition was first printed on March 17, 2008, the page was even more concise.
Wandeuk, whose name was called out far more often than mine, has also been quite diligent.
He has been active in plays, movies, musicals, music, and even as a bookmark model.
He was such a strong-willed guy that he left behind the writer who gave birth to him and went his own way.
And then, they take off the clothes they have been wearing for a long time and put on new clothes.
With the natural, pretty appearance of a child who grew up receiving a lot of love.
It's all thanks to you.
Thanks to that, Wandeuk was able to shine.
