People forget to protect themselves.
A world divided into those who forget the dead to avoid mourning and those who remember them to mourn.
Fifteen-year-old boy Somok witnesses death for the first time in his life in an abandoned house and has a premonition that some memories can never be forgotten.
After running for a while, the tree arrived at another two-story house that was full of life, unlike the abandoned house.
There lives 'Naul', the only person Somok can call a friend.
The girl who suddenly appeared in the park four years ago disappeared after revealing her secret, and when Somok gave up on chasing Naul's traces, he encountered Somok, having forgotten all his memories except for Somok.
A boy who could not forget death in order to protect himself, and a girl who forgot death.
The two people, who do not want to lose their precious being, climb over the wall once again to learn how to accept loss.

Into the book
This wasn't some old lovers' secret meeting.
There was something more eerie and wrong in the air at that moment.
As the woman straightened her posture, the things that had been hidden on her back gradually came to light.
There were two hands of a woman, and under the hands was a damp towel, and under the towel was a shadow, and under the shadow were eyes wide with astonishment.
He was an old man.
Her skin felt smooth and lumpy like a wax doll, and her mouth was glistening with saliva as thick as enamel.
It didn't seem alive at all.
--- p.22
“Let me add to what I have said so far.
First, forgetting is how humans protect themselves.
Second, the death of one human being is a traumatic event for another human being.
So what should humans do to protect themselves from death?
“You have to forget the dead.”
--- p.27
Besides, half of the gang's incursions into the police station were because of this kid.
He told me about the shortcuts that rich boys use to escape during class, and he also mentioned that my wallet would be thick.
But when the incident actually happened, he refused to take any responsibility.
In a word, he was a quiet kid.
But some gentlemen seemed to cleverly avoid even hatred, avoiding anything that might harm them.
It's about knowing how to stop the tantrum just before it turns into real resentment, and how to alternate between being mean and playful.
As if by instinct.
--- pp.43~44
As Somok silently took off his shoes, Naul helped him climb over the windowsill.
The boy was embraced by the girl and pulled into the soft, rich heat.
I don't know if it was detergent or perfume, but the scent of verbena flowers was everywhere, and that scent was another form of heat.
I felt like I was walking through hell and suddenly being transported to a paradise full of flowers.
A paradise with pure white pajamas, pillowcases, and blankets.
--- pp.47~48
So, forgetting the dead is different from just cutting off the time you spent together.
It's more like rewinding time very quickly and leaving only the essential points.
Just as a decaying corpse turns into bones, so does presence transform into the seeds of a story through oblivion.
A much simpler and clearer story compared to the dynamics of life.
The hero's deeds are reduced to a single paragraph in a textbook, and even the life of a great emperor is reduced to two pages.
--- p.84
“Why did you come out dressed like that when you knew it was cold?”
Even before the question was asked, the woodcutter had already taken off his coat and handed it to me.
To be exact, it was Naul's coat from the beginning.
Naul put on his coat calmly without saying thank you and smiled again.
They say girls naturally laugh a lot, but this girl really laughs for no reason.
Whoever gave him his coat back would do the same.
Then who would think useless thoughts?

How a boy and girl who don't want to lose something precious accept loss
Danyo's new short stories, "The Dog's Designer" and "This is How the World Changes"
Danyo, who began her career in 2022 with the young adult novel "Dive" and won both the Moon Yun-seong SF Literature Award and the Park Ji-ri Literature Award in 2023, has established herself as a new writer with a unique presence and is receiving the most attention. Her new novel, "Verbena Beyond the Wall," has been published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.
The boys hide under the wall of an old, deserted two-story brick house.
A time when someone must muster up the courage to go inside the house to stay up all night.
The smallest and lightest boy, Somok, is pushed up a tree and climbs to look into the second-floor window, where he witnesses death with his own eyes for the first time in his life.
The world where Somok lives is divided based on death, and those who have experienced death or not, and those who have changed or not changed because of death live sideways, looking at each other.
Many people choose oblivion to protect themselves, taking possession of the dead by either forgetting them or remembering them as they see fit.
On the other hand, those who can never forget a certain death are pushed to the 'outside' and become detectives, notaries, tragic protagonists, or romantic lovers, dealing with memories.
Memories of death follow Somok as he runs away after witnessing death in an abandoned house.
After running for a while, the tree arrived at another two-story house that was full of life, unlike the abandoned house.
There lives 'Naul', the only person Somok can call a friend.

A boy who could not forget death in order to protect himself, and a girl who forgot death.
Naul asks Somok to take him to an abandoned house where an old man died for his memory homework.
“To remember is to be together, and to exist is to be remembered in some form.” Somok and Naul, who do not want to lose their precious loved ones, climb over the wall once again to learn how to accept loss.
A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'
Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
Over the past year, 50 stories have been loved by readers, including Gu Byeong-mo's "Shred," Jo Ye-eun's "Waiting for the High Tide," Ahn Dam's "The Girl Grows Alone," and Choi Jin-young's "Aurora."
The Wepick series publishes serialized novels in this way, and rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, it takes the unusual approach of composing a book with only one short story, giving readers the special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.
Following the 50 episodes of Season 1, Season 2 is filled with even more new writers and stories.
Season 2 will feature writers Kang Hwa-gil, Lim Seon-woo, Dan Yo, Jeong Bo-ra, Kim Bo-young, Lee Mi-sang, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong I-hyeon, Lim Sol-ah, and Hwang Jeong-eun.
Additionally, Season 2 will include author interviews, telling a variety of stories both inside and outside of the works, further enriching the annual festival of 50 stories.
